Thirty Years of SN 1980K: Evidence for Light Echoes
Barlow, Michael J.; Meixner, Margaret; Clayton, Geoffrey C. +7 more
We report optical and mid-infrared photometry of SN 1980K between 2004 and 2010, which shows slow monotonic fading consistent with previous spectroscopic and photometric observations made 8-17 yr after outburst. The slow rate of change over two decades suggests that this evolution may result from scattered and thermal light echoes off of extended …
The Latitude Distribution of Small-scale Magnetic Elements in Solar Cycle 23
Wang, J. X.; Jin, C. L.
With the unique data set from full-disk observations provided by Michelson Doppler Imager on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory in the interval embodying solar cycle 23, we have found that the cyclic variations of numbers and total flux of these small-scale magnetic elements covering fluxes of (2.9-32.0) × 1018 Mx and (4.27-38…
Recovery of the Historical SN1957D in X-Rays with Chandra
Soria, Roberto; Blair, William P.; Whitmore, Bradley C. +6 more
SN1957D, located in one of the spiral arms of M83, is one of the small number of extragalactic supernovae (SNe) that has remained detectable at radio and optical wavelengths during the decades after its explosion. Here, we report the first detection of SN1957D in X-rays, as part of a 729 ks observation of M83 with Chandra. The X-ray luminosity (0.…
The dark matter distribution in z ~ 0.5 clusters of galaxies. I. Determining scaling relations with weak lensing masses
Arnaud, M.; Pointecouteau, E.; Pratt, G. W. +3 more
The total mass of clusters of galaxies is a key parameter for studing massive halos. It relates to numerous gravitational and baryonic processes at play in the framework of large-scale structure formation, thus rendering its determination both important and challenging. From a sample of the 11 X-ray bright clusters selected from the EXCPRES sample…
The Truncated Disk from Suzaku Data of GX 339-4 in the Extreme Very High State
Done, Chris; Ueda, Yoshihiro; Kubota, Aya +4 more
We report on the geometry of accretion disk and high-energy coronae in the strong Comptonization state (the very high/steep power law/hard intermediate state) based on a Suzaku observation of the famous Galactic black hole GX 339-4. These data were taken just before the peak of the 2006-2007 outburst, and the average X-ray luminosity in the 0.7-20…
Latitudinal and altitudinal controls of Titan's dune field morphometry
Janssen, M. A.; Hayes, A. G.; Encrenaz, P. +5 more
Dune fields dominate ∼13% of Titan's surface and represent an important sink of carbon in the methane cycle. Herein, we discuss correlations in dune morphometry with altitude and latitude. These correlations, which have important implications in terms of geological processes and climate on Titan, are investigated through the microwave electromagne…
Extreme Host Galaxy Growth in Powerful Early-epoch Radio Galaxies
Haas, Martin; Barthel, Peter; Wilkes, Belinda +1 more
During the first half of the universe's life, a heyday of star formation must have occurred because many massive galaxies are in place after that epoch in cosmic history. Our observations with the revolutionary Herschel Space Observatory reveal vigorous optically obscured star formation in the ultra-massive hosts of many powerful high-redshift 3C …
Measuring star formation in high-z massive galaxies: a mid-infrared to submillimetre study of the GOODS NICMOS Survey sample
Netterfield, C. B.; Scott, D.; Halpern, M. +16 more
We present measurements of the mean mid-infrared to submillimetre flux densities of massive (M★≳ 1011 M⊙) galaxies at redshifts 1.7 < z < 2.9, obtained by stacking positions of known objects taken from the GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS) catalogue on maps at 24 ?m (Spitzer/MIPS); 70, 100 and 160 ?m (Herschel/PACS);…
Mutual events in the Cold Classical transneptunian binary system Sila and Nunam
Buie, M. W.; Rabinowitz, D. L.; Grundy, W. M. +9 more
Hubble Space Telescope observations between 2001 and 2010 resolved the binary components of the Cold Classical transneptunian object (79360) Sila-Nunam (provisionally designated 1997 CS29). From these observations we have determined the circular, retrograde mutual orbit of Nunam relative to Sila with a period of 12.50995 ± 0.00036 days …
Cores in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) seen in the Hi-GAL survey between l= 300° and 330°
Peretto, N.; Elia, D.; Griffin, M. J. +15 more
We have used data taken as part of the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane survey (Hi-GAL) to study 3171 infrared dark cloud (IRDC) candidates that were identified in the mid-IR (8 µm) by Spitzer (we refer to these as `Spitzer-dark' regions). They all lie in the range l= 300-330° and |b|≤ 1°. Of these, only 1205 were seen in emission in the far…
