Ultraviolet spectra of asteroids
Butterworth, P. S.; Hunt, G. E.; Moore, V. +2 more
Spectra over the range 2,100-3,200 Å have been obtained for the three largest asteroids-Ceres, Pallas and Vesta-using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite1. These represent the first detailed UV reflectivity data for asteroids. They extend the numerous measurements already carried out in the visible and IR2,3
IUE observations of the hot components in two symbiotic stars
Kafatos, M.; Michalitsianos, A. G.; Hobbs, R. W. +1 more
Recent IUE observations reveal striking differences in the UV spectra of two symbiotic stars, R Aqr and RW Hya. RW Hya is found to be an unexpectedly intense source of UV radiation. The measurements reported here demonstrate the presence of a hot component in each star, supporting the view that each is a binary system with a luminous red primary a…
Ultraviolet spectroscopy of the VELA SNR.
Danziger, I. J.; Clark, D. H.; Wood, R.
A preliminary ultraviolet spectrum secured from the IUE satellite, of a bright filament in the Vela supernova remnant, displays both emission-line and continuum components. The emission-line spectrum shows the same anomalously low carbon-line strength reported previously for the Cygnus Loop. The continuum emission may be explained in terms of norm…
Does phi Herculis have a corona ?
Stickland, D. J.; Dworetsky, M. M.
High resolution IUE spectra of Phi Herculis have been searched for indicators of a chromosphere or transition region but none have been found, which could mean that the soft X-rays observed by HEAO-1 may have an alternative origin than a conventional corona in this Hg-Mn star. The possibility that white dwarfs could be responsible for the X-rays f…
IUE observations of the ultraviolet spectrum of the close binary del Pic.
Feibelman, W. A.; Kondo, Y.; McCluskey, G. E.
The eclipsing binary δ Pic has been observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. Two high-resolution spectrograms in the far-ultraviolet (NA1 150-1900) and one high-resolution spectrogram in the mid-ultraviolet of (λλ1900-3200) were obtained. The far-ultraviolet resonance lines of C III (λ1175) and Si IV (λλ1393 and 1402) …
Simultaneous spectroscopic (UV MG II and AL II lines) photometric variations of zet1 SCO (HD 152236).
Clavel, J.; Bianchi, L.; Cassatella, A. +2 more
Repeated IUE observations of HD152236 show variations in the line profiles of the two Mg II doublets at about 2800 A and of the Al II lambda 1670 line. A series of puffs in the expanding envelope have been identified, implying a non-stationary mass loss process. A phase of particularly discontinuous loss of matter has been correlated with a sharp …
IUE observations of N V, a diagnostic of hot interstellar gas
Smith, L. J.; Hartquist, T. W.
The paper reports IUE observations of interstellar N V toward a number of Wolf-Rayet stars and compares the derived number density with that predicted by one theory of the interstellar medium. The observed N V/O VI ratio implies that most of the hot gas in the interstellar medium is at T about 2.3 x 10 to the 5th K.
The far-ultraviolet spectrum of Kap CET observed from IUE.
Rego, M.; Fernandez-Figueroa, M. J.; Cornide, M.
A line identification of the spectrum of the G dwarf star Kappa Cet from 1150 to 1950 A, obtained from the IUE satellite in the low resolution mode is presented. The identification of strong emission lines and various absorption lines and their corresponding intensities are indicated. Certain spectral features, such as Si III, 1335 A are suspected…
A search for absorption in the fourth positive system of CO in the spectrum of the planetary nebula IC 418.
Clavel, J.; Flower, D. R.
The continuous emission of IC 418 has been observed at high dispersion with the IUE satellite and the spectrum searched for the A1Π-&Chi1Σ+ bands of CO. It was not possible to unequivocally detect these CO bands in IC 418. However, an upper limit to the absorption by CO was determined, giving a column density w…
Analysis of the far-ultraviolet silicon lines in G dwarf stars
Rego, M.; Fernandez-Figueroa, M. J.; Cornide, M.
The structure of the outer stellar regions is investigated for four G type dwarfs observed with the IUE satellite. Line fluxes of the Si II lines at 1817 A, 1808 A, and 1309 A and Si III at 1206 A are used to obtain temperatures and electronic densities. A temperature of 16,000 K is found from the lines at 1817 A and 1808 A, 26,000 K from the 1309…
