Solar wind plasma entry observed by cluster in the high-latitude magnetospheric lobes
Dunlop, M. W.; Facskó, G.; Sun, W. J. +10 more
Using the Cluster data during the period from January to April between 2001 and 2006, we find an observation of solar wind entry due to magnetic reconnection occurred in the terrestrial high-latitude magnetospheric lobes, tailward of the cusps under northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Occurrence rate of solar wind entry events in this s…
The electrical properties of Titan's surface at the Huygens landing site measured with the PWA-HASI Mutual Impedance Probe. New approach and new findings
Lorenz, Ralph D.; Le Gall, Alice; Schwingenschuh, Konrad +9 more
Ten years after the successful landing of the Huygens Probe on the surface of Titan, we reassess the derivation of ground complex permittivity using the PWA-MIP/HASI measurements (Permittivity, Waves and Altimetry-Mutual Impedance Probe/Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument) at the frequencies 45, 90 and 360 Hz. For this purpose, we have develo…
Jupiter's hydrogen bulge: A Cassini perspective
Melin, Henrik; Stallard, T. S.
We present observations of H Ly-α and H2 emissions on the body of Jupiter obtained during the Cassini flyby in late 2000 and early 2001. The H Ly-α emission is highly organised by System III longitude and latitude, peaking at a brightness of 22 kR between 90 and 120° longitude. This is known as the H Ly-α 'bulge'. These observations add…
M Dwarf Activity in the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey: First Catalog and Rotation Periods
Berger, E.; Rest, A.; Chambers, K. C. +10 more
We report on an ongoing project to investigate activity in the M dwarf stellar population observed by the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey (PS1-MDS). Using a custom-built pipeline, we refine an initial sample of ∼4 million sources in PS1-MDS to a sample of 184,148 candidate cool stars using color cuts. Motivated by the well-known relationship betwee…
GTC/CanariCam observations of (99942) Apophis
Alvarez, C.; Delbo, M.; Licandro, J. +2 more
Context. The potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) (99942) Apophis is one of the most remarkable near-Earth asteroids (NEA) in terms of impact hazard. A good determination of its surface thermal inertia is very important in order to evaluate the Yarkovsky effect on its orbital evolution.
Aims: We present thermal infrared observations obtained …
The effect of the induced magnetic field on the electron density vertical profile of the Mars' ionosphere: A Mars Express MARSIS radar data analysis and interpretation, a case study
Lester, M.; Ramírez-Nicolás, M.; Sánchez-Cano, B. +3 more
We report the indirect detection of an induced magnetic field in the ionosphere of Mars and its effects on the electron density behaviour. The observations were made by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) aboard Mars Express, in its Active Ionospheric Sounding mode. During several orbits on June 2006, the ionos…
Magellan LDSS3 emission confirmation of galaxies hosting metal-rich Lyman α absorption systems
Bowen, David V.; York, Donald G.; Florian, Michael +5 more
Using the Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph 3 at the Magellan II Clay Telescope, we target candidate absorption host galaxies detected in deep optical imaging (reaching limiting apparent magnitudes of 23.0-26.5 in g, r, I, and z filters) in the fields of three QSOs, each of which shows the presence of high metallicity, high N_{H I} absorption sys…
Revised calibration for near- and mid-infrared images from ∼4000 pointed observations with AKARI/IRC
Onaka, Takashi; Yamamura, Issei; Usui, Fumihiko +3 more
The Japanese infrared astronomical satellite AKARI performed ∼4000 pointed observations for 16 months until the end of August 2007, when the telescope and instruments were cooled by liquid helium. Observation targets include solar system objects, Galactic objects, local galaxies, and galaxies at cosmological distances. We describe recent updates o…
The interstellar medium in Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal galaxies - I. Content and origin of the interstellar dust
De Looze, Ilse; Baes, Maarten; Bendo, George J. +8 more
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most numerous galaxy population in the Universe, but their main formation and evolution channels are still not well understood. The three dwarf spheroidal satellites (NGC 147, NGC 185, and NGC 205) of the Andromeda galaxy are characterized by very different interstellar medium properties, which might suggest…
A statistical study of magnetospheric electron density using the Cluster spacecraft
Dandouras, I.; Sandhu, J. K.; Yeoman, T. K. +1 more
Observations from the WHISPER (Waves of High frequency and Sounder for Probing of Electron density by Relaxation) instrument on board Cluster, for the interval spanning 2001-2012, are utilized to determine an empirical model describing the total electron density along closed geomagnetic field lines. The model, representing field lines in the regio…
