Far-Ultraviolet and X-Ray Observations of the Reverse Shock in the Small Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant 1E 0102.2-7219
DOI: 10.1086/500789 Bibcode: 2006ApJ...642..260S

Blair, William P.; Sasaki, Manami; Smith, Randall K. +4 more

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and X-Ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) data for the reverse shock of the O-rich supernova remnant (SNR) 1E 0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The FUSE observations cover three regions with significantly different optical [O III] intensities, all associated with the relativ…

The optical to γ-ray emission of the Crab pulsar: a multicomponent model
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20065118 Bibcode: 2006A&A...459..859M

Cusumano, G.; Campana, R.; Mineo, T. +1 more

We present a multicomponent model to explain the features of the pulsed emission and spectrum of the Crab Pulsar, on the basis of X and γ-ray observations obtained with BeppoSAX, INTEGRAL and CGRO. This model explains the evolution of the pulse shape and of the phase-resolved spectra, ranging from the optical/UV to the GeV energy band, on the assu…

The association between gas and galaxies - I. CFHT spectroscopy and pair analysis
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10013.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.367.1261M

Morris, Simon L.; Jannuzi, Buell T.

We investigate the relative distribution of the gaseous contents of the Universe (as traced by a sample of Lyα absorbers), and the luminous baryonic matter (as traced by a redshift survey of galaxies in the same volume searched for Lyα absorbers), along 16 lines of sight (LOS) between redshifts 0 and 1. Our galaxy redshift survey was made with the…

Formation of Saturn's ring spokes by lightning-induced electron beams
DOI: 10.1029/2006GL028146 Bibcode: 2006GeoRL..3321202J

Krupp, N.; Woch, J.; Fränz, M. +10 more

Spokes are near-linear markings sometimes visible on Saturn's rings. They are widely accepted as being electrostatically-levitated sheets of ~0.6 micron-radius charged grains. Previously-suggested causes of the grains' charging do not agree with all spoke characteristics, which include their rapid generation, localized formation primarily in Satur…

The X-ray properties of optically selected z > 0.6 clusters in the European Southern Observatory Distant Cluster Survey
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10796.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.371.1777J

Pelló, R.; Milvang-Jensen, B.; Halliday, C. +11 more

We present XMM-Newton observations of three optically selected z > 0.6 clusters from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS), comprising the first results of a planned X-ray survey of the full EDisCS high-redshift sample. The EDisCS clusters were identified in the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey as surface br…

The Influence of Mass and Environment on the Evolution of Early-Type Galaxies
DOI: 10.1086/507582 Bibcode: 2006ApJ...647L..99D

Lanzoni, Barbara; Jørgensen, Inger; di Serego Alighieri, Sperello

We report on a uniform comparative analysis of the fundamental parameters of early-type galaxies at z~1 down to MB<=-20, both in the field and in clusters. The changes in the M/LB ratio from z~1 to today are larger for lower mass galaxies in all environments, and are larger in the field than in clusters for galaxies with t…

Lightning detection on the Venus Express mission
DOI: 10.1016/j.pss.2006.04.026 Bibcode: 2006P&SS...54.1344R

Russell, C. T.; Zhang, T. L.; Strangeway, R. J.

Radio waves and optical flashes consistent with the lightning generation have been reported frequently at Venus. These observations point to the presence of electrical discharges in the sulfuric acid clouds of Venus. A particularly strong whistler-mode signal has been found propagating parallel to the magnetic field in the night ionosphere near 10…

Estimated IR and phosphorescence emission fluxes for specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Red Rectangle
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20053738 Bibcode: 2006A&A...446..537M

Joblin, C.; Toublanc, D.; Mulas, G. +1 more

Following tentative identification of the blue luminescence in the Red Rectangle by Vijh et al., we computed absolute fluxes for the vibrational IR emission and phosphorescence bands of three small polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The calculated IR spectra were compared with available ISO observations. A subset of the emission …

On the Propagation and Dissipation of Alfvén Waves in Coronal Holes
DOI: 10.1007/s11207-006-0141-2 Bibcode: 2006SoPh..237..143D

Srivastava, A. K.; Dwivedi, B. N.

We underline the importance of Alfvén wave dissipation in the magnetic funnels through the viscous and resistive plasma. Our results show that Alfvén waves are one of the primary energy sources in the innermost part of coronal holes where the solar wind outflow starts.

XMM-Newton observations of the complex spin pulse of the intermediate polar PQ Geminorum
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10368.x Bibcode: 2006MNRAS.369.1229E

Hellier, Coel; Ramsay, Gavin; Evans, P. A.

The intermediate polar PQ Geminorum shows a complex pulsation, caused by a spinning white dwarf, which varies markedly with wavelength. We report XMM-Newton observations, including the soft and hard X-ray bands and the first ultraviolet light curves of this star. We update the ephemeris for PQ Gem allowing us to align these data with a compilation…
