The microscope for Beagle 2
Keller, H. U.; Hviid, S. F.; Thomas, N. +13 more
The microscope for the Beagle 2 lander, which was launched as part of the European Space Agency's Mars Express mission on 2 June 2003, will provide images of the Martian surface at around 6 µm resolution. It will provide optical images of the surface of Mars at a resolution 5 times higher than any other experiment currently planned. The devi…
Transient reconnection in the cusp during strongly negative IMF By
Farrugia, C. J.; Buchert, S.; Khotyaintsev, Y. +6 more
We investigate transient magnetic reconnection (flux transfer events, FTEs) in the cusp and its ionospheric signatures. We present in situ observations by the Polar spacecraft of multiple impulsive plasma injections and related magnetopause crossings in the outer stagnant cusp of the northern hemisphere. At this time the interplanetary magnetic fi…
Prediction performance of space weather forecast centers following the extreme events of October and November 2003
Oler, Cary
A review and analysis of the five strongest interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) events of late October and early November 2003 (the strongest events of the "Halloween" epoch) are studied with respect to the prediction performance of five space weather forecast centers. Accurate time-of-arrival predictions and rapid responses to the upstrea…
Searching for radiative pumping lines of OH masers: II. The 53.3 µm absorption line towards 1612 MHz OH maser sources
Chen, P. S.; He, J. H.
This is the second paper in a series aiming at searching for infrared pumping lines for galactic 1612 MHz OH masers. Our paper I is devoted to the 34.6 µm absorption lines in ISO SWS spectra towards a large sample of galactic OH/IR sources. This paper analyzes the 53.3 µm line in the ISO LWS spectra towards a similar sample of OH/IR so…
Chromospheric Oscillations in an Equatorial Coronal Hole
McIntosh, Scott W.; Tarbell, Theodore D.; Fleck, Bernhard
We report phase-difference and travel-time analyses of propagating chromospheric oscillations in and around an equatorial coronal hole as observed by TRACE. Our results suggest a significant change in atmospheric conditions at the base of the chromosphere inside the coronal hole relative to its boundary and quiet-Sun regions.
Proper Motion and Kinematics of the Ansae in NGC 7009
Monteiro, Hektor; Schwarz, Hugo E.; Fernández, Rodrigo
We have measured the proper motion (PM) and kinematics of the ansae in NGC 7009 using high-dispersion echelle spectra and archive narrowband Hubble Space Telescope images. Assuming that the ansae are moving at equal and opposite velocities from the central star, we obtain a system radial velocity of -53+/-2 km s-1, the eastern ansa appr…
EIT Observations of the 15 November 1999 Mercury Transit
Auchère, F.; Artzner, G. E.
The Mercury transit of 15 November 1999 has been observed from space by the SOHO and TRACE spacecraft. We exploited the data recorded by EIT/SOHO to determine the stray-light level and the plate-scale of the instrument. The asymmetric distribution of stray light across the images is confirmed, but the absolute amount was found to be higher than pr…
The phase curve of cometary dust: Observations of comet 96P/Machholz 1 at large phase angle with the SOHO LASCO C3 coronagraph
Schwenn, R.; Jockers, K.; Grynko, Ye.
We have analyzed brightness and polarization data of comet 96P/Machholz, obtained with the SOHO-LASCO C3 coronagraph at phase angles up to 167° and 157°, respectively. The polarization data are characteristic of a typical dusty comet. Within error limits the corresponding trigonometric fit describes the new data measured at l…
Pulsational Evidence for Mass Loss in NGC 1866 Cepheids
Marconi, M.; Musella, I.; Caputo, F. +2 more
Available observational data for the 20 known Cepheids in the LMC cluster NGC 1866 have been compared with Hubble Space Telescope observations, discovering in the cluster central region five additional variables, one of which appears to be a Cepheid candidate. We also reach the conclusion that only the photometric data for the seven variables in t…
CDS wide slit time-series of EUV coronal bright points
Foley, C. R.; Doyle, J. G.; Nakariakov, V. M. +1 more
Wide slit (90''×240'') movies of four Extreme Ultraviolet coronal bright points (BPs) obtained with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO) have been inspected. The wavelet analysis of the He I 584.34 Å, O V 629.73 Å and Mg VII/IX 368 Å time-series confirms the oscillat…
