Cosmic shear from STIS pure parallels. II. Analysis
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020195 Bibcode: 2002A&A...385..743H

White, S. D. M.; Fosbury, R. A. E.; Schneider, P. +6 more

We report on the marginal detection of cosmic shear on sub-arcmin scales with archive data from the STIS camera on board HST. For the measurement 121 galaxy fields with a field of view of 51'' x 51'' are used to obtain an rms cosmic shear of ~ 4% with 1.5sigma significance. This value is consistent with groundbased results obtained by other groups…

Survey of the ISM in early-type galaxies. IV. The hot dust component
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020582 Bibcode: 2002A&A...389..355F

Panagia, N.; Macchetto, F. D.; Pastoriza, M. G. +3 more

We present mid-IR photometric properties for a sample of 28 early-type galaxies observed at 6.75, 9.63 and 15 mu m with the ISOCAM instrument on board the ISO satellite. We find total mid-IR luminosities in the range (3-42) x 108 Lsun. The spectral energy distributions (SED) of the galaxies were derived using the mid-IR data …

A chromospheric scenario for the activity of beta Pictoris, as revealed by FUSE
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020741 Bibcode: 2002A&A...390.1049B

Deleuil, M.; Bouret, J. -C.; Roberge, A. +3 more

We investigate a chromospheric scenario to explain the characteristics of the far-UV emission lines of beta Pictoris, revealed by FUSE spectra of this famous circumstellar disk system. The model assumes a thin region heated up to a few 105 K located close to the stellar photosphere. The resonance lines of C III at 977 Å and O VI at 1032…

XMM-Newton observations of the isolated neutron star RX J0806.4-4123
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020778 Bibcode: 2002A&A...391..571H

Haberl, F.; Zavlin, V. E.

The isolated neutron star RX J0806.4-4123 was observed with XMM-Newton in November 2000. The data from the three EPIC instruments allowed us (i) to derive an improved X-ray position to an accuracy of 2-3 arcsec, (ii) to accumulate the first medium-resolution soft X-ray spectra of high statistical quality and (iii) to find a cand…

High-Resolution X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of N 103B
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020963 Bibcode: 2002A&A...392..955V

Kaastra, J. S.; Mewe, R.; Behar, E. +5 more

The X-ray emission from the young supernova remnant (SNR) N 103B is measured and analysed using the high-resolution cameras and spectrometers on board XMM-Newton and Chandra. The spectrum from the entire remnant is reproduced very well with three plasma components of kTe = 0.55, 0.65, and 3.5 keV, corresponding roughly to line emission …

The physical structure of Magellanic Cloud H II regions. I. Dataset
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020424 Bibcode: 2002A&A...390..649V

van der Hulst, J. M.; Vermeij, R.; Damour, F. +1 more

We present infrared and optical spectroscopic data for 11 H Ii regions and one Supernova Remnant in the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. The infrared data have been obtained with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer and Long Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory as part of a Guaranteed Time Program on H Ii regions in Local …

HST images of B2 radio galaxies: A link between circum-nuclear dust and radio properties?
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20021462 Bibcode: 2002A&A...396..857D

Capetti, A.; Morganti, R.; de Ruiter, H. R. +2 more

Almost 60% of the B2 low luminosity radio galaxies have been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. We present an analysis of the dust features, which are often present in the form of circum-nuclear disks or lanes, and show that there are correlations between radio source and dust properties. It is found that nearby radio sources in which a jet…

Hot dust in normal star-forming galaxies: JHKL' photometry of the ISO Key Project sample
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20021335 Bibcode: 2002A&A...394..873H

Helou, G.; Hunt, L. K.; Giovanardi, C.

We present JHK and 3.8 mu m (L') photometry of 26 galaxies in the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Normal Galaxy Key Project (KP) sample and of seven normal ellipticals with the aim of investigating the origin of the 4 mu m emission. The majority of the KP galaxies, and all the ellipticals, have K-L<~ 1.0, consistent with stellar photospheres p…

Dynamical modeling of the stellar nucleus of M 31
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020298 Bibcode: 2002A&A...388..766S

Sridhar, S.; Sambhus, N.

We present stellar dynamical models of the lopsided, double-peaked nucleus of M 31, derived from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. A Schwarzschild-type method, in conjunction with Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, was employed to construct steadily rotating, hot, stellar disks. The stars orbit a massive dark object, on prograde and retrograde …

Additional TWA members?. Spectroscopic verification of kinematically selected TWA candidates
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20020159 Bibcode: 2002A&A...385..862S

Zuckerman, B.; Bessell, M. S.; Song, I.

We present spectroscopic measurements of the 23 new candidate members of the TW Hydrae Association from \citet{MF}. Based on Hα and Li 6708 Å strengths together with location on a color-magnitude diagram for Hipparcos TWA candidates, we found only three possible new members (TYC 7760-0835-1, TYC 8238-1462-1, and TYC 8234-2856-1) in addition to the…
