The Reddest DR3 SDSS/XMM-Newton Quasars
DOI: 10.1086/592083 Bibcode: 2008ApJ...688..128Y

Elvis, M.; Risaliti, G.; Young, M.

We have cross-correlated the SDSS DR3 Schneider et al. (2005) quasar catalog with the XMM-Newton archive. Color and redshift selections (g - r >= 0.5 and 0.9 < z < 2.1) result in a sample of 17 red, moderate-redshift quasars. The redshift selection minimizes possible contamination due to host galaxy emission and Lyα forest absorption. Bot…

Downward current electron beam observed by Cluster and FAST
DOI: 10.1029/2007JA012643 Bibcode: 2008JGRA..113.6202W

Owen, Christopher J.; Dunlop, Malcolm W.; Wright, Andrew N. +1 more

We report observations from a conjunction of FAST and Cluster during an interval of downward current at an MLT of 3-4 h on field lines mapping to the PSBL. Both spacecraft see upgoing electrons with an energy of a few hundred eV, suggesting substantial acceleration has occurred below FAST's altitude of 3200 km. At Cluster, isolated bursts of elect…

An infrared study of the double nucleus in NGC3256
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2007.12705.x Bibcode: 2008MNRAS.384..316L

Hoyer, S.; Ward, M.; Lira, P. +1 more

We present new resolved near- and mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and N-band spectroscopy of the two nuclei in the merger system NGC3256, the most IR luminous galaxy in the nearby Universe. The results from the spectral energy distribution fit to the data are consistent with previous estimates of the amount of obscuration towards the nuclei and the …

Correlation length of magnetosheath fluctuations: Cluster statistics
DOI: 10.5194/angeo-26-2503-2008 Bibcode: 2008AnGeo..26.2503G

Němeček, Z.; Gutynska, O.; Afránková, J. Å.

Magnetosheath parameters are usually described by gasdynamic or magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models but these models cannot account for one of the most important sources of magnetosheath fluctuations the foreshock. Earlier statistical processing of a large amount of magnetosheath observations has shown that the magnetosheath magnetic field and plasma…

The evolution of mirror type magnetic fluctuations in the magnetosheath based on multipoint observations
DOI: 10.1016/j.asr.2007.03.039 Bibcode: 2008AdSpR..41.1537T

Balogh, A.; Dandouras, I.; Erdős, G. +1 more

Two orbits were selected in January February 2006 when the separation between the Cluster spacecraft was large and mirror type magnetic field fluctuations were observed by all spacecraft in different regions of the terrestrial magnetosheath. Minimum variance analysis was applied to find the mirror type fluctuations, and the amplitude of the fluctu…

Small-scale, localized electromagnetic waves observed by Cluster: Result of magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions
DOI: 10.1029/2008GL035956 Bibcode: 2008GeoRL..3522107S

Karlsson, T.; Streltsov, A. V.

We present results from a numerical study of small-scale, localized electromagnetic structures measured by the Cluster satellites on May 19, 2002, in the nightside magnetosphere. A comprehensive analysis of these structures by Karlsson et al. (2004), Johansson et al. (2004) and Marklund et al. (2004) demonstrates that they can be interpreted as tw…

The Solar Eruption of 2005 May 13 and Its Effects: Long-Baseline Interplanetary Scintillation Observations of the Earth-Directed Coronal Mass Ejection
DOI: 10.1086/591520 Bibcode: 2008ApJ...683L..79B

Breen, A. R.; Jackson, B. V.; Bisi, M. M. +7 more

Long-baseline observations of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) provide a unique source of information on solar wind speed and meridional direction across the inner regions of the solar system. We report the results of a series of coordinated IPS observations of an Earth-directed CME. A significant development in the interpretation of these data …

Direct observation of warping in the plasma sheet of Saturn
DOI: 10.1029/2008GL035970 Bibcode: 2008GeoRL..3524201C

Krimigis, S. M.; Mitchell, D. G.; Paranicas, C. +2 more

The ENA images from the Ion Neutral CAmera (INCA) on the Cassini spacecraft are projected onto the noon-midnight plane of Sun-Saturn orbital coordinates, and a composite ``image'' of Saturn's plasma sheet is constructed from dawn-side observations of 20-50 keV hydrogens obtained from days 352 to 361 in 2004. The maxima in the intensity contours de…

Interacting jets from binary protostars
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20078609 Bibcode: 2008A&A...478..453M

Bacciotti, F.; Murphy, G. C.; Lery, T. +3 more

Aims: We investigate potential models that could explain why multiple proto-stellar systems predominantly show single jets. During their formation, stars most frequently produce energetic outflows and jets. However, binary jets have only been observed in a very small number of systems.
Methods: We model numerically 3D binary jets for various o…

The Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): Transient X-Ray Sources Discovered in M33
DOI: 10.1086/587885 Bibcode: 2008ApJ...680.1120W

Mazeh, T.; Williams, Benjamin F.; Sasaki, Manami +7 more

The Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33) has acquired seven fields of ACIS data covering M33 with 200 ks of exposure in each field. A catalog from the first 10 months of data, along with archival Chandra observations dating back to the year 2000, is currently available. We have searched these data for transient sources that are measured to have a…
