The Broadband Counterpart of the Short GRB 200522A at z = 0.5536: A Luminous Kilonova or a Collimated Outflow with a Reverse Shock?
Berger, E.; Cucchiara, A.; Dong, Y. +20 more
We present the discovery of the radio afterglow and near-infrared (NIR) counterpart of the Swift short gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 200522A, located at a small projected offset of ≈1 kpc from the center of a young, star-forming host galaxy at z = 0.5536. The radio and X-ray luminosities of the afterglow are consistent with those of on-axis cosmologic…
On the Three-dimensional Structure of Local Molecular Clouds
Koch, Eric W.; Alves, João; Speagle, Joshua S. +9 more
We leverage the 1 pc spatial resolution of the Leike et al. three-dimensional (3D) dust map to characterize the 3D structure of nearby molecular clouds (d ≲ 400 pc). We start by "skeletonizing" the clouds in 3D volume density space to determine their "spines," which we project on the sky to constrain cloud distances with ≈1% uncertainty. For each …
Probabilistic Association of Transients to their Hosts (PATH)
Prochaska, J. Xavier; Deller, Adam T.; Tendulkar, Shriharsh P. +4 more
We introduce a new method to estimate the probability that an extragalactic transient source is associated with a candidate host galaxy. This approach relies solely on simple observables: sky coordinates and their uncertainties, galaxy fluxes, and angular sizes. The formalism invokes Bayes' rule to calculate the posterior probability $P\left({O}_{…
Early-time Light Curves of Type Ia Supernovae Observed with TESS
Pál, András; Kochanek, C. S.; Latham, David W. +19 more
We present the early-time light curves of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed in the first six sectors of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. Ten of these SNe were discovered by ASAS-SN, seven by ATLAS, six by ZTF, and one by Gaia. For nine of these objects with sufficient dynamic range (>3.0 mag from detection to peak), we fit …
The Metallicity Dependence of the High-mass X-Ray Binary Luminosity Function
Williams, Benjamin F.; Zezas, Andreas; Basu-Zych, Antara +7 more
In this work, we present detailed constraints on the metallicity dependence of the high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) X-ray luminosity function (XLF). We analyze ≈5 Ms of Chandra data for 55 actively star-forming galaxies at D ≲ 30 Mpc, with gas-phase metallicities spanning $12+\mathrm{log}({\rm{O}}/{\rm{H}})$ ≈ 7-9.2. Within the galactic footprints, o…
A New Window into Planet Formation and Migration: Refractory-to-Volatile Elemental Ratios in Ultra-hot Jupiters
Gibson, Neale P.; Sing, David K.; Wilson, Jamie +3 more
A primary goal of exoplanet characterization is to use a planet's current composition to understand how that planet formed. For example, the C/O ratio has long been recognized as carrying important information on the chemistry of volatile species. Refractory elements, like Fe, Mg, and Si, are usually not considered in this conversation because the…
Mapping Obscuration to Reionization with ALMA (MORA): 2 mm Efficiently Selects the Highest-redshift Obscured Galaxies
Finkelstein, Steven L.; Casey, Caitlin M.; Long, Arianna S. +24 more
We present the characteristics of 2 mm selected sources from the largest Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) blank-field contiguous survey conducted to date, the Mapping Obscuration to Reionization with ALMA (MORA) survey covering 184 arcmin2 at 2 mm. Twelve of 13 detections above 5σ are attributed to emission from galax…
A Family Tree of Optical Transients from Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxies
Duev, Dmitry A.; Rusholme, Ben; Stern, Daniel +18 more
The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has discovered five events (0.01 < z < 0.4) belonging to an emerging class of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) undergoing smooth, large-amplitude, and rapidly rising flares. This sample consists of several transients initially classified as supernovae with narrow spectral lines. However, upon closer inspectio…
Estimate on Dust Scale Height from the ALMA Dust Continuum Image of the HD 163296 Protoplanetary Disk
Kataoka, Akimasa; Doi, Kiyoaki
We aim at estimating the dust scale height of protoplanetary disks from millimeter continuum observations. First, we present a general expression of intensity of a ring in a protoplanetary disk and show that we can constrain the dust scale height by the azimuthal intensity variation. Then, we apply the presented methodology to the two distinct rin…
Evolution of Solar Wind Turbulence from 0.1 to 1 au during the First Parker Solar Probe-Solar Orbiter Radial Alignment
Telloni, Daniele; Zank, Gary P.; Adhikari, Laxman +41 more
The first radial alignment between Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter spacecraft is used to investigate the evolution of solar wind turbulence in the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, two 1.5 hr intervals are tentatively identified as providing measurements of the same plasma parcels traveling from 0.1 to 1 au. Using magnetic fi…
