Synergies between high-energy satellites and ESO facilities
Mainieri, V.
High-energy satellites, in particular XMM-Newton, have clear synergies with ESO instruments. This is testified by the significant number of scientific publications based on data obtained with both facilities. In this article, we briefly review past synergies and discuss future possibilities.

Formation of cometary nuclei during low-velocity collisions of planetesimals
Zelenyi, L. M.; Ksanfomaliti, L. V.
An investigation of the properties of the 67P/CG nucleus shows convincingly that some of the cometary nuclei resulted from low-velocity collisions of planetesimals. The hypothesis about the origination of a cometary nucleus from colliding bodies has long been known, but it is comet 67P/CG that has imparted topicality to it. In this paper we briefl…
Gaia space mission and quasars
Zwitter, Tomaž
Quasars are often considered to be point-like objects. This is largely true and allows for an excellent alignment of the optical positional reference frame of the ongoing ESA mission Gaia with the International Celestial Reference Frame. But presence of optical jets in quasars can cause shifts of the optical photo-centres at levels detectable by G…

Lessons Learned from the SD2 Operations on the Comet 67/P
Di Lizia, P.; Bernelli-Zazzera, F.; Ercoli Finzi, A.
This work deals with the space systems devoted to drilling and sampling of low-gravity extra-terrestrial soils and, in particular, with the cometary instrument SD2 (Sampler, Drill and Distribution subsystem) onboard the lander Philae of Rosetta mission, which was in charge to drill and sample the comet 67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The behaviour of …
Optimizing the Distribution of Tie Points for the Bundle Adjustment of HRSC Image Mosaics
Bostelmann, J.; Heipke, C.; Breitkopf, U.
For a systematic mapping of the Martian surface, the Mars Express orbiter is equipped with a multi-line scanner: Since the beginning of 2004 the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) regularly acquires long image strips. By now more than 4,000 strips covering nearly the whole planet are available. Due to the nine channels, each with different viewi…
Probing relativistic effects in the central engine of AGN
Miniutti, G.; Sanfrutos, M.
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are perfect laboratories to check General Relativity (GR) effects by using Broad Line Region (BLR) clouds eclipses to probe the innermost regions of the accretion disk. A new relativistic X-ray spectral model for X-ray eclipses is introduced. First we present the different observables that are involved in X-ray eclipse…
