Interpreting the Cosmic Infrared Background: Constraints on the Evolution of the Dust-enshrouded Star Formation Rate
Elbaz, D.; Chary, R.
The mid-infrared local luminosity function is evolved with redshift to fit the spectrum of the cosmic infrared background (CIRB) at λ>5 µm and the galaxy counts from various surveys at mid-infrared, far-infrared, and submillimeter wavelengths. A variety of evolutionary models provide satisfactory fits to the CIRB and the number counts. Th…
ISO spectroscopy of circumstellar dust in 14 Herbig Ae/Be systems: Towards an understanding of dust processing
Waters, L. B. F. M.; van den Ancker, M. E.; Meeus, G. +3 more
We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spectra of fourteen isolated Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars, to study the characteristics of their circumstellar dust. These spectra show large star-to-star differences, in the emission features of both carbon-rich and oxygen-rich dust grains. The IR spectra were combined with photometric data ranging from t…
Infrared Space Observatory's Discovery of C4H2, C6H2, and Benzene in CRL 618
Waters, L. B. F. M.; Cernicharo, José; Tielens, A. G. G. M. +4 more
We report on the detection with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), for the first time in the circumstellar medium, of the polyacetylenic chains C4H2 and C6H2 and of benzene (C6H6) in the direction of the proto-planetary nebula CRL 618. Surprisingly, the abundances of di- and tria…
The Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of Normal Star-forming Galaxies
Dale, Daniel A.; Helou, George; Silbermann, Nancy A. +2 more
We present a new phenomenological model for the spectral energy distribution of normal star-forming galaxies between 3 and 1100 µm. A sequence of realistic galaxy spectra are constructed from a family of dust emission curves assuming a power-law distribution of dust mass over a wide range of interstellar radiation fields. For each interstell…
Far-Infrared Spectroscopy of Normal Galaxies: Physical Conditions in the Interstellar Medium
Helou, G.; Contursi, A.; Stacey, G. +10 more
The most important cooling lines of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) lie in the far-infrared (FIR). We present measurements by the Infrared Space Observatory Long Wavelength Spectrometer of seven lines from neutral and ionized ISM of 60 normal, star-forming galaxies. The galaxy sample spans a range in properties such as morphology, FIR colors…
The CH out-of-plane bending modes of PAH molecules in astrophysical environments
Hony, S.; Tielens, A. G. G. M.; Allamandola, L. J. +3 more
We present 10-15 mu m spectra of a sample of H ii regions, YSOs and evolved stars that show strong unidentified infrared emission features, obtained with the ISO/SWS spectrograph on-board ISO. These spectra reveal a plethora of emission features with bands at 11.0, 11.2, 12.0, 12.7, 13.5 and 14.2 mu m. These features are observed to vary considera…
Processing of silicate dust grains in Herbig Ae/Be systems
Waters, L. B. F. M.; Hony, S.; Dominik, C. +3 more
We have analysed the 10 mu m spectral region of a sample of Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars. The spectra are dominated by a broad emission feature caused by warm amorphous silicates, and by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In HD 163296 we find aliphatic carbonaceous dust, the first detection of this material in a HAEBE star. The silicate band shows a …
ISOCAM observations of the rho Ophiuchi cloud: Luminosity and mass functions of the pre-main sequence embedded cluster
Prusti, T.; Olofsson, G.; Boulanger, F. +19 more
We present the results of the first extensive mid-infrared (IR) imaging survey of the rho Ophiuchi embedded cluster, performed with the ISOCAM camera on board the ISO satellite. The main rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud L1688, as well as the two secondary clouds L1689N and L1689S, have been completely surveyed for point sources at 6.7 mu m and 14.3 mu…
Ice absorption features in the 5-8 µm region toward embedded protostars
Whittet, D. C. B.; Schutte, W. A.; Tielens, A. G. G. M. +2 more
We have obtained 5-8 µm spectra towards 10~embedded protostars using the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO-SWS) with the aim of studying the composition of interstellar ices. The spectra are dominated by absorption bands at 6.0 µm and 6.85 µm. The observed peak positions, widths and relati…
A long-wavelength view on galaxy evolution from deep surveys by the Infrared Space Observatory
Aussel, H.; Elbaz, D.; Franceschini, A. +2 more
We discuss the constraints set on galaxy evolution by a variety of data from deep extragalactic surveys performed in the mid-IR and far-IR with the Infrared Space Observatory and with millimetric telescopes at longer wavelengths. These observations indicate extremely high rates of evolution for IR galaxies, exceeding those measured for galaxies at…
