On the M V -Inclination Relationship for Nova-like Variables
Howell, Steve B.; Mason, Elena
Using a sample of Nova-like stars from the Ritter & Kolb catalog, we examine the relationship between their Gaia-determined absolute magnitude and the inclination of the binary system. Webbink et al. derived a relationship between these two variables that provides a good fit and allows differentiation between \dot{M} (and possibly M WD
India plans to land near moon's south pole
Bagla, Pallava
Sometime this summer, an Indian spacecraft orbiting over the moon's far side will release a lander. The craft will ease to a soft landing just after lunar sunrise on an ancient, table-flat plain about 600 kilometers from the south pole. There, it will unleash a rover into territory never before explored at the surface. That's the ambitious vision …
Magnetohydrodynamic waves and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the boundary of plasma mediums
Kozak, L.; Kronberg, E.; Cheremnykh, S. +1 more
It has been theoretically established that shear plasma flows at the boundary of the medium can generate eight MHD modes, of which only one can be unstable due to the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. It is shown that oblique perturbations propagating at an angle with respect to the velocity vector play a dominant role in the develo…
Anisotropic power spectrum and the observed low-l power in PLANCK CMB data
Rath, Pranati K.; Zhao, Dong; Chang, Zhe +1 more
In this work, we study a direction dependent power spectrum in anisotropic Finsler space-time. We use this direction dependent power spectrum to address the low-l power observed in WMAP and PLANCK data. The angular power spectrum of the temperature fluctuations has a lower amplitude in comparison to the ΛCDM model in the multipole range l = 2 - 40…
Blue straggler stars beyond the Milky Way: a non-segregated population in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2213
Hong, Jongsuk; Li, Chengyuan
Using the high-resolution observations obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we analysed the blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2213. We found that the radial distribution of BSSs is consistent with that of the normal giant stars in NGC 2213, showing no evidence of mass segregation. However, an analytic calcula…
A Phenomenological Model for the Light Curve of Three Quiescent Low-inclination Dwarf Novae and One Pre-cataclysmic Variable
Szkody, Paula; Garnavich, Peter M.; Su, Jie +5 more
We used the light curve code XRBinary to model the quiescent K2 light curves of three low-inclination cataclysmic variables (CVs): 1RXS J0632+2536 (J0632+2536), RZ Leo, TW Vir and the pre-CV WD 1144+011. Optimized light curve models were obtained using a nonlinear fitting code NMfit and visualized by Phoebe 2.0. The disk model of J0632+2536 shows …
Investigation of the High-energy Emission from the Magnetar-like Pulsar PSR J1119-6127 after the 2016 Outburst
Hu, Chin-Ping; Kong, A. K. H.; Hui, C. Y. +7 more
PSR J1119-6127 is a radio pulsar that behaved with magnetar-like bursts, and we performed a comprehensive investigation of this pulsar using the archival high-energy observations obtained after its outburst in 2016 July. After the 2016 outburst, specific regions on the neutron star (NS) surface were heated up to >0.3 and >1 keV from ∼0.2 keV…
Making maps of cosmological parameters
Mukherjee, Suvodip; Wandelt, Benjamin D.
We provide a fast algorithm to diagnose any directional dependence in the cosmological parameters by calculating maps of local cosmological parameter estimates and their joint errors. The technique implements a fast quadratic estimator technique based on Wiener filtering and convolution of the sky with a patch shape. It uses only three map-resolut…
Structure and Dynamics of Three-Dimensional Magnetotail Reconnection
Lapenta, Giovanni; Goldstein, Melvyn L.; El-Alaoui, Mostafa +3 more
We have used a global magnetohydrodynamic simulation and embedded particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation to analyze magnetotail reconnection in and near the electron diffusion region (EDR). Results from the magnetohydrodynamic simulation were used to set the initial and boundary conditions for the large-scale implicit PIC simulation. We examined proxie…
Reconciling the Predictions of Microlensing Analysis with Radial Velocity Measurements for OGLE-2011-BLG-0417
Boisse, I.; Bachelet, E.; Street, R. A. +2 more
Microlensing is able to reveal multiple body systems located several kilo-parsec away from the Earth. Since it does not require the measurement of light from the lens, microlensing is sensitive to a range of objects, from free-floating planets to stellar black holes. But, if the lens emits enough light, the microlensing model predictions can be te…
