A high-resolution IUE observation of the line of sight to nova V693 Corona Austrinae 1981.
Sion, E. M.; Williams, R. E.; Truran, J. W. +3 more
The authors have analyzed an IUE echelle image of nova V693 Coronae Austrinae 1981 obtained 12 days after its outburst. Broad (30 - 40 Å full width) emission lines dominate its spectrum and generally confirm the difficult identifications of emission features present in its low-resolution spectrum taken 12 days after outburst. Numerous sharp absorp…
Coordinated EXOSAT and Spectroscopic Observations of Flare Stars and Coronal Heating
Rodono, M.; Butler, C. J.
We present some preliminary results of simultaneous monitoring of the two flare stars, UV Ceti and EQ Peg with EXOSAT and ground based optical spectro-scopy. A strong correlation, found between the Hγ emission and the soft X-ray flux, over several hours of observation of UV Ceti, suggests that much of the low level X-ray flux which has previously …
The Extinction Law in the Open Cluster NGC 457 and the Intrinsic Energy Distribution of phi Cassiopeiae (F0 Ia)
Morrison, N. D.; Rosenzweig, P.
Five early B-type stars near the main-sequence turnoff in NGC 457 have been observed at low dispersion with the short-wavelength prime and the long-wavelength redundant cameras of the IUE satellite. The equivalent widths of spectral features that are particularly strong and sensitive to temperature and luminosity were computed in the cluster stars…
The Orbit and Properties of the HD 149162 System
Mayor, M.; Johnson, Hugh M.
HD 149162 is classified photometrically single and SB1 except for H-alpha emission that departs widely from the radial velocity of the K0 dwarf. Ca II H and K and Mg II h and k also show emission components at low dispersion. The system is X-ray luminous although ostensibly old disk and a slow K dwarf rotator. The orbit and other observations lead…
Space observations of comet Halley
Brandt, J. C.
Following the encounters by Soviet, Japanese and European spacecraft, the International Cometary Explorer took measurments of comet Halley on 22 March. The comet has also been observed by the Solar Maximum Mission, the International Ultraviolet Explorer, the Pioneer Venus Orbiter, the Dynamics Explorer 1, and by sounding rockets.
A search of tidal interaction in RS CVn stars : UV emission variations in lambda And.
Glebocki, R.; Sikorski, J.; Bielicz, Elzbieta +1 more
31 spectra obtained with the LWR camera of the IUE satellite in the period 1978 - 83 are analysed. Except strong Mg II h and k lines three other weak emissions are found. Changes of intensities of the emission lines are not correlated with photometric (rotational) period. The Mg II emissions show very good correlation with half of the orbital peri…
A rapid planetary phase observed on the IUE spectral region of the carbon star, HD 59643
Querci, M.; Querci, F.; Johnson, H. R. +1 more
The IUE satellite has been used to obtain low-and high resolution LWP and SWP spectra of the unusual cool carbon star HD 59643 (R9; C6,2), which appears to suffer a planetary nebula phase. These spectra enable us to understand the nature of this fascinating object, which may be in a stage of rapid evolution. High resolution line profiles are exami…
The nitrogen abundance in Wolf-Rayet WC stars.
Schmutz, W.; Nussbaumer, H.
In order to confirm the presence of nitrogen in WC stars, the IUE spectra of the WC 8 star HD 192103 have been studied in the region 1230-1250 A. The fluxes in the spectra of HD 192103 were extracted using two different procedures: the method described by Ramella et al. (1983); and the background correction method of Schmutz (1985). It is demonstr…
EXOSAT observations of two gamma-ray burst sources
Hurley, K.; Motch, C.; Boer, M. +18 more
EXOSAT observations of the 19 Nov 1978 and 25 Mar 1979b gamma bursters are presented, for the 0.02-2.5 keV energy range. No source was detected in either case, leading to temperature upper limits for the neutron stars assumed to be present of 105-106 °K. Polar cap accretion rates are constrained to values of 10-12-…
The ultraviolet spectrum of the eclipsing binary IM Aurigae.
Feibelman, W. A.; Kondo, Y.; Bruhweiler, F. C.
After recent ground-based photometry of the eclipsing Algol-type system IM Aurigae showed a rapid increase in O-C values of the primary minimum, a spectral search at ultraviolet wavelengths was conducted for evidence of a recent mass-loss "event". Low-dispersion IUE spectra were obtained at primary and secondary minima, as well as a high-dispersio…
