Deep VLA Images of the HH 124 IRS Radio Cluster and Its Surroundings, and a New Determination of the Distance to NGC 2264
Rodríguez, Luis F.; Loinard, Laurent; Dzib, Sergio A. +1 more
We present new deep (σ ~ 6 µJy) radio images of the HH 124 IRS radio cluster at 4.8 and 7.5 GHz. We detect a total of 50 radio sources, most of them compact. Variability and spectral indices were analyzed in order to determine the nature of the sources and of their radio emission. A proper motion study was also performed for several of these…
Mass profile and dynamical status of the z ~ 0.8 galaxy cluster LCDCS 0504
Ilbert, O.; Schrabback, T.; Schirmer, M. +34 more
Context. Constraints on the mass distribution in high-redshift clusters of galaxies are currently not very strong.
Aims: We aim to constrain the mass profile, M(r), and dynamical status of the z ~ 0.8 LCDCS 0504 cluster of galaxies that is characterized by prominent giant gravitational arcs near its center.
Methods: Our analysis is based…
Confronting dark energy anisotropic stress
Xu, Lixin; Chang, Baorong
We use currently available cosmic observations to probe and constrain an imperfect dark-energy fluid that is characterized by a constant equation of state w and a constant speed of viscosity cvis2. The model parameter space was scanned using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The results show that the speed of viscosity cvis2
Magnetic clouds' structure in the magnetosheath as observed by Cluster and Geotail: four case studies
Kilpua, E. K. J.; Turc, L.; Fontaine, D. +1 more
Magnetic clouds (MCs) are large-scale magnetic flux ropes ejected from the Sun into the interplanetary space. They play a central role in solar-terrestrial relations as they can efficiently drive magnetic activity in the near-Earth environment. Their impact on the Earth's magnetosphere is often attributed to the presence of southward magnetic fiel…
Characterizing AGB stars in Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) bands
Kong, Xu; Zhu, Qingfeng; He, Jinhua +1 more
Aims: Since asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are bright and extended infrared objects, most Galactic AGB stars saturate the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) detectors and therefore the WISE magnitudes that are restored by applying point-spread-function fitting need to be verified. Statistical properties of circumstellar envelopes…
In situ observation of magnetic reconnection in the front of bursty bulk flow
Huang, Can; Nakamura, Rumi; Lu, Quanming +5 more
Using the Cluster observation in the magnetotail, we investigate the dynamic processes associated with a bursty bulk flow (BBF) event. The BBF is inferred to be caused by magnetic reconnection proceeding to the lobe region in its tail, called "primary reconnection." On the BBF front, another reconnection was directly encountered by one of the four…
Reinvestigating the Clusters Koposov 1 and 2
van Belle, Gerard; Paust, Nathaniel; Wilson, Danielle
We investigate the fundamental parameters of age, distance, and mass function slope for the poorly studied clusters Koposov 1 and Koposov 2. These clusters were discovered recently and tentatively classified as globular clusters. Using the Large Monolithic Imager on Lowell Observatory's Discovery Channel Telescope, we present photometry extending …
Optical-faint, Far-infrared-bright Herschel Sources in the CANDELS Fields: Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies at z > 1 and the Effect of Source Blending
Pérez-González, Pablo G.; Grogin, Norman A.; Koekemoer, Anton M. +13 more
The Herschel very wide field surveys have charted hundreds of square degrees in multiple far-IR (FIR) bands. While the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is currently the best resource for optical counterpart identifications over such wide areas, it does not detect a large number of Herschel FIR sources and leaves their nature undetermined. As a test…
A tailward moving current sheet normal magnetic field front followed by an earthward moving dipolarization front
Goldstein, M. L.; Walsh, B. M.; Moore, T. E. +5 more
A case study is presented using measurements from the Cluster spacecraft and ground-based magnetometers that show a substorm onset propagating from the inner to outer plasma sheet. On 3 October 2005, Cluster, traversing an ion-scale current sheet at the near-Earth plasma sheet, detected a sudden enhancement of Bz, which was immediately …
Dust composition and mass-loss return from the luminous blue variable R71 in the LMC
Waters, L. B. F. M.; Tielens, A. G. G. M.; Meixner, M. +3 more
Context. We present an analysis of mid- and far-infrared (IR) spectrum and spectral energy distribution (SED) of the luminous blue variable (LBV) R71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).
Aims: This work aims to understand the overall contribution of high-mass LBVs to the total dust-mass budget of the interstellar medium (ISM) of the LMC and c…
