The Cluster Lensing and Supernova Survey with Hubble: An Overview
Donahue, Megan; Broadhurst, Tom; Moustakas, John +42 more
The Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) is a 524-orbit Multi-Cycle Treasury Program to use the gravitational lensing properties of 25 galaxy clusters to accurately constrain their mass distributions. The survey, described in detail in this paper, will definitively establish the degree of concentration of dark matter in the clu…
3D-HST: A Wide-field Grism Spectroscopic Survey with the Hubble Space Telescope
Schmidt, Kasper B.; van Dokkum, Pieter G.; Franx, Marijn +27 more
We present 3D-HST, a near-infrared spectroscopic Treasury program with the Hubble Space Telescope for studying the physical processes that shape galaxies in the distant universe. 3D-HST provides rest-frame optical spectra for a sample of ~7000 galaxies at 1 < z < 3.5, the epoch when ~60% of all star formation took place, the number density o…
The Hawaii Infrared Parallax Program. I. Ultracool Binaries and the L/T Transition
Dupuy, Trent J.; Liu, Michael C.
We present the first results from our high-precision infrared (IR) astrometry program at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We measure parallaxes for 83 ultracool dwarfs (spectral types M6-T9) in 49 systems, with a median uncertainty of 1.1 mas (2.3%) and as good as 0.7 mas (0.8%). We provide the first parallaxes for 48 objects in 29 systems, and…
Structural Parameters of Galaxies in CANDELS
Kartaltepe, J. S.; Barden, M.; Ferguson, H. C. +19 more
We present global structural parameter measurements of 109,533 unique, H F160W-selected objects from the CANDELS multi-cycle treasury program. Sérsic model fits for these objects are produced with GALFIT in all available near-infrared filters (H F160W, J F125W and, for a subset, Y F105W). The parameters …
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). I. Introduction to the Survey
Sawicki, Marcin; Jordán, Andrés; Wilson, Christine D. +49 more
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) is a program that uses the 1 deg2 MegaCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to carry out a comprehensive optical imaging survey of the Virgo cluster, from its core to its virial radius—covering a total area of 104 deg2—in the u*griz bandpasses. Thanks to a dedicat…
The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury
Bell, Eric F.; Skillman, Evan D.; Williams, Benjamin F. +30 more
The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury is an ongoing Hubble Space Telescope Multi-Cycle Treasury program to image ~1/3 of M31's star-forming disk in six filters, spanning from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). We use the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to resolve the galaxy into millions of indiv…
A Catalog of 132,684 Clusters of Galaxies Identified from Sloan Digital Sky Survey III
Han, J. L.; Wen, Z. L.; Liu, F. S.
Using the photometric redshifts of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), we identify 132,684 clusters in the redshift range of 0.05 <= z < 0.8. Monte Carlo simulations show that the false detection rate is less than 6% for the whole sample. The completeness is more than 95% for clusters with a mass of M 200 &g…
A Revised Parallel-sequence Morphological Classification of Galaxies: Structure and Formation of S0 and Spheroidal Galaxies
Kormendy, John; Bender, Ralf
We update van den Bergh's parallel-sequence galaxy classification in which S0 galaxies form a sequence S0a-S0b-S0c that parallels the sequence Sa-Sb-Sc of spiral galaxies. The ratio B/T of bulge-to-total light defines the position of a galaxy in this tuning-fork diagram. Our classification makes one major improvement. We extend the S0a-S0b-S0c seq…
The Chandra COSMOS Survey. III. Optical and Infrared Identification of X-Ray Point Sources
Salvato, M.; Fiore, F.; Vignali, C. +29 more
The Chandra COSMOS Survey (C-COSMOS) is a large, 1.8 Ms, Chandra program that has imaged the central 0.9 deg2 of the COSMOS field down to limiting depths of 1.9 × 10-16 erg cm-2 s-1 in the soft (0.5-2 keV) band, 7.3 × 10-16 erg cm-2 s-1 in the hard (2-10 keV) band, and 5.…
Collisional Excitation of the [C II] Fine Structure Transition in Interstellar Clouds
Velusamy, T.; Goldsmith, Paul F.; Pineda, Jorge L. +1 more
We analyze the collisional excitation of the 158 µm (1900.5 GHz) fine structure transition of ionized carbon in terms of line intensities produced by simple cloud models. The single C+ fine structure transition is a very important coolant of the atomic interstellar medium (ISM) and of photon-dominated regions in which carbon is pa…
