We present the X-ray properties of a massive cluster of galaxies (RXC J2228.6+2036 at z = 0.421) using XMM-Newton data. The X-ray mass modeling is based on the temperature and density distributions of the intracluster medium derived using a deprojection method. We find that RXC J2228.6+2036 is a hot cluster (T500=8.92^+1.78-1.32

On the relation between DC current locations and an EUV bright point: A case study
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:200809975 Bibcode: 2008A&A...490..345S

Madjarska, M. S.; Büchner, J.; Santos, J. C. +1 more

Context: Motion of the photospheric plasma forces the footpoints of magnetic flux tubes to move. This can give rise to electric currents in the solar atmosphere. The dissipation of these electric currents and the consequent heating of the solar plasma may be responsible for the formation of Extreme-UltraViolet (EUV) and X-ray bright points. Earlie…

Broadband imaging and narrowband polarimetry of comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, components B and C, on 3, 4, 8, and 9 May 2006
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20078527 Bibcode: 2008A&A...480..277B

Boehnhardt, H.; Borisov, G.; Bonev, T.

Context: The Jupiter family comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 (SW3) split into several pieces in 1995. Some of the original fragments were observed during the next apparition of the comet in 1999-2001. The last return of the comet in 2005-2006 was accompanied by tremendous further splitting of some SW3 components - in particular component B - into …

Bulges of disk galaxies at intermediate redshifts. I. Samples with and without bulges in the Groth Strip survey
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:200809406 Bibcode: 2008A&A...488.1167D

Cristóbal-Hornillos, D.; Guzmán, R.; Balcells, M. +4 more

Context: Analysis of bulges to redshifts of up to z ∼ 1 have provided ambiguous results as to whether bulges as a class are old structures akin to elliptical galaxies or younger products of the evolution of their host disks.
Aims: We aim to define a sample of intermediate-z disk galaxies harbouring central bulges, and a complementary sample of…

Slit and integral-field optical spectroscopy of the enigmatic quasar HE 0450-2958
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20078725 Bibcode: 2008A&A...480...69L

Magain, P.; Courbin, F.; Letawe, G.

Context: Interest in the quasar HE 0450-2958 arose following the publication of the non-detection of its expected massive host, leading to various interpretations.
Aims: This article investigates the gaseous and stellar contents of the system through additional VLT/FORS slit spectra and integral field spectroscopy from VLT/VIMOS.
Methods: …

The dynamical state of A548 from XMM-Newton data: X-ray and radio connection
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:200809445 Bibcode: 2008A&A...484..621S

Teyssier, R.; Govoni, F.; Giovannini, G. +5 more

Context: We present a detailed study of the X-ray properties of the galaxy cluster Abell 548b (z = 0.04), using XMM-Newton data, and discuss the connection between the thermal properties and the presence of two extended relic radio sources located at the cluster periphery.
Aims: We wish to analyze the dynamical state of the cluster and confirm…

Shock-related radio emission during coronal mass ejection lift-off?
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20079155 Bibcode: 2008A&A...483..297P

Pohjolainen, S.

Aims: We identify the source of fast-drifting decimetric-metric radio emission that is sometimes observed prior to the so-called flare continuum emission. Fast-drift structures and continuum bursts are also observed in association with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), not only flares.
Methods: We analyse radio spectral features and images acquir…

DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20079308 Bibcode: 2008A&A...484..451H

Pietsch, W.; Haberl, F.

Context: A bright X-ray transient was seen during an XMM-Newton observation in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in October 2006.
Aims: The data from the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) allow us to accurately locate the source and to investigate its temporal and spectral behaviour.
Methods: We extracted X-ray spectra…

VLA and Effelsberg observations of the interstellar medium around the runaway star WR 124
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20078339 Bibcode: 2008A&A...478..443C

Cichowolski, S.; Pineault, S.; Arnal, E. M. +1 more

Aims:We present very large array (VLA) and Effelsberg radio continuum and 21 cm H I line observations of the interstellar medium (ISM) surrounding the runaway star WR 124 and the nebula M 1-67. The H I data have been used to investigate the effects that a star with a strong stellar wind and a high peculiar velocity has on the ISM.

Analysis and interpretation of a fast limb CME with eruptive prominence, C-flare, and EUV dimming
DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361:20078311 Bibcode: 2008A&A...483..599K

Filippov, B.; Koutchmy, S.; Golub, L. +3 more

Aims: Coronal mass ejections or CMEs are large dynamical solar-corona events. The mass balance and kinematics of a fast limb CME, including its prominence progenitor and the associated flare, will be compared with computed magnetic structures to look for their origin and effect.
Methods: Multi-wavelength ground-based and spaceborne observation…
