X-ray astronomy in its thirtieth year.
Pounds, K. A.
An overview is given of current activities and future prospects in the X-ray astronomy field with attention given to the British involvement in the Ginga, Rosat, and Exosat projects. The large array of proportional counter detectors for the Ginga astronomy satellite is described in detail with respect to studying time variability. The Rosat X-ray-…
The UK contribution to observations of Comet Halley
Cowley, S. W. H.; Green, S. F.; Andrews, P. J. +2 more
The work of organizations in the UK to observe Comet Halley is reviewed. The activities of the Comet Halley UK Coordinating Committee are discussed. Results from space probes are summarized, including Giotto Johnstone Plasma Analyzer, the Giotto Particulate Impact Analyzer, the Halley Multicolor Camera, and the International Cometary Explorer. In …
Variable dust emission from Wolf-Rayet stars.
van der Hucht, K. A.; The, P. S.; Williams, P. M.
An infrared photometric survey of late type Wolf-Rayet stars shows little evidence for secular variation in mass loss or dust formation rates apart from the three known variables: WR 48a, WR 137 (HD 192641) and WR 140 (HD 193793, the prototype). In 1985, WR 140 again brightened sharply in the infrared owing to the formation of circumstellar dust. …

Extinction in external galaxies.
Thompson, G. I.
It is suggested that there are only two general extinction laws, the galactic type and the linear SMC type. An attempt is made to show that the LMC extinction law is a composite of these two. The result is inconclusive due to the sensitivity of the constants of fit to the empirical data.

Presidential address : spectra of gaseous nebulae.
Seaton, M. J.
A brief historical review of observations of planetary nebulae are presented with attention given to Herschel's observation of NGC 1514 (1790) and Huggins' observations (1864). The current status of observations of gaseous nebulae is also presented; consideration is given to the identification of nebular lines, physical processes, the radio contin…
