Phase-resolved NuSTAR and Swift-XRT Observations of Magnetar 4U 0142+61
An, Hongjun; Kaspi, Victoria M.; Guillot, Sebastien +12 more
We present temporal and spectral analysis of simultaneous 0.5-79 keV Swift-XRT and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array observations of the magnetar 4U 0142+61. The pulse profile changes significantly with photon energy between 3 and 35 keV. The pulse fraction increases with energy, reaching a value of ≈20%, similar to that observed in 1E 1841-04…

Simultaneous field-aligned currents at Swarm and Cluster satellites
Dunlop, M. W.; Carr, C. M.; Bogdanova, Y. V. +13 more
We show for the first time, with direct, multispacecraft calculations of electric current density, and other methods, matched signatures of field-aligned currents (FACs) sampled simultaneously near the ionosphere at low (~500 km altitude) orbit and in the magnetosphere at medium (~2.5 RE altitude) orbits using a particular Swarm and Clu…
A Survey of Irradiated Pillars, Globules, and Jets in the Carina Nebula
Smith, N.; Bally, J.; Hartigan, P. +1 more
We present wide-field, deep narrowband H2, Brγ, Hα, [S ii], [O iii], and broadband I- and K-band images of the Carina star formation region. The new images provide a large-scale overview of all the H2 and Brγ emission present in over a square degree centered on this signature star-forming complex. By comparing these images wi…
Measurements of the Mean Diffuse Galactic Light Spectrum in the 0.95-1.65 µm Band from CIBER
Lee, H. M.; Bock, J.; Cooray, A. +14 more
We report measurements of the diffuse galactic light (DGL) spectrum in the near-infrared, spanning the wavelength range 0.95-1.65 µm by the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment. Using the low-resolution spectrometer calibrated for absolute spectro-photometry, we acquired long-slit spectral images of the total diffuse sky brightness toward s…
Kinetic simulations of secondary reconnection in the reconnection jet
Sahraoui, F.; Aunai, N.; Deng, X. H. +8 more
Magnetic reconnection, as one important energy dissipation process in plasmas, has been extensively studied in the past several decades. Magnetic reconnection occurring in the downstream of a primary X line is referred to as secondary reconnection. In this paper, we used kinetic simulations to investigate the secondary reconnection in detail. We f…
An automated classification approach to ranking photospheric proxies of magnetic energy build-up
McAteer, R. T. J.; Al-Ghraibah, A.; Boucheron, L. E.
Aims: We study the photospheric magnetic field of ~2000 active regions over solar cycle 23 to search for parameters that may be indicative of energy build-up and its subsequent release as a solar flare in the corona.
Methods: We extract three sets of parameters: (1) snapshots in space and time: total flux, magnetic gradients, and neutral…
Neon and Oxygen Abundances and Abundance Ratio in the Solar Corona
Landi, E.; Testa, P.
In this work we determine the Ne/O abundance ratio from Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) off-disk observations of quiescent streamers over the 1996-2008 period. We find that the Ne/O ratio is approximately constant over solar cycle 23 from 1996 to 2005, at a value of 0.099 ± 0.017…
The evolution of the emission measure distribution in the core of an active region
Del Zanna, Giulio; Tripathi, Durgesh; Mason, Helen +2 more
We study the spatial distribution and evolution of the slope of the emission measure (EM) between 1 MK and 3 MK in the core of the active region (AR) NOAA 11193, first when it appeared near the central meridian and then again when it reappeared after a solar rotation. We use observations recorded by the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EI…
Spatially resolved physical conditions of molecular gas and potential star formation tracers in M 83, revealed by the Herschel SPIRE FTS
Bournaud, F.; Lebouteiller, V.; Madden, S. C. +19 more
We investigate the physical properties of the molecular and ionized gas, and their relationship to the star formation and dust properties in M 83, based on submillimeter imaging spectroscopy from within the central 3.5' (~4 kpc in diameter) around the starburst nucleus. The observations use the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) of the Spectral …
