Probing the Distinct Extinction Law of the Pillars of Creation in M16 with JWST
Gao, Jian; Chen, Xi; Jiang, Biwei +2 more
Investigating the extinction law in regions of high dust extinction, such as the Pillars of Creation within the M16 region, is crucial for understanding the densest parts of the interstellar medium (ISM). In this study, we utilize observations from the Near-Infrared Camera and the Mid-Infrared Instrument onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWS…
The Reliability of Accretion Disk Inclination Derived from X-Ray Spectroscopy of Active Galaxies
Ho, Luis C.; Li, Ruancun; Ding, Yuanze +1 more
The inclination angle of substructures in active galaxies gives insights into physical components from scales of the vicinity of the central black hole to the entire host galaxy. We use the self-consistent reflection spectral model RELXILL to measure the inclination of the inner region of accretion disks with broadband (0.3–78 keV) X-ray observati…
Eridanus III and DELVE 1: Carbon-rich Primordial Star Clusters or the Smallest Dwarf Galaxies?
Cerny, William; Li, Ting S.; Hansen, Terese T. +8 more
We present spectroscopy of the ultra-faint Milky Way satellites Eridanus III (Eri III) and DELVE 1. We identify eight member stars in each satellite and place nonconstraining upper limits on their velocity and metallicity dispersions. The brightest star in each object is very metal poor, at [Fe/H] = ‑3.1 for Eri III and [Fe/H] = ‑2.8 for DELVE 1. …
First Direct Evidence for Keplerian Rotation in Quasar Inner Broad-line Regions
Kaspi, S.; Muñoz, J. A.; Mediavilla, E. +4 more
We introduce a novel method to derive rotation curves with light-day spatial resolution of the inner regions of lensed quasars. We aim to probe the kinematics of the inner part of the broad-line region by resolving the microlensing response—a proxy for the size of the emitting region—in the wings of the broad emission lines. Specifically, we asses…
An Analysis of Active Galactic Nucleus–driven Outflows in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 3227
Fischer, Travis C.; Riffel, Rogemar A.; Crenshaw, D. Michael +8 more
We have characterized the ionized, neutral, and warm molecular gas kinematics in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3227 using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, Apache Point Observatory's Kitt Peak Ohio State Multi-Object Spectrograph, Gemini-North's Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer, and the Atacama …
Connecting Lyα and Ionizing Photon Escape in the Sunburst Arc
Hutchison, Taylor A.; Mahler, Guillaume; Chisholm, John +17 more
We investigate the Lyα and Lyman continuum (LyC) properties of the Sunburst Arc, a z = 2.37 gravitationally lensed galaxy with a multiply imaged, compact region leaking LyC and a triple-peaked Lyα profile indicating direct Lyα escape. Non-LyC-leaking regions show a redshifted Lyα peak, a redshifted and central Lyα peak, or a triple-peaked Lyα prof…
Filter Design for Estimation of Stellar Metallicity: Insights from Experiments with Gaia XP Spectra
Xiang, Maosheng; Huang, Yang; Liu, Jifeng +11 more
We search for an optimal filter design for the estimation of stellar metallicity, based on synthetic photometry from Gaia XP spectra convolved with a series of filter-transmission curves defined by different central wavelengths and bandwidths. Unlike previous designs based solely on maximizing metallicity sensitivity, we find that the optimal solu…
Constraining Free–Free Emission and Photoevaporative Mass-loss Rates for Known Proplyds and New VLA–identified Candidate Proplyds in NGC 1977
Eisner, Josh A.; Boyden, Ryan D.
We present NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations covering the NGC 1977 region at 3.0, 6.4, and 15.0 GHz. We search for compact radio sources and detect continuum emission from 34 NGC 1977 cluster members and 37 background objects. Of the 34 radio-detected cluster members, 3 are associated with known proplyds in NGC 1977, 22 are associ…
Spin–Orbit Alignment of Early-type Astrometric Binaries and the Origin of Slow Rotators
Kratter, Kaitlin M.; Moe, Maxwell; Smith, Chase L.
The spin–orbit alignment of binary stars traces their formation and accretion history. Previous studies of spin–orbit alignment have been limited to small samples, slowly rotating solar-type stars, and/or wide visual binaries that not surprisingly manifest random spin–orbit orientations. We analyze 917 Gaia astrometric binaries across periods P = …
Investigating Mass Segregation of the Binary Stars in the Open Cluster NGC 6819
von Hippel, Ted; Motherway, Erin; Geller, Aaron M. +2 more
We search for mass segregation in the intermediate-aged open cluster NGC 6819 within a carefully identified sample of probable cluster members. Using photometry from Gaia, Pan-STARRS, and the Two Micron All Sky Survey as inputs for a Bayesian statistics software suite, BASE-9, we identify a rich population of (photometric) binaries and derive post…
