Temporal evolution of the permanent shadowed regions at Mercury poles: applications for spectral detection of ices by SIMBIOSYS-VIHI on BepiColombo mission
Massironi, Matteo; Lucchetti, Alice; Cremonese, Gabriele +9 more
Radar observations from the Earth and multi-instrument measurements by MESSENGER mission have indicated the presence of large quantities of ices within the permanent shadowed regions (PSRs) located at Mercury poles. The detection and mapping of the distribution of volatile species on PSRs are among the primary scientific goals of the Spectrometer …
The star formation properties of the observed and simulated AGN Universe: BAT versus EAGLE
Alexander, D. M.; Bower, R. G.; Rosario, D. J. +3 more
In this paper, we present data from 72 low-redshift, hard X-ray selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) taken from the Swift-BAT 58 month catalogue. We utilize spectral energy distribution fitting to the optical to infrared photometry in order to estimate host galaxy properties. We compare this observational sample to a volume- and flux-matched sam…
An extreme-mass ratio, short-period eclipsing binary consisting of a B dwarf primary and a pre-main-sequence M star companion discovered by KELT
Bieryla, Allyson; Latham, David W.; Berlind, Perry +21 more
We present the discovery of KELT J072709 + 072007 (HD 58730), a very low mass ratio (q ≡ M2/M1 ≈ 0.07) eclipsing binary (EB) identified by the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) survey. We present the discovery light curve and perform a global analysis of four high-precision ground-based light curves, the Transiting…
Polarimetric and radiative transfer modelling of HD 172555
Scicluna, Peter; Bailey, Jeremy; Cotton, Daniel V. +3 more
The debris disc around HD 172555 was recently imaged in near-infrared polarized scattered light by the Very Large Telescope's Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument. Here we present optical aperture polarization measurements of HD 172555 by the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI), and its successor HIPPI-2 on t…
The White Dwarf Binary Pathways Survey -III. Contamination from hierarchical triples containing a white dwarf
Gänsicke, B. T.; Koester, D.; Parsons, S. G. +12 more
The White Dwarf Binary Pathways Survey aims at increasing the number of known detached A, F, G, and K main-sequence stars in close orbits with white dwarf companions (WD+AFGK binaries) to refine our understanding about compact binary evolution and the nature of Supernova Ia progenitors. These close WD+AFGK binary stars are expected to form through…
MeerKAT's discovery of a radio relic in the bimodal merging cluster A2384
Kale, R.; Oozeer, N.; Parekh, V. +12 more
We present the discovery of a single radio relic located at the edge of the galaxy cluster A2384, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. A2384 is a nearby (z = 0.092), low-mass, complex bimodal, merging galaxy cluster that displays a dense X-ray filament (∼700 kpc in length) between A2384(N; northern cluster) and A2384(S; southern cluster). The origin…
The Bubble Nebula NGC 7635 - testing the wind-blown bubble theory
Chu, Y. -H.; Guerrero, M. A.; Toalá, J. A. +5 more
We present a multiwavelength study of the iconic Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) and its ionizing star BD+60○2522. We obtained XMM-Newton EPIC X-ray observations to search for extended X-ray emission as in other similar wind-blown bubbles around massive stars. We also obtained San Pedro Mártir spectroscopic observations with the Manchester Ech…
Switches between accretion structures during flares in 4U 1901+03
Tsygankov, S.; Santangelo, A.; Zhang, Yi +125 more
We report on our analysis of the 2019 outburst of the X-ray accreting pulsar 4U 1901+03 observed with Insight-HXMT and NICER. Both spectra and pulse profiles evolve significantly in the decaying phase of the outburst. Dozens of flares are observed throughout the outburst. They are more frequent and brighter at the outburst peak. We find that the f…
Proxima Centauri - the nearest planet host observed simultaneously with AstroSat, Chandra, and HST
Schmitt, J. H. M. M.; Burwitz, V.; Loyd, R. O. Parke +6 more
Our nearest stellar neighbour, Proxima Centauri, is a low-mass star with spectral type dM5.5 and hosting an Earth-like planet orbiting within its habitable zone. However, the habitability of the planet depends on the high-energy radiation of the chromospheric and coronal activity of the host star. We report the AstroSat, Chandra, and HST observati…
Extended X-ray emission from the classic nova DQ Her - on the possible presence of a magnetized jet
Guerrero, M. A.; Toalá, J. A.; Santamaría, E. +2 more
We present an analysis of archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the magnetically active cataclysmic variable DQ Her and the shell around it ejected in a nova event in 1934. A careful revision of the Chandra observations confirms previous claims on the presence of extended X-ray emission around DQ Her and reveals that it actually correspo…
