A Multi-wavelength Investigation of RCW175: An H II Region Harboring Spinning Dust Emission
Alves, M. I. R.; Davies, R. D.; Davis, R. J. +13 more
Using infrared, radio continuum, and spectral observations, we performed a detailed investigation of the H II region RCW175. We determined that RCW175, which actually consists of two separate H II regions, G29.1-0.7 and G29.0-0.6, is located at a distance of 3.2 ± 0.2 kpc. Based on the observations we infer that the more compact G29.0-0.6 is less …
A Broadband Study of the Emission from the Composite Supernova Remnant MSH 11-62
Gelfand, Joseph D.; Temim, Tea; Hughes, John P. +10 more
MSH 11-62 (G291.0-0.1) is a composite supernova remnant for which radio and X-ray observations have identified the remnant shell as well as its central pulsar wind nebula. The observations suggest a relatively young system expanding into a low-density region. Here, we present a study of MSH 11-62 using observations with the Chandra, XMM -Newton, a…
Moderate-luminosity Growing Black Holes from 1.25 < z < 2.7: Varied Accretion in Disk-dominated Hosts
Urry, C. M.; Simmons, B. D.; Schawinski, K. +2 more
We compute black hole masses and bolometric luminosities for 57 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the redshift range 1.25 <= z <= 2.67, selected from the GOODS-South deep multi-wavelength survey field via their X-ray emission. We determine host galaxy morphological parameters by separating the galaxies from their central point sources in deep…
The Evolution of the Rest-frame V-band Luminosity Function from z = 4: A Constant Faint-end Slope over the Last 12 Gyr of Cosmic History
Marchesini, Danilo; Stefanon, Mauro; Whitaker, Katherine E. +1 more
We present the rest-frame V-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies at 0.4 <= z < 4.0, measured from a near-infrared selected sample constructed from the NMBS, the FIRES, the FIREWORKS, and the ultra-deep NICMOS and WFC3 observations in the HDFN, HUDF, and GOODS-CDFS, all having high-quality optical-to-mid-infrared data. This unique sample…
Evolution and Hydrodynamics of the Very Broad X-Ray Line Emission in SN 1987A
Haberl, F.; Sturm, R.; Dwarkadas, V. V. +2 more
Observations of SN 1987A by the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) in 1999 and the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) in 2003 show very broad (v-b) lines with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of order 104 km s-1 at these times the blast wave (BW) was primarily interacting with the H II region aro…
The A2667 Giant Arc at z = 1.03: Evidence for Large-Scale Shocks at High Redshift
Swinbank, A. M.; Richard, J.; Yuan, T. -T. +1 more
We present the spatially resolved emission line ratio properties of a ~1010 M ⊙ star-forming galaxy at redshift z = 1.03. This galaxy is gravitationally lensed as a triple-image giant arc behind the massive lensing cluster A2667. The main image of the galaxy has magnification factors of 14 ± 2.1 in flux and ~2 × 7 in area, yi…
CANDELS: Correlations of Spectral Energy Distributions and Morphologies with Star formation Status for Massive Galaxies at z ~ 2
Ferguson, Henry C.; Hathi, Nimish P.; Lucas, Ray A. +17 more
We present a study on spectral energy distributions, morphologies, and star formation for an IRAC-selected extremely red object sample in the GOODS Chandra Deep Field-South. This work was enabled by new HST/WFC3 near-IR imaging from the CANDELS survey as well as the deepest available X-ray data from Chandra 4 Ms observations. This sample consists …
High-resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy of the Galactic Supernova Remnant Puppis A with XMM-Newton/RGS
Katsuda, Satoru; Petre, Robert; Uchida, Hiroyuki +6 more
We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of cloud-shock interaction regions in the eastern and northern rims of the Galactic supernova remnant Puppis A, using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on board the XMM-Newton satellite. A number of emission lines including Kα triplets of He-like N, O, and Ne are clearly resolved for the first time. Inten…
Buildup and Release of Magnetic Twist during the X3.4 Solar Flare of 2006 December 13
Choe, G. S.; Shiota, D.; Inoue, S. +3 more
We analyze the temporal evolution of the three-dimensional magnetic structure of the flaring active region (AR) NOAA 10930 by using the nonlinear force-free fields extrapolated from the photospheric vector magnetic fields observed by the Solar Optical Telescope on board Hinode. This AR consisted mainly of two types of twisted magnetic field lines:…
A Study of Heating and Cooling of the ISM in NGC 1097 with Herschel-PACS and Spitzer-IRS
Helou, G.; Roussel, H.; Murphy, E. J. +38 more
NGC 1097 is a nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy with a bright circumnuclear starburst ring, a strong large-scale bar, and an active nucleus. We present a detailed study of the spatial variation of the far-infrared (FIR) [C II]158 µm and [O I]63 µm lines and mid-infrared H2 emission lines as tracers of gas cooling, and of the polycycli…
