BeppoSAX observations of the quasar Markarian 205
Petrucci, P. -O.; Courvoisier, T. J. -L.; Beckmann, V. +1 more
We present the first BeppoSAX observation (0.1 to 220 keV) of the quasar
A Study on the Characteristics of the Flux Transfer Events Occourred on March 2, 2001
Liu, Zhen-Xing; Shi, Jian-Kui; Jin, Shu-Ping +2 more
Three flux transfer events (FTEs) were detected in magnetosheath near the south cusp of the dawn side by Cluster II during the interval from 11:00 to 11:15UT on March 2nd, 2001. In this paper, we analyze the magnetic morphology and the plasma characteristics of these events using the magnetic field and plasma data observed by the four spacecrafts …
ISO: highlights of recent results
Salama, A.
The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) was the world's first true orbiting infrared observatory. Equipped with four versatile scientific instruments, it was launched by an Ariane 44P in November 1995 and provided astronomers world-wide with a facility of unprecedented sensitivity and capabilities for a detailed exploration of the universe at infrare…
Evidence for an Ionized Rotating Structure Around RW Aur
Gómez de Castro, Ana I.; Verdugo, Eva
Profiles of the UV semiforbidden lines of C III and Si III of RW Aur have been obtained with the HST/STIS. The C III profile shows two high velocity components at v = +/- 170 km s-1 and a central one. The Si III profile is very broad (FWHM = 293 km s-1) and the high velocity components are unresolved. It is shown that the hig…
Far-Ultraviolet Surveys of Globular Clusters: Searching for the Products of Stellar Collisions and Near Misses
Knigge, C.; Charles, P. A.; Long, K. S. +3 more
Far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations with the Hubble Space Telescope are an excellent way to find and study the hot, blue stellar populations in the cores of globular clusters. These populations include dynamically-formed blue stragglers and interacting binaries (such as cataclysmic variables, i.e. the products of stellar collisions and near misses.…
A possible feature of thermal matter in relativistic jets of radio-loud quasars
Staubert, R.; Courvoisier, T. J. -L.; Wang, J. -M.
It has been suggested that relativistic jets in quasars may contain a considerable amount of thermal matter. In this paper, we explore the possibility that the Kα line from the thermal matter may appear at tens of keV due to a high Doppler blue-shift. In the jet comoving frame, the energy density of photons originally emitted by the accretion disk…
Highlights from HST/NICMOS
Schneider, G.
The near-infrared camera and multi-object spectrometer (NICMOS) was installed in the Hubble Space Telescope in February 1997. After 22 months of operation the 110 kg supply of solid N 2, which cooled the NICMOS-3 HgCdTe detectors, was exhausted. The cryostat warmed up leaving the instrument in an electromechanically functional, but scie…
Beagle-2 position determination from the returned camera panoramas using MOLA data
Michael, G. G.
After the Beagle-2 lander of the Mars Express mission comes to rest on the surface of Isidis Planitia in late December 2003 to carry out a range of geochemistry and exobiology experiments, there will be considerable interest in determining its exact location. This work considers the feasibility of identifying topographic features seen in the Mars …
Compiled catalogue of stellar proper motions in the Hipparcos system in MEGA program areas
Kharchenko, N. V.
The compiled catalogue of proper motions in the Hipparcos system MEGA-H is created for 18169 stars. The data of the original catalogue (MEGA-G) and All-Sky Compiled Catalogue of 2.5 million stars (ASCC-2.5) are used. The errors of magnitude equation and zero-point are taken into account in each 47 program areas individually.
X-rays from the Local Bubble
Freyberg, Michael J.
Thermal plasma emission in the soft X-ray band (0.1–2.0 keV)is believed to be responsible for the bulk of the X-ray intensityseen from the Local Bubble, a low-density cavity extending over∼ 70–200 pc around the Sun. The state of the hot plasmais still a matter of discussion as previous instrumentation like aboardROSAT was not able to unambiguously…
