OMEGA/Mars Express: Visual channel performances and data reduction techniques
Gondet, B.; Langevin, Y.; Poulet, F. +4 more
In this paper we discuss the on-ground and in-flight performances of the visual channel of the OMEGA instrument on board the European mission Mars Express. OMEGA is a mapping spectrometer designed for mineralogical and atmospheric investigation of Mars. This work aims to be a guide to future users for the analysis of the OMEGA data. We give a deta…
Evidence for T Tauri-like emission in the EXor V1118 Ori from near-IR and X-ray data
Larionov, V. M.; Arkharov, A. A.; Puccetti, S. +6 more
Aims.We present a near-IR study of the EXor variable V1118 Ori, performed by following a slightly declining phase after a recent outburst. In particular, the near-IR (0.8-2.3 µm) spectrum, obtained for the first time, shows a wide variety of emission features of the H I (Paschen and Brackett series), He I recombination, and CO overtone.

Dwarf elliptical galaxies in Centaurus A group: stellar populations in AM 1339-445 and AM 1343-452
Rejkuba, M.; Da Costa, G. S.; Zoccali, M. +2 more
We study the red giant populations of two dE galaxies, AM 1339-445 and AM 1343-452, with the aim of investigating the number and luminosity of any upper asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars present. The galaxies are members of the Centaurus A group (D ≈ 3.8 Mpc) and are classified as outlying (R ≈ 350 kpc) satellites of Cen A. The analysis is based…
Far-Infrared Excited Hydroxyl Lines from Orion KL Outflows
Cernicharo, José; Viti, Serena; Barlow, Michael J. +6 more
As part of the first far-IR line survey toward Orion KL, we present the detection of seven new rotationally excited OH Λ-doublets (at ~48, ~65, ~71, ~79, ~98, and ~115 µm). Observations were performed with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer Fabry-Pérot on board the Infrared Space Observatory. In total, more than 20 resolved OH rotational lines…
A steep fan at Coprates Catena, Valles Marineris, Mars, as seen by HRSC data
Neukum, G.; Hauber, E.; Reiss, D. +4 more
We investigate a steep fan-like deposit in the Coprates Catena region, using the new High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) data and other Martian data sets. Water flowing in a 45-km-long sapping valley entered a deep trough and formed a stepped fan 1100-m-high above the trough floor with a mean slope of 7.4°. The origin of the fan is uncertain. How…
GRB 050223 : a dark GRB in a dusty starburst galaxy
Cimatti, A.; Le Floc'h, E.; Piro, L. +19 more
Aims.We aim at detecting and determining the properties of the host galaxy of the dark
Methods: .We use VLT optical/NIR images coupled to Swift X-ray positioning, and optical spectra of the host galaxy to measure its properties.
Results: .We find a single galaxy within the Swift error box of
[CII] emission and star formation in the spiral arms of M 31
Braine, J.; Brouillet, N.; Combes, F. +1 more
Context: .The [Cii] 158 µm line is the most important coolant of the interstellar medium in galaxies but substantial variations are seen from object to object. The main source of the emission at a galactic scale is still poorly understood and candidates range from photodissociation regions (PDRs) to the cold neutral or diffuse warm ionized m…
Discovery of a Candidate Central Compact Object in the Galactic Nonthermal SNR G330.2+1.0
Pavlov, George G.; Kargaltsev, Oleg; Hughes, John P. +5 more
We report on the discovery of a pointlike source (CXOU J160103.1-513353) at the center of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G330.2+1.0 with Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The X-ray spectrum fits a blackbody model with kT~0.49 keV, implying a small emission region of R~0.4 km at the distance of 5 kpc. The estimated X-ray luminosity is LX~…
Low Redshift BAL QSOs in the Eigenvector 1 Context
Marziani, P.; Zamanov, R.; Braito, V. +4 more
We attempt to characterize the geometry of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) QSOs by studying a low redshift sample of 12 sources. We find that the majority of these sources are Population A quasars as defined in Sulentic et al. (2000a, broad HbetaFWHM ≤ 4000 km s(-1) ). A possible correlation between terminal velocity and absolute V magnitude suggests …
The XMM-Newton Examination of Energetics in the East Lobe of the Nearby Radio Galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316)
Isobe, N.; Makishima, K.; Tashiro, M. +4 more
An XMM-Newton observation of the east radio lobe of the nearby radio galaxy Fornax A is reported. The diffuse hard X-ray emission associated with the east lobe, which was initially discovered by ASCA and ROSAT, is confirmed with significant signal statistics, after strictly removing 59 sources detected within the MOS field of view. Its X-ray spect…
