Search for thermal X-ray features from the Crab nebula with the Hitomi soft X-ray spectrometer
Done, Chris; Safi-Harb, Samar; Hamaguchi, Kenji +192 more
The Crab nebula originated from a core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion observed in 1054 AD. When viewed as a supernova remnant (SNR), it has an anomalously low observed ejecta mass and kinetic energy for an Fe-core-collapse SN. Intensive searches have been made for a massive shell that solves this discrepancy, but none has been detected. An alte…
Hitomi X-ray studies of giant radio pulses from the Crab pulsar
Done, Chris; Safi-Harb, Samar; Hamaguchi, Kenji +201 more
To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2-300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio telescope in the 1.4-1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 2016 March 25, just before the loss o…
Discovery of recombining plasma from the faintest GeV supernova remnant HB 21 and a possible scenario for cosmic rays escaping from supernova remnant shocks
Nakazawa, Kazuhiro; Koyama, Katsuji; Bamba, Aya +4 more
We present an X-ray study of the GeV gamma-ray supernova remnant (SNR) HB 21 with Suzaku. HB 21 is interacting with molecular clouds, and is the faintest in the GeV band among known GeV SNRs. We discovered strong radiative recombination continua of Si and S from the center of the remnant, which provide direct evidence of a recombining plasma (RP).…
In-flight calibration of Hitomi Soft X-ray Spectrometer. (1) Background
Tsujimoto, Masahiro; Eckart, Megan E.; Kelley, Richard L. +19 more
The X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) instrument of Suzaku provided the first measurement of the non-X-ray background (NXB) of an X-ray calorimeter spectrometer, but the data set was limited. The Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) instrument of Hitomi was able to provide a more detailed picture of X-ray calorimeter background, with more than 360 ks of data whil…
Discovery of 6.4 keV line and soft X-ray emissions from G323.7-1.0 with Suzaku
Koyama, Katsuji; Matsumoto, Hironori; Nobukawa, Masayoshi +4 more
In this paper, the Suzaku X-ray data of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) candidate G323.7-1.0 are analyzed to search for X-ray emissions. Spatially extended enhancements in the 6.4 keV line and in soft X-rays are found inside or on the radio shell. The soft X-ray enhancement would be the hottest part of the shell-like X-ray emission along the …
Suzaku X-ray observations of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant CTB 1
Takahashi, Tadayuki; Uchida, Hiroyuki; Uchiyama, Yasunobu +6 more
We present an X-ray study of the mixed-morphology supernova remnant CTB 1 (G116.9+0.2) observed with Suzaku. The 0.6-2.0 keV spectra in the northeastern breakout region of CTB 1 are well represented by a collisional ionization-equilibrium plasma model with an electron temperature of ∼0.3 keV, whereas those in the southwestern inner-shell region ca…
Observational study on the fine structure and dynamics of a solar jet. II. Energy release process revealed by spectral analysis
Shibata, Kazunari; Ichimoto, Kiyoshi; Ueno, Satoru +3 more
We report on a solar jet phenomenon associated with the C5.4 class flare on 2014 November 11. The data of the jet was provided by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) aboard Hinode, and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph and Domeless Solar Telescope (DST) at Hida Observatory, Kyoto University. These plentiful data enabl…
Glimpse of the highly obscured HMXB IGR J16318-4848 with Hitomi
Done, Chris; Safi-Harb, Samar; Hamaguchi, Kenji +191 more
We report on a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318-4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of NH ∼ 1024 cm-2. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission lines. For physical and geometrical insight int…
Magnetic field analysis of the bow and terminal shock of the SS 433 jet
Nakanishi, Hiroyuki; Akamatsu, Hiroki; Akahori, Takuya +4 more
We report a polarization analysis of the eastern region of W 50, observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 1.4-3.0 GHz. In order to study the physical structures in the region where the SS 433 jet and W 50 interact, we obtain an intrinsic magnetic field vector map of that region. We find that the orientation of the intrinsic ma…
Multiwavelength study of X-ray luminous clusters in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program S16A field
Hoshino, Akio; Fukazawa, Yasushi; Nakazawa, Kazuhiro +34 more
We present a joint X-ray, optical, and weak-lensing analysis for X-ray luminous galaxy clusters selected from the MCXC (Meta-Catalog of X-Ray Detected Clusters of Galaxies) cluster catalog in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) survey field with S16A data. As a pilot study for a series of papers, we measure hydrostatic equilib…
