Herschel Observations of Circinus X-1 during Outburst and Quiescence
Harrison, Thomas E.; Gelino, Dawn M.; Buxton, Michelle +1 more
We have used the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer and Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver instruments on the Herschel Space Observatory to observe Cir X-1 both in and out of outburst. We detected Cir X-1 during outburst at 70 µm. Unfortunately, a cold background source dominates Cir X-1 at longer wavelengths. We have assembl…
The location of Airy-0, the Mars prime meridian reference, from stereo photogrammetric processing of THEMIS IR imaging and digital elevation data
Neukum, G.; Kirk, R. L.; Neumann, G. A. +7 more
The small crater Airy-0 was selected from Mariner 9 images to be the reference for the Mars prime meridian. Initial analyses in the year 2000 tied Viking Orbiter and Mars Orbiter Camera images of Airy-0 to the evolving Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter global digital terrain model to update the location of Airy-0. Based upon this tie and radiometric tr…
Subaru Spectroscopy and Spectral Modeling of Cygnus A
Imanishi, Masatoshi; Perlman, Eric S.; Nikutta, Robert +6 more
We present high angular resolution (~0.''5) MIR spectra of the powerful radio galaxy, Cygnus A (Cyg A), obtained with the Subaru telescope. The overall shape of the spectra agree with previous high angular resolution MIR observations, as well as previous Spitzer spectra. Our spectra, both on and off nucleus, show a deep silicate absorption feature…
Molecular tendrils feeding star formation in the Eye of the Medusa. The Medusa merger in high resolution 12CO 2-1 maps
Gallagher, J. S.; Petitpas, G.; Aalto, S. +5 more
Studying molecular gas properties in merging galaxies gives us important clues to the onset and evolution of interaction-triggered starbursts. NGC 4194 (the Medusa merger) is particularly interesting to study, since its FIR-to-CO luminosity ratio rivals that of ultraluminous galaxies (ULIRGs), despite its lower luminosity compared to ULIRGs, which…
The variable ionized absorber in the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348
Turner, T. J.; Reeves, J. N.; Braito, V. +6 more
We present the results of the analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348, observed by Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The overall spectrum of Mrk 348 can be described by a primary power-law continuum seen through three layers of absorption, of which one is neutral and two are ionized. Comparing Suzaku (2008) and XMM-Newton (2002) observations …
The bivariate K-band-submillimetre luminosity functions of the local HRS galaxy sample
Andreani, P.; Ciesla, L.; De Looze, I. +6 more
We study the relationship between the K-band and the sub-millimetre (submm) emissions of nearby galaxies by computing the bivariate K-band-submm luminosity function (BLF) of the Herschel Reference Survey (HRS), a volume-limited sample observed in submm with Herschel/SPIRE. We derive the BLF from the K-band and submm cumulative distributions using …
The iron K line profile of IRAS 18325-5926
Vaughan, S.; Lobban, A. P.
IRAS 18325-5926 is an X-ray bright, Compton-thin, type 2 Seyfert galaxy and it was the first Seyfert 2 in which the presence of a broad Fe Kα emission line was claimed. However, although the structure of the Fe line appears broad, there is tentative evidence that it may comprise multiple lines. Nevertheless, previous analyses have only consisted o…
The puzzling symbiotic X-ray system 4U1700+24
Masetti, N.; Del Santo, M.; Nucita, A. A. +4 more
Context. Symbiotic X-ray binaries form a subclass of low-mass X-ray binary systems consisting of a neutron star accreting material from a red giant donor star via stellar wind or Roche lobe overflow. Only a few confirmed members are currently known; 4U 1700+24 is a good candidate as it is a relatively bright X-ray object, possibly associated with …
The Extraordinary Far-infrared Variation of a Protostar: Herschel/PACS Observations of LRLL54361
Henning, Thomas; Bally, John; Marton, Gabor +11 more
We report Herschel/Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) photometric observations at 70 µm and 160 µm of LRLL54361—a suspected binary protostar that exhibits periodic (P = 25.34 days) flux variations at shorter wavelengths (3.6 µm and 4.5 µm) thought to be due to pulsed accretion caused by binary motion. The PA…
Pre-outburst Chandra observations of the recurrent nova T Pyxidis
Balman, Ş.
Aims: I study the spectral, temporal, and spatial characteristics of the quiescent X-ray emission (not in outburst) of the recurrent nova T Pyx.
Methods: I performed the spectral analysis of the X-ray data obtained using the Chandra Observatory, Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-S3) detector. I fit the spectra with several models t…
