Habitability around M stars: the action of flares
Buccino, A. P.; Mauas, P. J. D.; Lemarchand, G. A.
We analyzed the UV habitable zones (UV-HZ), defined in Buccino et al. (2006), around planetary dM stars observed by IUE: HIP 74995, HIP 109388, HIP 113020 and around two dMe stars: Ad Leo and EV Lac. We found that moderate flares could be an energy source in the biogenesis processes.
FULL TEXT IN SPANISHMicrophysics and radiative-dynamical feedback in the near infrared brightness features in the Venus clouds
McGouldrick, Kevin Bartholomew
The goal of this thesis is to understand the causes of the holes that form in the Venus condensational clouds; and to determine the mechanisms that are responsible for their subsequent evolution. Near Infrared observations of the nightside of Venus reveal regions of high brightness temperatures. These regions of high brightness temperatures are ca…
An Attempt to Detect Coronal Mass Ejections in Lyman-α Using SOHO Swan
St. Cyr, O. C.; Bertaux, J. -L.; Yashiro, S. +4 more
In this study, the possibility that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) may be observed in neutral Lyman-α emission was investigated. An observing campaign was initiated for SWAN (Solar Wind ANisotropies), a Lyman-α scanning photometer on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) dedicated to monitoring the latitude distribution of the solar w…
EUV coronal pattern of complexes of solar activity
Benevolenskaya, Elena E.
Studying of the coronal plasma associated with long-lived complexes of the solar activity is important for understanding a relationship between the magnetic activity and the solar corona changing during the solar cycle. In the present paper, two long-lived complexes of the solar activity at the beginning of the current solar cycle 23 are investiga…
Diffusive Compression Acceleration of Energetic Particles with an Application to Shock Acceleration near Injection Energies
Zhang, Ming
The behavior of energetic charged particles accelerated by a continuous plasma compression profile is explored in the framework of diffusion. At high enough energies, the accelerated particles have a power-law spectrum with a slope generally steeper than a shock spectrum with the same compression ratio. The spectral slope depends on the ratio of t…
Erratum: ``A Potential Supernova Remnant-X-Ray Binary Association in M31'' (ApJ, 634, 365 [2005])
Williams, Benjamin F.; Kong, Albert K. H.; Kolb, U. +3 more
We have discovered a flaw in the light curves we previously generated using the XMM-Newton Science Analysis Software (SAS), which can produce spurious Type A power density spectra (R. Barnard et al. 2007, preprints astro-ph/0610035, astro-ph/0703120). This is the type of variability associated with disk-accreting binary systems (R. Barnard et al. …
Crowded-Field Astrometry with SIM PlanetQuest. I. Estimating the Single-Measurement Astrometric Bias Arising from Confusion
Sridharan, R.; Allen, Ronald J.
The accuracy of position measurements of stellar targets with the future Space Interferometry Mission PlanetQuest (SIM) will be limited not only by photon noise and by the properties of the instrument (design, stability, etc.) and the overall measurement program (observing strategy, reduction methods, etc.), but also by the presence of other "conf…
Whistle and Hall Magnetic Field Associated with Near-Earth Magnetotail Reconnection Observed by Cluster
Santolik, O.; Reme, H.; Cao, Jin-Bin +4 more
During the period of 2001 2003, Cluster passed through the near-Earth magnetotail, and observed 14 magnetotail reconnection events. Simultaneously, Cluster observed electromagnetic wave associated with reconnection events. These 14 events can be classified into three categories: (1) Category 1: wave activities prior to and during reconnection even…
Searching for Low-Mass Binary Companions in M35 Using the Fine Guidance Sensors of the Hubble Space Telescope
Harrison, T. E.; McArthur, Barbara; McNamara, B. J.
The Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensors data on 23 stars in the intermediate-age cluster M35 having B-V<0.5 (~F7 V) are analyzed to test whether binary periods, separations, and masses can be estimated by measuring periodic variations in the residuals of their internal proper motions. Of the 23 stars examined, 4 appear to possess a per…
Dust Distribution in [WR] Planetary Nebulae: a Case of M2-43
Szczerba, R.; Hajduk, M.; Gesicki, K.
Simultaneous presence of O- and C-rich molecules and/or dust is commonly known as mixed or dual chemistry. C-rich [WR] central stars show at the same time the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and crystalline silicates in their nebulae. We perform radiative transfer modeling of ISO spectrum for M2-43 to determine spatial location…
