PICsIT: a position sensitive detector for space applications
Di Cocco, G.; Malaguti, G.; Schiavone, F. +8 more
Pixellated Imaging CsI Telescope (PICsIT) is the high energy detector plane of Imager on Board INTEGRAL Satellite (IBIS), one of the main instruments on board the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) satellite that will be launched in the year 2001. It consists of 4096 CsI(Tl) individual detector elements and operates in the …
Constraints on Cool Gas in Rich Clusters of Galaxies
Miller, Eric D.; Bregman, Joel N.; Knezek, Patricia M.
Cool gas should be present in galaxy clusters due to stripping of galactic gas, in-fall onto the cluster, and from cooling flows. We have searched for this gas through metal resonance absorption lines from low-ionization gas toward six background quasars. Both cooling-flow and non-cooling-flow clusters were observed, with lines of sight ranging fr…
What is the real nature of blinkers?
Erdélyi, R.; Marik, D.
In the present paper a simple physical model of blinkers based on the process of magnetic reconnection is developed. Blinkers were first found in transition region lines (e.g. He I, O III, O IV, O V and Mg IX) by SOHO CDS. Their typical lifetime is approximately 16 min, the intensity enhancement ratios are around 1.8, and they appear at 1-20 s
Analysis and Models of Photoionized Structures Seen in Hubble Space Telescope Images of NGC 7635
Hester, J. Jeff; Scowen, Paul A.; Moore, Brian D. +1 more
We present the analysis of photoionized structures seen in Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images of NGC 7635 and the surrounding H II region S162. We exploit the high spatial resolution images to make a census of the total ionizing flux from the O6.5 IIIf star BD +60°2522. We also construct detailed models of two structures w…
The anomalous ultraviolet light curves and IUE spectra of β Lyrae revisited
Linnell, A. P.
Recent studies of β Lyrae have proposed several possible models to explain the anomalous ultraviolet light curves of that mass-transfer binary system. This paper subjects four proposed models to tests involving a comparison of system synthetic spectra with the observed spectra and a comparison of synthetic light curves, based on synthetic photomet…
Planetary science: Magnetic moments at Jupiter
Hill, Thomas W.
The coming together of two spacecraft near Jupiter provided a unique opportunity to investigate the giant planet's magnetic field -- and the results, collected in this issues, are stunning
Acoustic Power Mapping for Active Regions from MDI, HLH, and TON Data

Very-Large-Array Observations of Evolving Type I Noise Storms and Nonthermal Bursts In Association With Flares And Coronal Mass Ejections
Willson, Robert F.
Very-Large-Array (VLA) observations of the Sun at 20, 91 and 400 cm have been combined with data from the SOHO, TRACE and Wind solar missions to study the properties of long-lasting Type I noise storms and impulsive metric and decimetric bursts during solar flares and associated coronal mass ejections. These radio observations provide information …
Detection of a Vibration-Rotation Emission Line of Hydrogen Deuteride toward Orion Peak 1: Excitation Coupling of HD to H2
Bertoldi, F.; Geballe, T. R.; Timmermann, R. +2 more
The 2.46 µm v=1-0 R(5) line of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) has been detected in the Orion Peak 1 shock emission region, at a surface brightness of (8.5+/-2.1)×10-9Wm-2sr-1 over a 6 arcsec2 area. Comparison of the column density of HD (v=1,J=6) with the column density of HD (v=0,J=6) previous…
A New Database of Observed Spectral Energy Distributions of Nearby Starburst Galaxies from the Ultraviolet to the Far-Infrared
Gordon, Karl D.; Calzetti, Daniela; Clayton, Geoffrey C. +3 more
We present a database of UV-to-FIR data of 83 nearby starburst galaxies. The galaxies are selected based upon the availability of IUE data. We have recalibrated the IUE UV spectra for these galaxies by incorporating the most recent improvements. For 45 of these galaxies we use observations by Storchi-Bergmann et al. and McQuade et al. for the spec…
