Demonstrating the Negligible Contribution of Optical HST ACS Galaxies to Source-subtracted Cosmic Infrared Background Fluctuations in Deep Spitzer IRAC Images
Kashlinsky, A.; Arendt, R. G.; Moseley, S. H. +1 more
We study the possible contribution of optical galaxies detected with the Hubble ACS instrument to the near-IR cosmic infrared (CIB) fluctuations in deep Spitzer images. The Spitzer data used in this analysis are obtained in the course of the GOODS project, from which we select four independent 10'×10' regions observed at both…
Remote sensing of surface pressure on Mars with the Mars Express/OMEGA spectrometer: 2. Meteorological maps
Drossart, Pierre; Vinatier, Sandrine; Gendrin, Aline +7 more
Surface pressure measurements help to achieve a better understanding of the main dynamical phenomena occurring in the atmosphere of a planet. The use of the Mars Express OMEGA visible and near-IR imaging spectrometer allows us to tentatively perform an unprecedented remote sensing measurement of Martian surface pressure. OMEGA reflectances in the …
A multiwavelength map of the nuclear region of NGC 7582
Guainazzi, Matteo; Bianchi, Stefano; Piconcelli, Enrico +1 more
We have performed a detailed analysis of the Chandra and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7582. The dust lane, as mapped by the HST near-infrared and optical images, strongly influences the morphology of the soft X-ray emission, being spatially coincident with excess of X-ray absorption. Two `hotspots', i.e. regions …
On Martian nitrogen dayglow emission observed by SPICAM UV spectrograph/Mars Express
Leblanc, F.; Bertaux, J. L.; Chaufray, J. Y.
SPICAM UV spectrograph on board Mars Express has reported, for the first time, the identification of the N2 VK (0,5) and (0,6) band emissions in the Martian dayglow. The derived exospheric temperature of the N2 species in the upper Martian atmosphere is equal to 190 +/- 51 K for areocentric longitudes between 100° and 171° an…
Integral-field spectroscopy of Centaurus A nucleus
Krajnović, Davor; Thatte, Niranjan; Sharp, Rob
We report integral-field spectroscopic observations with the Cambridge Infrared Panoramic Survey Spectrograph (CIRPASS) mounted on the Gemini South telescope of the nucleus of the nearby galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). We detect two-dimensional distributions of the following emission lines: [PII], [FeII] and Paschen β. We compare our observations w…
Chromospheric Evaporation in a Remote Solar Flare-like Transient Observed at High Time Resolution with SOHO's CDS and RHESSI
Brosius, Jeffrey W.; Holman, Gordon D.
We present EUV light curves and Doppler velocity measurements for a small, remote flarelike transient observed at high time resolution (9.8 s) with SOHO's CDS during a GOES M1.6 solar flare. The EUV observations include a brief precursor and an impulsive peak followed by a more gradual rise and decline of emission. Hard X-ray light curves obtained…
Comparison of Large-Scale Flows on the Sun Measured by Time-Distance Helioseismology and Local Correlation Tracking
Zhao, Junwei; Kosovichev, Alexander G.; Švanda, Michal
We present a direct comparison between two different techniques: time-distance helioseismology and a local correlation tracking method for measuring mass flows in the solar photosphere and in a near-surface layer. We applied both methods to the same dataset (MDI high-cadence Dopplergrams covering almost the entire Carrington rotation 1974) and com…
Extragalactic MeV γ-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies
Kawakatu, N.; Kino, M.; Ito, H.
Strong γ-ray emission from cocoons of young radio galaxies is predicted for the first time. Considering the process of adiabatic injection of the shock dissipation energy and mass of the relativistic jet in active nuclei into the cocoon, while assuming thermalizing electron plasma interactions, we find that the thermal electron temperature of the …
Hinode SP Vector Magnetogram of AR10930 and Its Cross-Comparison with MDI
Moon, Yong-Jae; Shimojo, Masumi; Tsuneta, Saku +17 more
We present one Hinode Spectropolarimeter (SP) magnetogram of AR 10930 that produced several major flares. The inversion from Stokes profiles to magnetic field vectors was made using the standard Milne-Eddington code. We successfully applied the Uniform Shear Method for resolving the 180° ambiguity to the magnetogram. The inversion gave very strong…
The Temporal Evolution of Coronal Loops Observed by GOES SXI
López Fuentes, M. C.; Klimchuk, J. A.; Mandrini, C. H.
We study the temporal evolution of coronal loops using data from the Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI) on board the Geosynchronous Operational Environmental Satellite 12 (GOES-12). This instrument provides continuous soft X-ray observations of the solar corona at a high temporal cadence permitting detailed study of the full lifetime of each of several coro…
