KMOS3D Reveals Low-level Star Formation Activity in Massive Quiescent Galaxies at 0.7 < z < 2.7
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa70e5 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...841L...6B

We explore the Hα emission in the massive quiescent galaxies observed by the KMOS3D survey at 0.7 < z < 2.7. The Hα line is robustly detected in 20 out of 120 UVJ-selected quiescent galaxies, and we classify the emission mechanism using the Hα line width and the [N II]/Hα line ratio. We find that AGNs are likely to be responsible …

Evidence for Dynamically Driven Formation of the GW170817 Neutron Star Binary in NGC 4993
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa9660 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...849L..34P

Benoit-Lévy, A.; Bechtol, K.; Smith, M. +89 more

We present a study of NGC 4993, the host galaxy of the GW170817 gravitational-wave event, the GRB 170817A short gamma-ray burst (sGRB), and the AT 2017gfo kilonova. We use Dark Energy Camera imaging, AAT spectra, and publicly available data, relating our findings to binary neutron star (BNS) formation scenarios and merger delay timescales. NGC 499…

Probing the Hot X-Ray Corona around the Massive Spiral Galaxy, NGC 6753, Using Deep XMM-Newton Observations
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa9523 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...850...98B

Vogelsberger, Mark; Springel, Volker; Hernquist, Lars +4 more

X-ray emitting gaseous coronae around massive galaxies are a basic prediction of galaxy formation models. Although the coronae around spiral galaxies offer a fundamental test of these models, observational constraints on their characteristics are still scarce. While the presence of extended hot coronae has been established around a handful of mass…

Disk Masses for Embedded Class I Protostars in the Taurus Molecular Cloud
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa9990 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...851...45S

Sheehan, Patrick D.; Eisner, Josh A.

Class I protostars are thought to represent an early stage in the lifetime of protoplanetary disks, when they are still embedded in their natal envelope. Here we measure the disk masses of 10 Class I protostars in the Taurus Molecular Cloud to constrain the initial mass budget for forming planets in disks. We use radiative transfer modeling to pro…

The Lyman Continuum Escape Fraction of Emission Line-selected z ∼ 2.5 Galaxies Is Less Than 15%
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa733b Bibcode: 2017ApJ...841L..27R

Koekemoer, Anton M.; Teplitz, Harry I.; Rutkowski, Michael J. +9 more

Recent work suggests that strong emission line, star-forming galaxies (SFGs) may be significant Lyman continuum leakers. We combine archival Hubble Space Telescope broadband ultraviolet and optical imaging (F275W and F606W, respectively) with emission line catalogs derived from WFC3 IR G141 grism spectroscopy to search for escaping Lyman continuum…

Discovery of a Kiloparsec Extended Hard X-Ray Continuum and Fe-Kα from the Compton Thick AGN ESO 428-G014
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa7551 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...842L...4F

Elvis, M.; Fabbiano, G.; Raymond, J. +5 more

We report the discovery of kiloparsec-scale diffuse emission in both the hard continuum (3-6 keV) and in the Fe-Kα line in the Compton thick (CT) Seyfert galaxy ESO 428-G014. This extended hard component contains at least ∼24% of the observed 3-8 keV emission, and follows the direction of the extended optical line emission (ionization cone) and ra…

Predicting the Presence of Companions for Stripped-envelope Supernovae: The Case of the Broad-lined Type Ic SN 2002ap
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa7467 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...842..125Z

Fox, O. D.; Smith, N.; Filippenko, A. V. +10 more

Many young, massive stars are found in close binaries. Using population synthesis simulations we predict the likelihood of a companion star being present when these massive stars end their lives as core-collapse supernovae (SNe). We focus on stripped-envelope SNe, whose progenitors have lost their outer hydrogen and possibly helium layers before e…

Whimper of a Bang: Documenting the Final Days of the Nearby Type Ia Supernova 2011fe
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa6eab Bibcode: 2017ApJ...841...48S

Garnavich, P. M.; Kochanek, C. S.; Stanek, K. Z. +1 more

Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Large Binocular Telescope, we followed the evolution of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2011fe for an unprecedented 1840 days past B-band maximum light and over a factor of 7 million in flux. At 1840 days, the 4000-17000 Å quasi-bolometric luminosity is just (420+/- 20) {L}. By measuring th…

A Comparison of Cosmological Parameters Determined from CMB Temperature Power Spectra from the South Pole Telescope and the Planck Satellite
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa947b Bibcode: 2017ApJ...850..101A

Bleem, L. E.; Stark, A. A.; George, E. M. +42 more

The Planck cosmic microwave background temperature data are best fit with a ΛCDM model that mildly contradicts constraints from other cosmological probes. The South Pole Telescope (SPT) 2540 {\deg }2 SPT-SZ survey offers measurements on sub-degree angular scales (multipoles 650≤slant {\ell }≤slant 2500) with sufficient precision to use …

On the Stellar Masses of Giant Clumps in Distant Star-forming Galaxies
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa5d52 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...836L..22D

Schaerer, Daniel; Cava, Antonio; Mayer, Lucio +2 more

We analyze stellar masses of clumps drawn from a compilation of star-forming galaxies at 1.1 < z < 3.6. Comparing clumps selected in different ways, and in lensed or blank field galaxies, we examine the effects of spatial resolution and sensitivity on the inferred stellar masses. Large differences are found, with median stellar masses rangin…
