An Atlas of Far-Ultraviolet Spectra of Wolf-Rayet Stars from the FUSE Satellite
Walborn, Nolan R.; Sonneborn, George; Hutchings, John B. +5 more
We present an atlas of far-ultraviolet spectra of 21 Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the Galaxy and Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, secured with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite. The data cover the wavelength range of 912-1190 Å at a spectral resolution of 0.1 Å and span examples of most subtypes in the WN and WC sequences. …
Shocks and particle acceleration in supernova remnants: observational features
Vink, Jacco
The last 10 years a number of observational advances have substantially increased our knowledge of shock phenomena in supernova remnants. This progress has mainly been made possible by the recent improvements in X-ray and γ-ray instrumentation. It has become clear that some shell-type supernova remnants, e.g., SN 1006, have X-ray emission dominate…
A second glance at SN 2002ap and the M 74 field with XMM-Newton
Pian, E.; Soria, R.; Mazzali, P. A.
We have re-observed the field of M 74 in January 2003 with XMM-Newton, 11 months after the X-ray detection of SN 2002ap. From a comparison of the two XMM-Newton observations we obtain more accurate values for the X-ray luminosity and colours of the source five days after the event, and a limit on its decline rate. We compare its X-ray behaviour (p…
On the Nature of the Bright Short-Period X-Ray Source in the Circinus Galaxy Field
Wu, Kinwah; Weisskopf, Martin C.; Tennant, Allyn F. +2 more
The spectrum and light curve of the bright X-ray source CG X-1 in the field of the Circinus galaxy are reexamined. Previous analyses have concluded that the source is an accreting black hole of mass >~50 Msolar, although it has been noted that the light curve resembles that of an AM Herculis system. Here we show that the short period…
Hydrogen Lyα Intensity Oscillations Observed by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer
Li, X.; Morgan, H.; Habbal, S. Rifai
We report on a search for significant oscillations in different coronal structures by applying a wavelet analysis to Solar and Heliospheric Observatory UVCS observations of the hydrogen Lyα 1216 Å line intensity taken between 1.5 and 2.2 Rsolar. Significant periodic oscillations, unlikely to be a result of instrumental effects, are show…
Energetic magnetospheric oxygen in the magnetosheath and its response to IMF orientation: Cluster observations
Lundin, R.; Sauvaud, J. -A.; Balogh, A. +17 more
We present Cluster observations made during an outbound orbit on 10 December 2000. After exiting the magnetosphere at midlatitude, Cluster spent a long time skimming the magnetopause moving to lower latitude along an orbit approximately in the ZYGSM plane on the dusk flank of the magnetopause. During this time, magnetospheric oxygen wit…
Influence of wall impacts on the Ulysses dust detector on understanding the interstellar dust flux
Krüger, H.; Grün, E.; Altobelli, N. +2 more
The Ulysses spacecraft orbits the Sun on a highly inclined orbit, and the impact ionization dust detector on board continuously measures interstellar dust grains with masses up to 10-13kg, penetrating deep into the Solar System. The flow direction is close to the mean apex of the Sun's motion through the local interstellar cloud (LIC), …
Wavelet analysis of magnetic turbulence in the Earth's plasma sheet
Balogh, A.; Zhang, T. L.; Nakamura, R. +4 more
Recent studies provide evidence for the multiscale nature of magnetic turbulence in the plasma sheet. Wavelet methods represent modern time series analysis techniques suitable for the description of statistical characteristics of multiscale turbulence. Cluster FGM (fluxgate magnetometer) magnetic field high-resolution (67 Hz) measurements are stud…

First Evidence of Circumstellar Disks around Blue Straggler Stars
De Marco, Orsola; Shara, Michael M.; Zurek, David +2 more
We present an analysis of optical Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and Faint Object Spectrograph spectroscopy of six blue stragglers found in the globular clusters M3, NGC 6752, and NGC 6397. These stars are a subsample of a set of ~50 blue stragglers and stars above the main-sequence turnoff in four globular clusters th…
