Latest Results Found with Ring-Diagram Analysis
Howe, R.; Hill, F.; Rabello-Soares, M. C. +9 more
Ring-diagram analysis is a helioseismic tool useful for studying the near-surface layers of the Sun. It has been employed to study near-surface shear, meridional circulation, flows around sunspots, and thermal structure beneath active regions. We review recent results obtained using ring-diagram analysis, state some of the more important outstandi…

Star formation in the luminous YSO IRAS 18345-0641
Ramsay, S.; Currie, M. J.; Davis, C. J. +2 more
Aims: We aim to understand the star formation associated with the luminous young stellar object (YSO) IRAS 18345-0641 and to address the complications arising from unresolved multiplicity in interpreting the observations of massive star-forming regions.
Methods: New infrared imaging data at sub-arcsec spatial resolution are obtained for …
Investigation of dust properties of the proto-planetary nebula IRAS 18276-1431
Maud, L. T.; Izumiura, H.; Murakawa, K. +1 more
We investigate the circumstellar dust properties of the oxygen-rich bipolar proto-planetary nebula (PPN) IRAS 18276-1431 by means of two-dimensional radiative transfer simulations of the circumstellar dust shell. The model geometry is assumed to have a torus and an envelope which consists of a pair of bipolar lobes and a spherical asymptotic giant…
Coherent transmission of upstream waves to polar latitudes through magnetotail lobes
Glassmeier, K. H.; Regi, M.; De Lauretis, M. +2 more
studied the transmission of upstream waves to polar latitudes through the Earth's magnetotail lobes, statistically examining the correspondence between magnetospheric waves detected by Cluster and geomagnetic fluctuations at Dome C, in Antarctica (λ ~ 88.84°S). The analysis was restricted to time intervals when Cluster was in the southern magnetot…
Detection of an Ultra-bright Submillimeter Galaxy behind the Small Magellanic Cloud
Tamura, Yoichi; Kohno, Kotaro; Yun, Min S. +21 more
We report the discovery of a new ultra-bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG) behind the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This SMG is detected as a 43.3 ± 8.4 mJy point source (MM J01071-7302, hereafter MMJ0107) in the 1.1 mm continuum survey of the SMC by AzTEC on the ASTE telescope. MMJ0107 is also detected in the radio (843 MHz), Herschel/SPIRE, Spitze…
Remote sensing of a NTC radio source from a Cluster tilted spacecraft pair
Lointier, G.; Rauch, J. -L.; Trotignon, J. -G. +7 more
The Cluster mission operated a "tilt campaign" during the month of May 2008. Two of the four identical Cluster spacecraft were placed at a close distance (~50 km) from each other and the spin axis of one of the spacecraft pair was tilted by an angle of ~46°. This gave the opportunity, for the first time in space, to measure global characteristics …
Efficient Selection and Classification of Infrared Excess Emission Stars Based on AKARI and 2MASS Data
Zeng Li, Jin; Rector, Travis A.; Huang, Ya Fang +1 more
The selection of young stellar objects (YSOs) based on excess emission in the infrared is easily contaminated by post-main-sequence stars and various types of emission line stars with similar properties. We define in this paper stringent criteria for an efficient selection and classification of stellar sources with infrared excess emission based o…
Near-lunar proton velocity distribution explained by electrostatic acceleration
Hutchinson, I. H.
The observation of parallel ion velocity in the near-lunar wake approximately equal to external solar wind velocity can be explained within uncertainties by an analytic electrostatic expansion model. The one-dimensional model frequently used is inadequate because it does not account for the moon's spherical shape. However, application of a more re…
Discovery of Diffuse Hard X-Ray Emission from the Vicinity of PSR J1648-4611 with Suzaku
Haba, Yoshito; Matsumoto, Hironori; Sakai, Michito +2 more
We observed the pulsar PSR J1648-4611 with Suzaku. Two X-ray sources, Suzaku J1648-4610 (Src A) and Suzaku J1648-4615 (Src B), were found in the field of view. Src A is coincident with the pulsar PSR J1648-4611, which was also detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. A hard-band image indicates that Src A is spatially extended. We found po…
