The interstellar absorption-line spectrum of mu. Oph.
Boehm-Vitense, E.; Cardelli, J.
UV interstellar lines have been measured on high-resolution, long- and short-wavelength IUE spectra of the B8 V star Mu Oph. Column densities for the observed atoms and ions have been determined as well as turbulent velocities. The interstellar spectrum of Mu Oph is similar to the ones for Rho Oph and Zeta Oph. The ionization equilibria of several…
Detection of the 1400 angstrom absorption in the ultraviolet spectrumof the DA white dwarf LB 3303.
Wegner, G.
Low-resolution ultraviolet International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra of the southern white dwarf LB 3303 show the presence of the wavelength 1400 absorption feature reported by Greenstein in the spectrum of 40 Eri B. The equivalent width is 5.7 A, and the measured wavelength is 1394 A. A comparison of the ultraviolet fluxes with model atmospheres…
IUE observations of the X-ray burst source 4U/MXB 1735-44.
van Paradijs, J.; Hammerschlag-Hensberge, G.; McClintock, J. E.
The ultraviolet (1250-1950 A) energy distribution of the X-ray burst source 4U/MXB 1735-44 has been observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. The source was detected with an average flux of 1.1 x 10 to the -15th ergs/sq cm per sec per A. The similarity of the optical energy distribution of this source to that of Sco X-1 extends into th…
Is there a gaseous halo around the Large Magellanic Cloud ?
Feitzinger, J. V.; Schmidt-Kaler, T.
Arguments are given which show that the evidence for a hot gaseous halo around the Large Magellanic Cloud is not at all conclusive. The observations of interstellar lines in the UV, optical, and radio domain are well represented by a kinematic model of the LMC with a warped, two-layer structure.
IUE observations of R Aqr.
Johnson, H. M.
High- and low-dispersion observations made in 1980 are compared with earlier observations. Certain ultraviolet lines are apparently constant in the face of Mira pulsation and rotation and orbital motion of the hypothetical hot companion. Other line features and the ultraviolet continuum vary significantly but not in phase with the Mira. The Mg II …
Far-ultraviolet observations of MV Lyr.
Maraschi, L.; Tanzi, E. G.; Chiappetti, L. +1 more
Ultraviolet observation of MV Lyrae in the low state obtained with the IUE are presented, and their implications in establishing the nature of the system are examined. The line spectrum from 1200 to 3100 A exhibits weak absorption and emission features and is consistent with the estimated distance of 320 pc. The shape of the continuum is close to,…
The detection of interstellar C I in the immediate vicinity of the sun
Kondo, Y.; Bruhweiler, F. C.
Multiple stacked IUE spectra reveal the presence of interstellar C I 1657 in the trough of a corresponding photospheric feature in the nearby star, Alpha PsA (d = 7 pc). This represents the first detection of this neutral atom in the interstellar medium within the immediate vicinity of the sun. It is suggested that C I may be a much better diagnos…
C IV and Lyman-alpha emission lines in Seyfert 1 galaxies
Stoner, R.; Ptak, R.; Gregory, S.
Good resolution spectra of C IV and Lyman-alpha emission in four Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 5548, NGC 4151, NGC 3738, and Fairall 9) are examined, reporting the line profiles and intensity information for this emission. The observations are made with the short wavelength prime camera on the IUE satellite, with a spectral coverage from 1150 A to 2000 …
IUE low-dispersion spectra of six luminous stars in symmetric nebula.
Johnson, H. M.
The stars and nebulae are HD 156738 and HDE 319703A, respectively centered in a pair of symmetric nebulae among the NGC 6334 group, AG Car in its nebula, HDE 250550 in nebula 8 of a catalog by Herbig, 209 BAC in Ml-67, and HD 89358 in NGC 3199. These include two O stars, two WN stars, an unstable B supergiant, and a ZAMS B star. Four of them are a…
An application of the method of wavelength coincidence statistics to the ultraviolet spectrum kap Cnc.
Bord, D. J.; Davidson, J. P.
The method of wavelength coincidence statistics (WCS) is applied to the ultraviolet spectrum of the Hg-Mn star Kappa Cnc. Methodological checks involving searches for the element Mn, Cr, and Fe yield positive results, consistent with previous spectroscopic studies of this star. A search for heavy elements (Z in the range 74-81) in the region 1960-…
