The Clustering Behavior of Pre-Main-Sequence Stars in NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Gouliermis, Dimitrios A.; Klessen, Ralf S.; Schmeja, Stefan
We present evidence that the star-forming region NGC 346/N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud is the product of hierarchical star formation, probably from more than one star formation event. We investigate the spatial distribution and clustering behavior of the pre-main-sequence (PMS) stellar population in the region, using data obtained with Hubble …
Robust Determination of the Major Merger Fraction at z = 0.6 in the Groth Strip
Eliche-Moral, M. Carmen; Balcells, Marc; Guzmán, Rafael +6 more
We measure the fraction of galaxies undergoing disk-disk major mergers (f mph m ) at intermediate redshifts (0.35 <= z < 0.85) by studying the asymmetry index A of galaxy images. Results are provided for B- and K s-band absolute magnitude selected samples from the Groth strip in the galaxy origins and young …
Plasma environment of Jupiter family comets
Coates, A. J.; Jones, G. H.
As any comet nears the Sun, gas sublimes from the nucleus taking dust with it. Jupiter family comets are no exception. The neutral gas becomes ionized, and the interaction of a comet with the solar wind starts with ion pickup. This key process is also important in other solar system contexts wherever neutral particles become ionized and injected i…
2MASS 22344161+4041387AB: A Wide, Young, Accreting, Low-Mass Binary in the LkHα233 Group
Shkolnik, Evgenya; Cushing, Michael C.; Dupuy, Trent J. +6 more
We report the discovery of a young, 0farcs16 binary, 2M2234+4041AB, found as the result of a Keck laser guide star adaptive optics imaging survey of young field ultracool dwarfs. Spatially resolved near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy indicate that the luminosity and temperature ratios of the system are near unity. From optical and near-infra…
The Nature of a Cosmic-Ray Accelerator, CTB37B, Observed with Suzaku and Chandra
Ishida, Manabu; Terada, Yukikatsu; Nakajima, Hiroshi +5 more
We report on Suzaku and Chandra observations of the young supernova remnant CTB37B, from which TeV γ-rays were detected by the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope. The 80ks Suzaku observation provided us with a clear image of diffuse emission and high-quality spectra. The spectra revealed that the diffuse emission is comprised of thermal and non-thermal …
Suzaku Observation of HESS J1825-137: Discovery of Largely-Extended X-Rays from PSR J1826-1334
Koyama, Katsuji; Matsumoto, Hironori; Bamba, Aya +2 more
We observed the brightest part of HESS J1825-137 with the Suzaku XIS, and found diffuse X-rays extending at least up to 15' (∼17pc) from the PSR J1826-1334. The spectra have no emission line, and were fitted with an absorbed power-law model. The X-rays, therefore, are likely to be due to synchrotron emission from a pulsar wind nebula. The photon i…
Local Twist and Current Helicity Distributions of Active Region NOAA 10930
Liu, Yu; Su, J. T.; Suematsu, Y. +2 more
Hinode high-quality vector magnetograms and G-band data are utilized to study the distributions of local twist α z and current helicity hc on the active region of NOAA 10930. The new findings are as follows. (1) The patches of positive and negative helicities were intermixed showing a mesh pattern in the umbra and a thread p…
Interaction of Titan's ionosphere with Saturn's magnetosphere

Search for corannulene (C20H10) in the Red Rectangle
Gerin, M.; Giesen, T. F.; Joblin, C. +10 more
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely accepted as the carriers of the Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs), but an unambiguous identification of any specific interstellar PAH is still missing. For polar PAHs, pure rotational transitions can be used as spectral fingerprints for identification. Combining dedicated experiments, detailed simula…
Sorted stone circles in Elysium Planitia, Mars: Implications for recent martian climate
Balme, M. R.; Muller, J. -P.; Gallagher, C. J. +2 more
We have found sorted stone circles and polygons near the equator of Mars, using new 25 cm/pixel NASA HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) images. The sorted circles occur in geologically recent catastrophic flood deposits in the equatorial Elysium Planitia region, and are diagnostic of periglacial processes: sorted polygons do not f…
