Properties of Field Aligned Current in Plasma Sheet Boundary Layers in Magnetotail: Cluster Observation
Dunlop, M.; Liu, Zhen-Xing; Shi, Jian-Kui +2 more
Field aligned current (FAC) distribution in the plasma sheet boundary layers (PSBLs) in the magnetotail is studied statistically by analysing magnetic field data from the Cluster 4-point measurements. The results show that the FAC distribution on the dusk side is not the same as that on the dawn side in the magnetotail. On the each side earthward …
GEOPHYSICS, ASTRONOMY, AND ASTROPHYSICS: Interhemispheric Comparison of Dipole Tilt Angle Effects on Latitude of Mid-Altitude Cusp
Liu, Zhen-Xing; Shi, Jian-Kui; Zhang, Tie-Long +1 more
A statistical study of interhemispheric comparison of dipole tilt angle effect on the latitude of the mid-altitude cusp is preformed by a data set of the Cluster cusp crossings over a 5-year period. The result shows that the dipole tilt angle has a clear control of the cusp latitudinal location. When the dipole tilts sunwards, the cusp is shifted …
Probability of Field-Aligned Currents Observed by the Satellite Cluster in the Magnetotail
Liu, Zhen-Xing; Shi, Jian-Kui; Cheng, Zheng-Wei +1 more
Field-aligned current (FAC) density distribution at the plasma sheet boundary layers is statistically studied. The FAC is calculated by the so-called curlometer technique with the data from FGM onboard the four Cluster spacecraft in 2001. By calculation we obtain a large number of FAC samples. In the samples, most of calculated FAC densities were …
Analysis of the Interaction between Low-Frequency Waves and Ions in the High-Altitude Cusp Region Observed by Satellite Cluster
Balogh, A.; Reme, H.; Cao, Jin-Bin +8 more
The energy transfer between ions (protons) and low frequency waves (LFWs) in the frequency range f1 from 0.3 to 10 Hz is observed by Cluster crossing the high-altitude polar cusp. The energy transfer between low frequency waves and ions has two means. One is that the energy is transferred from low frequency waves to ions and ions energy…
Dynamics of the Globular Cluster NGC 6656 with WFPC2
Chen, Li; Chen, Ding; Wang, Jia-Ji
We have used the Hubble Space Telescope observations to measure proper motion of the globular cluster NGC 6656 (M22) with respect to the background bulge stars and its internal velocity dispersion profile. Based on the proper motion of the cluster, its space velocity (Pi,Theta,W) = (184+/-3, 209+/-14, 132+/-15) km s-1 and galactic orbit…
