We report the detection of 21-cm absorption at zabs = 0.656 towards 1622 + 238 (3C336). The line is very broad with a full width to half-maximum of 235 km s-1, giving a velocity-integrated optical depth of . The centroid of the line is offset from that of the known damped Lyman α absorption system (DLA) by 50 km s-1

A statistical study of wave propagation in coronal holes
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20065592 Bibcode: 2007A&A...463..713O

Doyle, J. G.; Banerjee, D.; O'Shea, E.

Aims:To find evidence for propagating magnetoacoustic waves in equatorial and polar coronal hole locations.
Methods: Using temporal series data from the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on SOHO, we study oscillations found in radiant flux and velocity measurements from transition region (O V 629) and coronal lines (Mg X 624, Si XII 520). …

On the X-ray and optical properties of the Be star HD 110432: a very hard-thermal X-ray emitter
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20077295 Bibcode: 2007A&A...474..983L

Motch, C.; Smith, M. A.; Torrejón, J. M. +2 more

HD 110432 is the first proposed, and best studied, member of a growing group of Be stars with X-ray properties similar to γ Cas. These stars exhibit hard-thermal X-rays that are variable on all measurable timescales. This emission contrasts with the soft emission of “normal" massive stars and with the non-ther…

IGR J00234+6141: a new INTEGRAL source identified as an intermediate polar
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20077877 Bibcode: 2007A&A...473..185B

de Martino, D.; Masetti, N.; Bonnet-Bidaud, J. M. +2 more

Context: Following an extensive survey of the galactic plane by the INTEGRAL satellite, new hard X-ray sources are discovered with a significant fraction of Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) among them.
Aims: We report here the identification of one of these hard X-ray sources, IGR J00234+6141, as an accreting magnetic white dwarf of intermediate po…

Magnetosheath plasma expansion: Hybrid simulations
DOI: 10.1029/2007GL029728 Bibcode: 2007GeoRL..3415104T

Hellinger, Petr; Dandouras, Iannis; Escoubet, C. Philippe +3 more

We investigate the effect of slow expansion on a magnetosheath plasma and low-frequency waves using a two-dimensional hybrid expanding box simulation. We start our simulation with a homogeneous high beta plasma, which is marginally stable to the mirror and proton cyclotron instabilities. The expansion is imposed as an external force: the physical …

Jets from young stars
DOI: 10.1007/s10509-007-9531-7 Bibcode: 2007Ap&SS.311...15B

Bally, John

Most stars produce spectacular jets during their formation. There are thousands of young stars within 500 pc of the Sun and many power jets. Thus protostellar jets may be the most common type of collimated astrophysical outflow. Shocks powered by outflows excite many emission lines, exhibit a rich variety of structure, and motions with velocities …

Near-Infrared Polarimetry of the Eagle Nebula (M 16)
DOI: 10.1093/pasj/59.3.507 Bibcode: 2007PASJ...59..507S

Tamura, Motohide; Hashimoto, Jun; Kusakabe, Nobuhiko +10 more

We carried out deep and wide (∼ 8 × 8) JHKs imaging polarimetry in the southern region of the Eagle Nebula (M 16). The polarization intensity map reveals that two YSOs with near-IR reflection nebulae are located at the tips of two famous molecular pillars (Pillars 1 and 2) facing toward the exciting stars of M 16. The centrosymmetric po…

Hard X-Ray Intensity Distribution along Hα Ribbons
DOI: 10.1086/520812 Bibcode: 2007ApJ...664L.127J

Liu, Chang; Jing, Ju; Wang, Haimin +2 more

Unusual ribbon-like hard X-ray sources were found with the RHESSI observation of a 2B/M8.0 flare on 2005 May 13. We use this unique observation to investigate the spatial distribution of the hard X-ray intensity along the ribbons and compare it with the local magnetic reconnection rate and energy release rate predicted by the standard magnetic rec…

Multiwavelength Study of Young Massive Star Clusters in the Interacting Galaxy Arp 24
DOI: 10.1086/512125 Bibcode: 2007AJ....133.1710C

Wu, Hong; Cao, Chen

We made a multiwavelength study of young massive star clusters (YSCs) in the interacting galaxy Arp 24 using optical and ultraviolet images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and narrowband Hα images and optical spectra from t…

Aims:We have studied the X-ray source population of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) to search for new members of the Taurus-Auriga star forming region.
Methods: Candidate members have been selected among the X-ray sources detected in 24 fields of the XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud, having an IR counterpart in the 2MA…
