Capella: Separating the Giants
Young, P. R.; Dupree, A. K.
Images from the Faint Object Camera (FOC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are used to spatially separate the two giants of Capella (α Aurigae; HD 34029) for the first time at ultraviolet wavelengths. The images were obtained with broadband filters that isolate the wavelength regions 2500-3000 Å and 1300-1500 Å. The cool G8 giant is found to be…
Damping of Low-Frequency Alfvén Waves in Fast Polar Coronal Winds from the Rotating Sun
Lou, Yu-Qing
Steady fast solar winds with high speeds of ~750-800 km s-1 persist from polar coronal holes and meandering coronal holes that extend to lower latitudes. Observations of Ulysses and earlier spacecraft confirmed the presence of large-amplitude transverse magnetic field fluctuations in the fast solar wind, characterized by outward-traveli…
Filaments and Ionized Gas in the Vicinity of 3C 244.1
Sparks, William B.; Macchetto, F. Duccio; Martel, André R. +1 more
We present results of Hubble Space Telescope observations of the radio galaxy 3C 244.1. The broadband F702W (R) and F555W (V) images (WFPC2/PC) show an elliptical galaxy, and gaseous filaments and blobs surrounding it. In the narrowband ramp filter, dominated by [O III] λ5007, these filaments are bright and have the same morphology as the broadban…
Ultraviolet C I Lines in the HgMn Star χ Lupi
Proffitt, Charles R.
We present non-LTE calculations for the ionization equilibrium of C I tailored to match the HgMn star χ Lupi. Comparisons are made with the UV C I lines observed using the Hubble Space Telescope's Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph, as well as with Voyager far-ultraviolet (FUV) measurements of the flux between 1040 and 1200 Å, where C I is the d…
