Addendum to: Strength of the Solar Coronal Magnetic Field - A Comparison of Independent Estimates Using Contemporaneous Radio and White-Light Observations
DOI: 10.1007/s11207-017-1203-3 Bibcode: 2017SoPh..292..177K

Kumari, Anshu; Ramesh, R.; Kathiravan, C. +1 more

This addendum uses an alternate fit for the electron density distribution N (r ) (see Figure 1) and estimates the coronal magnetic field using the new model. We find that the estimates of the magnetic field are in close agreement using both the models.

Unusual Black Hole Binary LMC X-3: A Transient High-mass X-Ray Binary That Is Almost Always On?
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa8f96 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...849...32T

Boyd, Patricia T.; Smale, Alan P.; Valencic, Lynne A. +1 more

We have analyzed a rich, multimission, multiwavelength data set from the black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) LMC X-3, covering a new anomalous low state (ALS), during which the source flux falls to an unprecedentedly low and barely detectable level, and a more normal low state. Simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical monitoring data from Swift are combined w…

The FluxCompensator: Making Radiative Transfer Models of Hydrodynamical Simulations Directly Comparable to Real Observations
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa8666 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...849....3K

Robitaille, Thomas P.; Koepferl, Christine M.

When modeling astronomical objects throughout the universe, it is important to correctly treat the limitations of the data, for instance finite resolution and sensitivity. In order to simulate these effects, and to make radiative transfer models directly comparable to real observations, we have developed an open-source Python package called the Fl…

Evolution of the anti-truncated stellar profiles of S0 galaxies since z = 0.6 in the SHARDS survey. I. Sample and methods
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201630282 Bibcode: 2017A&A...604A.119B

Barro, Guillermo; Pérez-González, Pablo G.; Borlaff, Alejandro +5 more

Context. The controversy about the origin of the structure of early-type S0-E/S0 galaxies may be due to the difficulty of comparing surface brightness profiles with different depths, photometric corrections and point spread function (PSF) effects (which are almost always ignored).
Aims: We aim to quantify the properties of Type-III (anti-trun…

Lightning detection in planetary atmospheres
DOI: 10.1002/wea.2817 Bibcode: 2017Wthr...72...46A

Aplin, Karen L.; Fischer, Georg

Lightning in planetary atmospheres is now a well-established concept. Here we discuss the available detection techniques for, and observations of, planetary lightning by spacecraft, planetary landers and, increasingly, sophisticated terrestrial radio telescopes. Future space missions carrying lightning-related instrumentation are also summarised, …

Gemini and Lowell observations of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko during the Rosetta mission
DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stx2472 Bibcode: 2017MNRAS.469S.661K

Skiff, Brian A.; Schleicher, David G.; Vincent, Jean-Baptiste +4 more

We present observations of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko acquired in support of the Rosetta mission. We obtained usable data on 68 nights from 2014 September until 2016 May, with data acquired regularly whenever the comet was observable. We collected an extensive set of near-IR J, H and Ks data throughout the apparition plus visible-light images…

Diagnostics of Coronal Bright Points using IRIS, AIA, and HMI Observations
DOI: 10.1007/s11207-017-1132-1 Bibcode: 2017SoPh..292..108K

Dwivedi, B. N.; Kayshap, P.

We perform the detailed imaging and spectroscopic analysis of two coronal bright points (CBPs). These CBPs are dominated by bright dots or elongated bright features. Their rapid temporal variations lead to a continuous change in their overall morphology at chromospheric and transition-region (TR) temperatures. A 3D potential magnetic field extrapo…

High Radiation Pressure on Interstellar Dust Computed by Light-scattering Simulation on Fluffy Agglomerates of Magnesium-silicate Grains with Metallic-iron Inclusions
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa6c2d Bibcode: 2017ApJ...839L..23K

Kimura, Hiroshi

Recent space missions have provided information on the physical and chemical properties of interstellar grains such as the ratio β of radiation pressure to gravity acting on the grains in addition to the composition, structure, and size distribution of the grains. Numerical simulation on the trajectories of interstellar grains captured by Stardust…

Oxygen Ions O+ Energized by Kinetic Alfvén Eigenmode During Dipolarizations of Intense Substorms
DOI: 10.1002/2017JA024418 Bibcode: 2017JGRA..12211256D

Dandouras, I.; André, M.; Reme, H. +7 more

Singly charged oxygen ions, O+, energized by kinetic Alfvén wave eigenmode (KAWE) in the plasma sheet boundary layer during dipolarizations of two intense substorms, 10:07 UT on 31 August 2004 and 18:24 UT on 14 September 2004, are investigated by Cluster spacecraft in the magnetotail. It is found that after the beginning of the expansi…

Pseudo-automatic Determination of Coronal Mass Ejections’ Kinematics in 3D
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa755f Bibcode: 2017ApJ...842..134B

Stenborg, Guillermo; Dal Lago, Alisson; Echer, Ezequiel +2 more

Coronal mass ejection (CME) events are among the main drivers of geomagnetic disturbances, and hence play a central role in the Sun-Earth system. Their monitoring and, in particular, the determination of their speed and direction of propagation are key issues for the forecasting of space weather near to Earth. We have implemented a method to track…
