The UV and X-ray activity of the M dwarfs within 10 pc of the Sun
DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stt225 Bibcode: 2013MNRAS.431.2063S

Liefke, C.; Micela, G.; Marino, A. +2 more

M dwarfs are the most numerous stars in the Galaxy. They are characterized by strong magnetic activity. The ensuing high-energy emission is crucial for the evolution of their planets and the eventual presence of life on them. We systematically study the X-ray and ultraviolet emission of a subsample of M dwarfs from a recent proper-motion survey, s…

New constraints on coupled dark energy from the Planck satellite experiment
DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.88.023531 Bibcode: 2013PhRvD..88b3531S

Mena, Olga; Salvatelli, Valentina; Marchini, Andrea +1 more

We present new constraints on coupled dark energy from the recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies from the Planck satellite mission. We found that a coupled dark energy model is fully compatible with the Planck measurements, deriving a weak bound on the dark matter-dark energy coupling parameter ξ=-0.49-0.31

Evolution of the Sizes of Galaxies over 7 < z < 12 Revealed by the 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field Campaign
DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/777/2/155 Bibcode: 2013ApJ...777..155O

Ono, Yoshiaki; Ouchi, Masami; Koekemoer, Anton M. +14 more

We analyze the redshift- and luminosity-dependent sizes of dropout galaxy candidates in the redshift range z ~ 7-12 using deep images from the 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF12) campaign, which offers two advantages over that used in earlier work. First, we utilize the increased signal-to-noise ratio offered by the UDF12 imaging to provide impro…

Far-infrared Fine-structure Line Diagnostics of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/776/1/38 Bibcode: 2013ApJ...776...38F

Clements, D. L.; Cooray, A.; Farrah, D. +16 more

We present Herschel observations of 6 fine-structure lines in 25 ultraluminous infrared galaxies at z < 0.27. The lines, [O III]52 µm, [N III]57 µm, [O I]63 µm, [N II]122 µm, [O I]145 µm, and [C II]158 µm, are mostly single Gaussians with widths <600 km s-1 and luminosities of 107-10<…

Formation and evolution of interstellar filaments. Hints from velocity dispersion measurements
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/201220822 Bibcode: 2013A&A...553A.119A

André, Ph.; Arzoumanian, D.; Könyves, V. +1 more

We investigate the gas velocity dispersions of a sample of filaments recently detected as part of the Herschel Gould Belt Survey in the IC 5146, Aquila, and Polaris interstellar clouds. To measure these velocity dispersions, we use 13CO, C18O, and N2H+ line observations obtained with the IRAM 30 m telesc…

The redshift and mass dependence on the formation of the Hubble sequence at z > 1 from CANDELS/UDS
DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stt793 Bibcode: 2013MNRAS.433.1185M

Grogin, Norman A.; Kocevski, Dale D.; Koekemoer, Anton M. +16 more

In this paper we present a detailed study of the structures and morphologies of a sample of 1188 massive galaxies with M* ≥ 1010 M between redshifts z = 1 and 3 within the Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) region of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) field. Using this sample we dete…

Enhanced Magnetic Compressibility and Isotropic Scale Invariance at Sub-ion Larmor Scales in Solar Wind Turbulence
DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/763/1/10 Bibcode: 2013ApJ...763...10K

The anisotropic nature of solar wind magnetic turbulence fluctuations is investigated scale by scale using high cadence in situ magnetic field measurements from the Cluster and ACE spacecraft missions. The data span five decades in scales from the inertial range to the electron Larmor radius. In contrast to the inertial range, there is a successiv…

The Nearest Millisecond Pulsar Revisited with XMM-Newton: Improved Mass-radius Constraints for PSR J0437-4715
DOI: 10.1088/0004-637X/762/2/96 Bibcode: 2013ApJ...762...96B

Bogdanov, Slavko

I present an analysis of the deepest X-ray exposure of a radio millisecond pulsar (MSP) to date, an X-ray Multi Mirror-Newton European Photon Imaging Camera spectroscopic and timing observation of the nearest known MSP, PSR J0437-4715. The timing data clearly reveal a secondary broad X-ray pulse offset from the main pulse by ~0.55 in rotational ph…

The Herschel census of infrared SEDs through cosmic time
DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stt330 Bibcode: 2013MNRAS.431.2317S

Berta, S.; Magnelli, B.; Nordon, R. +57 more

Using Herschel data from the deepest SPIRE and PACS surveys (HerMES and PEP) in COSMOS, GOODS-S and GOODS-N, we examine the dust properties of infrared (IR)-luminous (LIR > 1010 L) galaxies at 0.1 < z < 2 and determine how these evolve with cosmic time. The unique angle of this work is the rigorous analys…

The sub-mJy radio sky in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South: source population
DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stt1879 Bibcode: 2013MNRAS.436.3759B

Tozzi, P.; Mainieri, V.; Rosati, P. +5 more

The sub-mJy radio population is a mixture of active systems, that is star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We study a sample of 883 radio sources detected at 1.4 GHz in a deep Very Large Array survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South that reaches a best rms sensitivity of 6 µJy. We have used a simple scheme t…
