IUE observations of the quasar 3C 273.
Boggess, A.; Lane, A. L.; Oke, J. B. +9 more
IUE observations indicate that the spectrum of 3C 273 is similar to that of other large-redshift quasars. There is a large excess of flux in the range 2400 A to 5300 A, which encompasses the Balmer jump region but which does not appear to be explainable by Balmer emission. The intensity ratio of Lyman-alpha to H-beta is 5.5, in agreement with othe…
IUE spectra of the nuclei of M31 and M32.
Johnson, H. M.
Observed spectra are reproduced in the 1000-3400 wavelength range; line identifications are tabulated, and spectrophotometry of parts of the continua is given. The flux density of a few line emissions can be estimated from their equivalent widths. The strongest line emissions differ in the two nuclei, and they do not fit spectral patterns that are…
The effective temperature, radius, rate of mass loss and luminosity of P Cygni, HD 190603, kappa Cassiopeiae, and rho Leonis.
Underhill, A. B.
The method developed by Underhill et al. (1979) is applied to P Cyg (B1 Iap), HD 190603 (B1 Ia+), kappa Cas (B1 Ia), and rho Leo (B1 Ib or Iab) using the S2/68 absolute UV photometry for faint stars (Thompson et al., 1978) and the 13-color photometry. Some profiles of the UV resonance lines are presented, and the implication of pertinent data for …
IUE observations of gas stream effects in the ultraviolet spectrum of U Cephei.
Kondo, Y.; McCluskey, G. E.; Stencel, R. E.
The eclipsing binary U Cephei has been observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. Nine high-resolution spectra in the mid-ultraviolet (1900-3200 A) and one high-resolution spectrum in the far-ultraviolet (1200-1900 A) were obtained. The effects of gas streaming are clearly seen in the mid-ultraviolet resonance lines of F…
IUE observations of 32 Cygni: the effects of the B star within the upper chromosphere of a late-type supergiant.
Kondo, Y.; McCluskey, G. E.; Stencel, R. E. +1 more
The object 32 Cygni is a Aurigae-type system, comprised of a KS supergiant and a dwarf, which undergoes atmospheric eclipses. We have obtained high-resolution ultraviolet spectra of this system with IUEnear orbital phase 0.2, covering the 1175-3000 A region. The UV spectrum is striking, since all resonance and other strong lines exhibit marked P C…
On the energy distribution in Sirius B.
Boehm-Vitense, E.; Dettmann, T.; Kapranidis, S.
A spectrum of Sirius B in the wavelength region 1100-1900 A taken with the IUE satellite shows an absolute flux and spectral energy distribution in the continuum in agreement with theoretical white-dwarf models with T(eff) of 26,000 K plus or minus 1000 K for log g equals 8.65 and R equals 5.08 x 10 to the 8th cm. The Lyman-alpha profile is also i…
Ultraviolet spectroscopy of the extreme B supergiants P Cygni and zeta 1 Scorpii.
Hutchings, J. B.
High-dispersion IUE spectra of P Cyg and Zeta-1 Sco are presented. Both show extreme line blanketing by Fe III and similar ions, formed in a low-velocity stellar wind. P Cygni also shows the same phenomenon in Fe II, at somewhat higher velocity, and appears to be cooler and less reddened then its visible spectrum suggests. Both stars show weak evi…
HD 149499B : the hottest white dwarf ?
Wray, J. D.; Parsons, S. B.; Henize, K. G.
IUE spectra of the white dwarf component of HD 149499, discovered from the Skylab experiments S-019 UV survey, show prominent lines of He II. The star appears to be helium-rich with He/H not less than 1. The ultraviolet fluxes show the temperature to be within the range 70,000-100,000 K, with the most probable value near 85,000 K.
The "semitorrid" gas observed in the direction of gamma 2 Velorum and the Gum nebula.
Bruhweiler, F. C.; Kondo, J.; McCluskey, G. E., Jr.
On the basis of recent IUE observations in the far-ultraviolet, the authors report the detection of a 'semitorrid' region of the interstellar medium in the direction of Gamma-2 Velorum and the Gum nebula. The characteristic temperature of this gas is in the 40,000 K range, between the warm (around 1000 K) and hot (roughly 100,000-1,000,000 K) regi…
