The Ages of Passive Galaxies in a z = 1.62 Protocluster
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa7948 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...844...43L

Papovich, Casey; Tran, Kim-Vy H.; Willmer, Christopher N. A. +9 more

We present a study of the relation between galaxy stellar age and mass for 14 members of the z = 1.62 protocluster IRC 0218, using multiband imaging and HST G102 and G141 grism spectroscopy. Using UVJ colors to separate galaxies into star-forming and quiescent populations, we find that, at stellar masses {M}* ≥slant {10}10.85

The State-of-the-art HST Astro-photometric Analysis of the Core of ω Centauri. II. Differential-reddening Map
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa705f Bibcode: 2017ApJ...842....7B

Anderson, J.; Bedin, L. R.; King, I. R. +3 more

We take advantage of the exquisite quality of the Hubble Space Telescope astro-photometric catalog of the core of ωCen presented in the first paper of this series to derive a high-resolution, high-precision, high-accuracy differential-reddening map of the field. The map has a spatial resolution of 2 × 2 arcsec2 over a total field of vie…

Inflows, Outflows, and a Giant Donor in the Remarkable Recurrent Nova M31N 2008-12a?—Hubble Space Telescope Photometry of the 2015 Eruption
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa9062 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...849...96D

Ness, J. -U.; Henze, M.; Shafter, A. W. +14 more

The recurrent nova M31N 2008-12a experiences annual eruptions, contains a near-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf, and has the largest mass accretion rate in any nova system. In this paper, we present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/UVIS photometry of the late decline of the 2015 eruption. We couple these new data with archival HST observations of t…

The Local [C II] 158 µm Emission Line Luminosity Function
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/834/1/36 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...834...36H

Capak, Peter; Hemmati, Shoubaneh; Faisst, Andreas +4 more

We present, for the first time, the local [C II] 158 µm emission line luminosity function measured using a sample of more than 500 galaxies from the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. [C II] luminosities are measured from the Herschel PACS observations of the Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) in the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey and es…

A Search for L/T Transition Dwarfs with Pan-STARRS1 and WISE. III. Young L Dwarf Discoveries and Proper Motion Catalogs in Taurus and Scorpius-Centaurus
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa5df0 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...837...95B

Magnier, Eugene A.; Chambers, K. C.; Flewelling, H. +13 more

We present the discovery of eight young M7-L2 dwarfs in the Taurus star-forming region and the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association, serendipitously found during a wide-field search for L/T transition dwarfs using Pan-STARRS1 (optical) and WISE (mid-infrared) photometry. We identify PSO J060.3200+25.9644 (near-infrared spectral type L1) and PSO J077.…

Non-Gaussian Velocity Distributions in Solar Flares from Extreme Ultraviolet Lines: A Possible Diagnostic of Ion Acceleration
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/836/1/35 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...836...35J

Fletcher, Lyndsay; Jeffrey, Natasha L. S.; Labrosse, Nicolas

In a solar flare, a large fraction of the magnetic energy released is converted rapidly to the kinetic energy of non-thermal particles and bulk plasma motion. This will likely result in non-equilibrium particle distributions and turbulent plasma conditions. We investigate this by analyzing the profiles of high temperature extreme ultraviolet emiss…

Stellar Dynamics and Star Formation Histories of z ∼ 1 Radio-loud Galaxies
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa8768 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...847...72B

Bell, Eric F.; Maseda, Michael V.; van Dokkum, Pieter G. +18 more

We investigate the stellar kinematics and stellar populations of 58 radio-loud galaxies of intermediate luminosities (L 3 GHz > 1023 W Hz-1) at 0.6 < z < 1. This sample is constructed by cross-matching galaxies from the deep VLT/VIMOS LEGA-C spectroscopic survey with the VLA 3 GHz data set. The LEGA-C cont…

The Relationship Between Brightest Cluster Galaxy Star Formation and the Intracluster Medium in CLASH
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/aa82b9 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...846..103F

Donahue, Megan; Moustakas, John; Postman, Marc +2 more

We study the nature of feedback mechanisms in the 11 CLASH brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) that exhibit extended ultraviolet and nebular line emission features. We estimate star formation rates (SFRs), dust masses, and starburst durations using a Bayesian photometry-fitting technique that accounts for both stellar and dust emission from the UV t…

The First Scattered-light Image of the Debris Disk around the Sco-Cen Target HD 129590
DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/aa7943 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...843L..12M

Hinkley, Sasha; Matthews, Elisabeth; Stapelfeldt, Karl +7 more

We present the first scattered-light image of the debris disk around HD 129590, a ∼1.3 M G1V member of the Scorpius-Centaurus association with an age of ∼10-16 Myr. The debris disk is imaged with the high contrast imaging instrument SPHERE at the Very Large Telescope, and is revealed by both the IRDIS and IFS subsytems, operating in t…

The Highly Ionized Circumgalactic Medium is Kinematically Uniform around Galaxies
DOI: 10.3847/1538-4357/834/2/148 Bibcode: 2017ApJ...834..148N

Charlton, Jane C.; Kacprzak, Glenn G.; Churchill, Christopher W. +3 more

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) traced by O VI λ λ 1031,1037 doublet absorption has been found to concentrate along the projected major and minor axes of the host galaxies. This suggests that O VI traces accreting and outflowing gas, respectively, which are key components of the baryon cycle of galaxies. We investigate this further by examining th…
