Soft X-Ray Excess from Shocked Black Hole Accretion
Fukumura, Keigo; Przybylek, Jeff
A certain class of luminous galaxies hosting supermassive black holes (BHs) is known to exhibit an excess of "soft X-rays" in their X-ray spectra. However, its physical identity and origin are yet to be understood. In this work, we systematically study a sample of 9 well-documented narrow-line Seyfert 1 active galactic nuclei by utilizing the arch…
X-Ray and Optical Observations of the Young M Dwarf Dipper Star TIC 234284556
Montet, Benjamin T.; Feinstein, Adina D.; Poppenhaeger, Katja +2 more
We observed TIC 234284556 in X-rays and in the optical with XMM-Newton to study the recurring dip previously seen in TESS observations. The dip did not appear during our observation. We detect X-ray flares and anti-correlated rotational modulation in X-rays and in the optical.
X-Ray and Ultraviolet Observations of the Eclipsing Binary V471 Tauri with XMM-Newton: X-Ray-Cycles, Eclipse Timings and Further Evidence of a Substellar Tertiary Companion
Guinan, Edward; Engle, Scott; Ribas, Ignasi +2 more
Few stars offer as much toward understanding fundamental aspects of stellar astrophysics and binary star evolution than the eclipsing binary V471 Tauri (DAZ+K2V; P = 12.52 hr). V471 Tauri (Tau) is the product of common-envelope binary evolution and a pre-cataclysmic variable. X-ray and UV (291 nm) observations were secured with XMM-Newton over ~ 6…
Catalog of X-Ray Detected Be Stars (XDBS)
Kargaltsev, Oleg; Yang, Hui; Hare, Jeremy +2 more
We present a catalog of X-ray Detected Be Stars (XDBS) with 161 Be stars from the Be Star Spectra (BeSS) database having X-ray counterparts in the Chandra Source Catalog v2.0, XMM-Newton 4XMM-DR11 Catalog, or Swift 2SXPS Catalog. The multi-wavelength catalog includes accurate optical positions, X-ray properties (fluxes, photon indices and hardness…
Multiwavelength Properties of the Newly Discovered Dwarf Nova ASASSN-21kt
Sokolovsky, Kirill V.; Mukai, Koji; Lopes de Oliveira, Raimundo +1 more
We report on archival XMM-Newton and post-outburst Swift observations of the newly discovered dwarf nova ASASSN-21kt. Its pre-outburst X-ray emission is consistent with that of a collisionally ionized, thermal plasma with ${kT}={8.1}_{-2.5}^{+10.2}$ keV and LX 0.2-12 keV = 7 × 1032 erg s-1, with no clear modulation…
Prospects for the In Situ detection of Comet C/2019 Y4 ATLAS by Solar Orbiter
Afghan, Qasim; Jones, Geraint H.; Price, Oliver
The European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft will pass approximately downstream of the position of comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) in late May and early June 2020. We predict that the spacecraft may encounter the comet's ion tail around 2020 May 31—June 1, and that the comet's dust tail may be crossed on 2020 June 6. We outline the solar wind feat…
Non-detection of M60-UCD1 in Quasi-simultaneous X-Ray and Radio Observations
Jonker, Peter G.; Lena, Davide; Miller-Jones, James C. A. +1 more
Simultaneous detection in X-rays and radio, following the proportionality implied by the "fundamental plane of black hole activity," can indicate the presence of an accreting black hole (BH), allowing a rough estimate of its mass. We used the XMM-Newton satellite and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to perform quasi-simultaneous observations (w…
