Abundances of planetary nebulae NGC 40 and NGC 6153
Pottasch, S. R.; Beintema, D. A.; Feibelman, W. A. +1 more
The ISO and IUE spectra of the elliptical nebulae NGC 40 and NGC 6153 are presented. These spectra are combined with the spectra in the visual wavelength region to obtain a complete, extinction corrected, spectrum. The chemical composition of the nebulae is then calculated and compared to previous determinations. A discussion is given of: (1) the …
Are coronal holes the only source of fast solar wind at solar minimum?
Chen, Y.; Habbal, S. R.; Li, X. +1 more
A two-dimensional (2-D) MHD model of an Alfvén-wave-driven solar wind in the heliospheric meridional plane is presented whereby the consequences of a magnetic field distribution at the Sun that digresses from the standard dipole structure, often used in 2-D MHD models, are explored. The latitudinal distribution of open magnetic flux is specified a…
A deep 6.7 mu m survey in the SSA13 field with ISO
Sanders, D. B.; Kawara, K.; Taniguchi, Y. +8 more
We present results of a deep mid-infrared survey in the SSA13 field with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). In order to probe the near-infrared light at high redshifts, we surveyed the field with the broad band LW2 (5-8.5 mu m) filter of the mid-infrared camera ISOCAM. Adopting a highly redundant imaging strategy for the 23 h observation and ca…
Dusty ERO Search behind Two Massive Clusters
Ohyama, Youichi; Kawabata, Koji S.; Yoshida, Michitoshi +15 more
We performed deep K'-band imaging observations of 2 massive clusters, MS 0451.6 - 0305 at z = 0.55 and MS 0440.5 + 0204 at z = 0.19, for searching counterparts of the faint sub-mm sources behind these clusters, which would provide one of the deepest extremely red object (ERO) samples. Comparing our near-infrared images with optical images taken by…
FUSE and HST ultraviolet observations of the disc wind of RW Sextantis
Knigge, C.; Prinja, R. K.; Long, K. S. +4 more
We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite time-series data of the low-inclination, nova-like cataclysmic variable RW Sex. The data span the wavelength range between ~905 and 1188Å, which contains the resonance lines of CIII, NIII, SIV, PV, SVI and OVI. All these spectral lines are present in the form of blueshifted absorpt…
Star Formation History and Other Properties of the Northern Hubble Deep Field
Thompson, Rodger I.
The original analysis of the star formation history in the NICMOS deep images of the northern Hubble Deep Field (NHDF) is extended to the entire NHDF utilizing NICMOS and WFPC2 archival data. The roughly constant star formation rate from redshifts 1-6 found in this study is consistent with the original results. Star formation rates from this study…
Are CME ``interactions'' really important for accelerating major solar energetic particle events?
Szabo, Adam; Richardson, Ian G.; Haggerty, Dennis K. +2 more
Recent studies have proposed that the presence or absence of an ``interaction'' with a preceding coronal mass ejection (CME) or other coronal structure within ~50 Rs of the Sun discriminates large, fast CMEs associated with major solar energetic particle (SEP) events from those that are not. We conclude that there is no compelling evide…
Spatial Separation of the 3.29 Micron Emission Feature and Associated 2 Micron Continuum in NGC 7023
Sellgren, K.; An, Jin H.
We present a new 0.9" resolution 3.29 µm narrowband image of the reflection nebula NGC 7023. We find that the 3.29 µm infrared emission feature (IEF) in NGC 7023 is brightest in narrow filaments northwest of the illuminating star HD 200775. These filaments have been previously seen in images of extended red emission, K', near-infrared …
Interaction and Dynamics of the Photospheric Network Magnetic Elements
Tarbell, T. D.; Shine, R.; Ryutova, M.
Small-scale magnetic elements in the quiet photospheric network are believed to play a key role in the energy flow from the solar surface to upper layers of atmosphere. Their intense hydro-magnetic activity includes merging and fragmentation of same polarity fluxes, `total' or partial cancellation of neighboring flux elements of opposite polarity,…
Determination of the solar wind slowdown near solar maximum
Wang, C.; Richardson, J. D.
The magnitude of the solar wind speed decrease from the inner to the outer heliosphere provides important information about the interaction of the heliosphere with the local interstellar medium (LISM), leading to better estimates of the size and shape of the heliosphere and of the LISM density. In this study we combine observations from multiple s…
