The chemistry of stars in the bar of the Milky Way
Schultheis, M.; Rojas-Arriagada, A.; Wegg, C. +1 more
We use a sample of 938 red clump giant stars located in the direction of the Galactic long bar to study the chemistry of Milky Way bar stars. Kinematically separating stars on bar orbits from stars with inner disc orbits, we find that stars on bar-like orbits are more metal rich with a mean iron abundance of ⟨[Fe/H]⟩ = +0.30 compared to ⟨[Fe/H]⟩ =…
Masses, oxygen, and carbon abundances in CHEPS dwarf stars
Jones, H. R. A.; Jenkins, J. S.; Pavlenko, Y. V. +3 more
Context. We report the results from the determination of stellar masses, carbon, and oxygen abundances in the atmospheres of 107 stars from the Calan-Hertfordshire Extrasolar Planet Search (CHEPS) programme. Our stars are drawn from a population with a significantly super-solar metallicity. At least 10 of these stars are known to host orbiting pla…
VIRTIS-H observations of the dust coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko: spectral properties and color temperature variability with phase and elevation
Kappel, D.; Erard, S.; Crovisier, J. +14 more
We analyze 2-5 µm spectroscopic observations of the dust coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko obtained with the Visible InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS-H) instrument on board Rosetta from 3 June to 29 October 2015 at heliocentric distances rh = 1.24-1.55 AU. The 2-2.5 µm color, bolometric albedo, and color t…
Activity and rotation of the X-ray emitting Kepler stars
Belfiore, A.; Marelli, M.; Poretti, E. +6 more
The relation between magnetic activity and rotation in late-type stars provides fundamental information on stellar dynamos and angular momentum evolution. Rotation-activity studies found in the literature suffer from inhomogeneity in the measurement of activity indexes and rotation periods. We overcome this limitation with a study of the X-ray emi…
Dense cores and star formation in the giant molecular cloud Vela C★★★
Hill, T.; Weiss, A.; Csengeri, T. +12 more
Context. The Vela Molecular Ridge is one of the nearest (700 pc) giant molecular cloud (GMC) complexes hosting intermediate-mass (up to early B, late O stars) star formation, and is located in the outer Galaxy, inside the Galactic plane. Vela C is one of the GMCs making up the Vela Molecular Ridge, and exhibits both sub-regions of robust and sub-r…
Thermal properties of slowly rotating asteroids: results from a targeted survey
Geier, S.; Pál, A.; Thizy, O. +51 more
Context. Earlier work suggests that slowly rotating asteroids should have higher thermal inertias than faster rotators because the heat wave penetrates deeper into the subsurface. However, thermal inertias have been determined mainly for fast rotators due to selection effects in the available photometry used to obtain shape models required for the…
Homogeneity of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko as seen by CONSERT: implication on composition and formation
Blum, J.; Vincent, J. -B.; Kofman, W. +3 more
Context. After the landing of Philae, CONSERT probed the nucleus of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) and observed no heterogeneities at metric scale within the probed part of the small lobe of 67P. Further studies have then quantified the observed homogeneity in terms of maximum permittivity contrast versus the typical size of heterogeneities.

The PLATO Solar-like Light-curve Simulator. A tool to generate realistic stellar light-curves with instrumental effects representative of the PLATO mission
Smith, A. M. S.; Samadi, R.; Lebreton, Y. +10 more
Context. ESA's PLATO space mission, to be launched by the end of 2026, aims to detect and characterise Earth-like planets in their habitable zone using asteroseismology and the analysis of the transit events. The preparation of science objectives will require the implementation of hare-and-hound exercises relying on the massive generation of repre…
The double blue-straggler sequence in NGC 2173: an artifact of field contamination
Dalessandro, E.; Bastian, N.; Ferraro, F. R. +3 more
Here we discuss the case of the double blue straggler star (BSS) sequence recently detected in the young stellar cluster NGC 2173 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by Li et al. (2018, ApJ, 856, 25). In order to investigate this feature we made use of two Hubble Space Telescope (HST) sets of observations, one (the same one used by Li et al.) prob…
High-precision analysis of binary stars with planets. I. Searching for condensation temperature trends in the HD 106515 system
Jofré, E.; Jaque Arancibia, M.; Saffe, C. +4 more
Aims: We explore for the first time the probable chemical signature of planet formation in the remarkable binary system HD 106515. Star A hosts a massive long-period planet with 9 MJup detected by radial velocity, while there is no planet detected at the B star. We also refine stellar and planetary parameters by using non-solar-sca…
