Large amplitude ion-acoustic solitons in a dusty plasma
Shukla, P. K.; Bharuthram, R.
Large amplitude ion-acoustic solitons in a plasma with a finite population of negatively charged dust grains are investigated. The effects of the dust grains on the soliton amplitude and Mach number are examined. It is found that both compressional and rarefactive solitons can occur.
Dust-acoustic waves in dusty plasmas
Yu, M. Y.; Shukla, P. K.; Rao, N. N.
New acoustic waves originating from a balance of dust particle inertia and plasma pressure are investigated. It is shown that these waves can propagate linearly as a normal mode in a dusty plasma, and non-linearly as supersonic solitons of either positive or negative electrostatic potential.
The acceleration of particles in the vicinity of comets
Ip, W. -H.; Axford, W. I.
The various processes capable of accelerating ions in the vicinity of comets as part of the comet/ solar wind interaction are considered. It is concluded that the most important are ion pick-up, adiabatic compression and second order Fermi acceleration in the turbulence associated with the interaction. Model particle spectra are calculated on the …
