Dynamics of planetary ions in the induced magnetospheres of Venus and Mars
Luhmann, J. G.; Brain, D. A.; Jarvinen, R.
We compare dynamics of planetary ions in the induced magnetospheres of Venus and Mars in a global hybrid simulation to study factors controlling the ion escape at unmagnetized planets. In the simulation we find that the finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects of escaping heavy ions are stronger at Mars than Venus under nominal solar wind conditions. Bu…
Peering Through the Dust: NuSTAR Observations of Two FIRST-2MASS Red Quasars
Brandt, W. N.; Koss, Michael; Yaqoob, Tahir +17 more
Some reddened quasars appear to be transitional objects in the paradigm of merger-induced black hole growth/galaxy evolution, where a heavily obscured nucleus starts to be unveiled by powerful quasar winds evacuating the surrounding cocoon of dust and gas. Hard X-ray observations are able to peer through this gas and dust, revealing the properties…
The TANAMI Multiwavelength Program: Dynamic spectral energy distributions of southern blazars
Buson, S.; Gehrels, N.; Dauser, T. +32 more
Context. Simultaneous broadband spectral and temporal studies of blazars are an important tool for investigating active galactic nuclei (AGN) jet physics.
Aims: We study the spectral evolution between quiescent and flaring periods of 22 radio-loud AGN through multiepoch, quasi-simultaneous broadband spectra. For many of these sources these ar…
The ATCA REXCESS Diffuse Emission Survey (ARDES) - I. Detection of a giant radio halo and a likely radio relic
Pratt, G. W.; Johnston-Hollitt, M.; Shakouri, S.
We present the results of the radio halo survey of 16 REXCESS southern clusters up to a redshift of 0.2 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 1.4 and 2.1 GHz. This cluster sample called the ATCA REXCESS Diffuse Emission Survey (ARDES) includes clusters in a wide range of X-ray luminosities and is morphologically unbiased. We find tw…
The X-Ray Luminosity Function of Low-mass X-Ray Binaries in Early-type Galaxies, Their Metal-rich, and Metal-poor Globular Clusters
Zepf, Stephen E.; Peacock, Mark B.
We present the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the globular clusters (GCs) and fields of seven early-type galaxies. These galaxies are selected to have both deep Chandra observations, which allow their LMXB populations to be observed to X-ray luminosities of 1037-1038 erg s-1, …
Brown dwarf disks with Herschel: Linking far-infrared and (sub)-mm fluxes
Greaves, Jane; Testi, Leonardo; Jayawardhana, Ray +4 more
Brown dwarf disks are excellent laboratories to test our understanding of disk physics in an extreme parameter regime. In this paper we investigate a sample of 29 well-characterized brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars, for which Herschel far-infrared fluxes and (sub)-mm fluxes are available. We measured new Herschel/PACS fluxes for 11 objects and…
Emergence of Granular-sized Magnetic Bubbles Through the Solar Atmosphere. III. The Path to the Transition Region
De Pontieu, Bart; Carlsson, Mats; Ortiz, Ada +4 more
We study, for the first time, the ascent of granular-sized magnetic bubbles from the solar photosphere through the chromosphere into the transition region and above. Such events occurred in a flux emerging region in NOAA 11850 on 2013 September 25. During that time, the first co-observing campaign between the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) and …
On the properties of the interstellar medium in extremely metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxies. A VIMOS-IFU study of the cometary galaxy and Ly α absorber Tol 65
Demarco, R.; Humphrey, A.; Roche, N. +5 more
In this study, we present high-resolution VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph integral field unit spectroscopy (VIMOS-IFU) of the extremely metal-poor H II/blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Tol 65. The optical appearance of this galaxy shows clearly a cometary morphology with a bright main body and an extended and diffuse stellar tail. We focus on the…
Revisiting the role of the thermally pulsating asymptotic-giant-branch phase in high-redshift galaxies
Daddi, Emanuele; Maraston, Claudia; Renzini, Alvio +3 more
We study the debated contribution from thermally pulsing asymptotic-giant-branch (TP-AGB) stars in evolutionary population synthesis models. We investigate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a sample of 51 spectroscopically confirmed, high-z (1.3 < zspec < 2.7), galaxies using three evolutionary population synthesis model…
BICEP2/Keck Array. VII. Matrix Based E/B Separation Applied to Bicep2 and the Keck Array
Ade, P. A. R.; Bock, J. J.; Crill, B. P. +62 more
A linear polarization field on the sphere can be uniquely decomposed into an E-mode and a B-mode component. These two components are analytically defined in terms of spin-2 spherical harmonics. Maps that contain filtered modes on a partial sky can also be decomposed into E-mode and B-mode components. However, the lack of full sky information preve…
