An ALMA Survey of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey UKIDSS/UDS Field: Identifying Candidate z ∼ 4.5 [C II] Emitters
Thomson, A. P.; Scott, D.; Smail, Ian +18 more
We report the results of a search for serendipitous [C II] 157.74 µm emitters at z ≃ 4.4-4.7 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The search exploits the AS2UDS continuum survey, which covers ∼50 arcmin2 of the sky toward 695 luminous (S 870 ≳ 1 mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), selected from…
A New Test of Copper and Zinc Abundances in Late-type Stars Using Ultraviolet Cu II and Zn II Lines
Roederer, Ian U.; Barklem, Paul S.
We present new abundances derived from Cu I, Cu II, Zn I, and Zn II lines in six warm (5766 ≤ {T}eff} ≤ 6427 K), metal-poor (-2.50 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ -0.95) dwarf and subgiant (3.64 ≤ log g ≤ 4.44) stars. These abundances are derived from archival high-resolution ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hub…
A Non-thermal Pulsed X-Ray Emission of AR Scorpii
Cheng, K. S.; Takata, J.; Kong, A. K. H. +5 more
We report the analysis result of UV/X-ray emission from AR Scorpii, which is an intermediate polar (IP) composed of a magnetic white dwarf and an M-type star, with the XMM-Newton data. The X-ray/UV emission clearly shows a large variation over the orbit, and their intensity maximum (or minimum) is located at the superior conjunction (or inferior c…
The MASSIVE Survey. IX. Photometric Analysis of 35 High-mass Early-type Galaxies with HST WFC3/IR
Ma, Chung-Pei; Greene, Jenny E.; Blakeslee, John P. +3 more
We present near-infrared observations of 35 of the most massive early-type galaxies in the local universe. The observations were made using the infrared channel of the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) in the F110W (1.1 µm) filter. We measured surface brightness profiles and elliptical isophotal fit parameters from the nuclea…
Galaxy Mergers up to Z < 2.5. I. The Star Formation Properties of Merging Galaxies at Separations of 3-15 kpc
Brammer, Gabriel; Marchesini, Danilo; Tadaki, Ken-ichi +7 more
We present a study of the influence of galaxy mergers on star formation at 0.3 < z < 2.5. Major mergers are selected from the CANDELS/3D-HST catalog using a peak-finding algorithm. Mergers have projected galaxy nucleus separation of their members between 3 and 15 kpc. We compare the star formation activity in merging and nonmerging galaxies …
Suzaku Observations of Heavily Obscured (Compton-thick) Active Galactic Nuclei Selected by the Swift/BAT Hard X-Ray Survey
Tanimoto, Atsushi; Ueda, Yoshihiro; Kawamuro, Taiki +3 more
We present a uniform broadband X-ray (0.5-100.0 keV) spectral analysis of 12 Swift/Burst Alert Telescope selected Compton-thick ({log}{N}{{H}}/{{cm}}-2≥slant 24) active galactic nuclei (CTAGNs) observed with Suzaku. The Suzaku data of three objects are published here for the first time. We fit the Suzaku and Swift spectra wit…
Gaia DR1 Evidence of Disrupting the Perseus Arm
Grand, Robert J. J.; Matsunaga, Noriyuki; Kawata, Daisuke +2 more
We have discovered a clear sign of the disruption phase of the Perseus arm in the Milky Way using Cepheid variables, taking advantage of the accurately measured distances of Cepheids and the proper motions from Gaia Data Release 1. Both the Galactocentric radial and rotation velocities of 77 Cepheids within 1.5 kpc of the Perseus arm are correlate…
The Number Density Evolution of Extreme Emission Line Galaxies in 3D-HST: Results from a Novel Automated Line Search Technique for Slitless Spectroscopy
Maseda, Michael V.; Franx, Marijn; van der Wel, Arjen +6 more
The multiplexing capability of slitless spectroscopy is a powerful asset in creating large spectroscopic data sets, but issues such as spectral confusion make the interpretation of the data challenging. Here we present a new method to search for emission lines in the slitless spectroscopic data from the 3D-HST survey utilizing the Wide-Field Camer…
Bipolar Ionization Cones in the Extended Narrow-line Region of Nearby QSO2s
Colina, L.; Elvis, M.; Storchi-Bergmann, T. +8 more
We have used narrowband [O III] λλ4959, 5007 and Hα+[N II] λλ6548, 84 Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of nine luminous (L[O III] > 1042 erg s-1) type 2 QSOs with redshifts 0.1 < z < 0.5 in order to constrain the geometry of their extended narrow-line regions (ENLRs), as recent ground-based studies suggest that th…
CLUMP-3D: Three-dimensional Shape and Structure of 20 CLASH Galaxy Clusters from Combined Weak and Strong Lensing
Zitrin, Adi; Umetsu, Keiichi; Meneghetti, Massimo +5 more
We perform a three-dimensional triaxial analysis of 16 X-ray regular and 4 high-magnification galaxy clusters selected from the CLASH survey by combining two-dimensional weak-lensing and central strong-lensing constraints. In a Bayesian framework, we constrain the intrinsic structure and geometry of each individual cluster assuming a triaxial Nava…
