Kinetic-Hydrodynamic Models of the Solar Wind Interaction with the Partially Ionized Supersonic Flow of the Local Interstellar Gas: Predictions and Interpretations of the Experimental Data
Baranov, Vladimir B.
At present there is no doubt that the local interstellar medium (LISM) is mainly partially ionized hydrogen gas moving with a supersonic flow relative to the solar system. The bulk velocity of this flow is approximately equal ∼26 km/s. Although the interaction of the solar wind with the charged component (below plasma component) of the LISM can be…
Analysis of a sequence of energetic ion and magnetic field events upstream from the Saturnian magnetosphere
Krupp, N.; Krimigis, S. M.; Mitchell, D. G. +5 more
The existence of energetic particle events to ∼200 RS upstream and ∼1300 RS downstream of Saturn was established during the Voyager 1, 2 flybys in 1980 and 1981, respectively. The origin of the events could not be determined with certainty because of lack of particle charge state and species measurements at lower (<300 keV…
Spectral Transitions of an Ultraluminous X-Ray Source, NGC 2403 Source 3
Isobe, Naoki; Gandhi, Poshak; Makishima, Kazuo +8 more
A Suzaku observation of an ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 2403 Source 3, performed on 2006 March 16-17, is reported. The Suzaku XIS spectrum of Source 3 was described as multi-color black-body-like emission from an optically thick accretion disk. The innermost disk temperature and radius were measured to be Tin = 1.08-0.03
The magnetic field and geometry of the oblique shock in the jet of 3C 346
Birkinshaw, M.; Worrall, D. M.; Padgett, C. A. +2 more
We investigate the brightest regions of the kpc-scale jet in the powerful radio galaxy 3C 346, using new optical Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ACS/F606W polarimetry together with Chandra X-ray data and 14.9 and 22.5 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) radio polarimetry. The jet shows a close correspondence between optical and radio morphology, while the X-r…
Search for Remnant Clouds Associated with the TW Hya Association
Tachihara, Kengo; Fukui, Yasuo; Neuhäuser, Ralph
We report on a search for the parental molecular clouds of the TW Hya association (TWA), using CO emission and NaI absorption lines. TWA is the nearest young (∼50pc; ∼10Myr) stellar association; yet in spite of its youth there has been no detection of any associated natal molecular gas, as is the case with other typical young clusters. Using infra…
A Measurement of the Adiabatic Cooling Index for Interstellar Helium Pickup Ions in the Inner Heliosphere
Wurz, Peter; Kallenbach, Reinald; Saul, Lukas
Interstellar neutral gas enters the inner heliosphere where it is ionized and becomes the pickup ion population of the solar wind. It is often assumed that this population will subsequently cool adiabatically, like an expanding ideal gas due, to the divergent flow of the solar wind. Here, we report the first independent measure of the effective ad…
Venus Express bistatic radar: High-elevation anomalous reflectivity
Tyler, G. Leonard; Pätzold, Martin; Häusler, Bernd +2 more
Magellan (MGN) bistatic radar observations in 1994 confirmed earlier Pioneer Venus reports of unusual Venus surface reflectivity and emissivity at elevations above 6054 km radius. They also revealed that the anomalous values of surface dielectric constant $\varepsilon$ near Cleopatra Patera included a large imaginary component ($\varepsilon$ ≈ -i …

The FERRUM project: transition probabilities for forbidden lines in [Fe II] and experimental metastable lifetimes
Nilsson, H.; Hartman, H.; Gurell, J. +5 more
Context: Accurate transition probabilities for forbidden lines are important diagnostic parameters for low-density astrophysical plasmas. In this paper we present experimental atomic data for forbidden [ion{Fe}{ii}] transitions that are observed as strong features in astrophysical spectra.
Aims: We measure lifetimes for the 3d^6(^3G)4s a ^4G{…
Plasmoid-like structures in multiple X line Hall MHD reconnection
Lu, Q. M.; Liu, C. X.; Jin, S. P. +2 more
Driven by a waveform inflow, multiple X line reconnection is initiated in a long current layer, and the plasmoids are bound between two neighboring reconnection sites. We investigate the behaviors of the plasmoid-like structures in the absence and presence of an initial guide field B y0 normalized by B 0 (B 0 is t…
