Hubble Space Telescope Observations of Giant Arcs: High-Resolution Imaging of Distant Field Galaxies
Smail, Ian; Ellis, Richard S.; Kneib, Jean-Paul +4 more
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of eight spectroscopically confirmed giant arcs, pairs, and arclets. These objects have all been studied extensively from the ground, and we demonstrate the unique advantages of HST imaging in the study of such features by a critical comparison of our data with the previous observations. In particula…
H_2_ infrared line emission from S 140: a warm PDR.
Draine, B. T.; Bertoldi, F.; Sternberg, A. +4 more
ISO SWS spectra of H_2_ pure rotational and ro-vibrational transitions, as well as [FeII], and [SiII] fine structure lines were obtained for one position on the photodissociation region (PDR) adjacent to the bright rim of the S 140 HII region. The gas density is =~10^4^cm^-3^ and the incident UV flux χ=~400 at the location of the ionization front.…
Time-Resolved Observations of Jupiter's Far-Ultraviolet Aurora
Casertano, Stefano; Ballester, Gilda E.; Krist, John E. +19 more
Simultaneous imaging and spectroscopic observations of Jupiter's far-ultraviolet aurora covering half a jovian rotation were made on 31 May 1994. The Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images revealed dramatic and rapidly changing auroral features, including discrete longitudinal structures along the auroral ovals, with variable …
ISO-SWS spectrophotometry of galactic Wolf-Rayet stars: preliminary results.
Beintema, D. A.; de Graauw, T.; Morris, P. W. +12 more
ISO-SWS spectra of seven late-type galactic Wolf-Rayet stars are discussed. A high resolution spectrum (2.3-29.6µm, λ/{DELTA}λ=~820-1700) of the WC8 star WR11 (γ^2^ Vel) is shown and its Ne abundance is discussed. Medium resolution spectra (λ/{DELTA}λ=~250-600) of the WC8-9 stars WR48a, WR98a, WR104, WR112 and WR118 show the broad circumstel…
Deep HST V- and I-Band Observations of the Halo of M31: Evidence for Multiple Stellar Populations
Richer, Harvey B.; Fahlman, Gregory G.; Holland, Stephen
We present deep (V~27) V- and I-band stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2 in two fields in the M31 halo. These fields are located 32' and 50' from the center of M31 approximately along the SE minor axis at the locations of the M31 globular star clusters G302 and G3 12, respectively. The M31 halo luminosity functions…
Ultra--Steep-Spectrum Radio Sources. II. Radio, Infrared, Optical, and HST Imaging of High-Redshift 4C Objects
Huang, J. -S.; Chambers, K. C.; Miley, G. K. +3 more
We present radio, infrared, optical, and HST imaging data on eight high-redshift (z > 2) ultra-steep-spectrum 4C radio sources. The radio polarization morphologies are highly asymmetric, indicating large rotation measures across the objects. The optical morphologies are all aligned with the radio axis. The multicolor images show strong asymmetr…
The infrared spectrum of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at 4.6 AU from the Sun.
Altieri, B.; Jorda, L.; Lamy, P. L. +7 more
Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) was observed on 27 April 1996 with the ISOPHOT instrument of ISO when it was at 4.6 AU from the Sun. The 2.5-12µm spectrum was recorded at low resolution. We present here the preliminary results of this observation. The 2.5-5µm spectrum shows emission in the CO_2_ ν_3_ band. The CO_2_ production rate is abou…
An Atlas of Hubble Space Telescope Ultraviolet Images of Nearby Galaxies
Filippenko, Alexei V.; Ho, Luis C.; Maoz, Dan +3 more
We present an atlas of UV (~2300 A) images, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Camera, of the central 22" x 22" of 110 galaxies. The observed galaxies are an unbiased selection constituting about one-half of a complete sample of all large (D > 6') and nearby (V < 2000 km s^-1^) galaxies. This is the first extensive U…
First Detection of Platinum, Osmium, and Lead in a Metal-Poor Halo Star: HD 126238
Truran, James W.; Sneden, Christopher; Cowan, John J. +1 more
Using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have detected the very heavy elements osmium, platinum, and lead in the metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -1.7) giant HD 126238, the first such detections of these elements in a Galactic halo star. Os and Pt are synthesized predominantly via rapid neutron captures (i.…
The Nuclear Disk of NGC 4261: Hubble Space Telescope Images and Ground-based Spectra
Ford, Holland; O'Connell, Robert W.; Ferrarese, Laura +2 more
We present Hubble Space Telescope Planetary Camera images and ground- based spectra of the nuclear region of NGC 4261 = 3C 270. The images reveal a sharply defined disk of dust whose projected major and minor axes are 1.79" and 0.77", respectively. The minor axis of the disk is nearly aligned with the radio axis of 3C 270. Our analysis shows that …
