SHINING, A Survey of Far-infrared Lines in Nearby Galaxies. II. Line-deficit Models, AGN Impact, [C II]-SFR Scaling Relations, and Mass-Metallicity Relation in (U)LIRGs
Lutz, D.; Genzel, R.; Maiolino, R. +12 more
The SHINING survey offers a great opportunity to study the properties of the ionized and neutral media of galaxies from prototypical starbursts and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to heavily obscured objects. Based on Herschel/PACS observations of the main far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure lines, in this paper, we analyze the physical mechanisms beh…
An L Band Spectrum of the Coldest Brown Dwarf
Fortney, Jonathan J.; Freedman, Richard S.; Faherty, Jacqueline K. +10 more
The coldest brown dwarf, WISE 0855, is the closest known planetary-mass, free-floating object and has a temperature nearly as cold as the solar system gas giants. Like Jupiter, it is predicted to have an atmosphere rich in methane, water, and ammonia, with clouds of volatile ices. WISE 0855 is faint at near-infrared wavelengths and emits almost al…
Comprehensive Analysis of HD 105, A Young Solar System Analog
Marshall, J. P.; del Burgo, C.; Ertel, S. +5 more
HD 105 is a nearby, pre-main-sequence G0 star hosting a moderately bright debris disk (L dust/L ⋆ ∼ 2.6 × 10-4). The star and its surroundings might therefore be considered an analog of the young solar system. We refine the stellar parameters based on an improved Gaia parallax distance and identify it as a pre-main…
The 12CO2 and 13CO2 Absorption Bands as Tracers of the Thermal History of Interstellar Icy Grain Mantles
Boogert, Adwin; He, Jiao; Emtiaz, SM +1 more
Analyses of infrared signatures of CO2 in water-dominated ices in the ISM can give information on the physical state of CO2 in icy grains and on the thermal history of the ices themselves. In many sources, CO2 was found in the “pure” crystalline form, as signatured by the splitting in the bending mode absorption pr…
High Spectral Resolution SOFIA/EXES Observations of C2H2 toward Orion IRc2
Le Gal, Romane; Herbst, Eric; Acharyya, Kinsuk +8 more
We present high spectral resolution observations from 12.96 to 13.33 microns toward Orion IRc2 using the mid-infrared spectrograph, Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph (EXES), at Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). These observations probe the physical and chemical conditions of the Orion hot core, which is sampled by a bright…
Variability of Disk Emission in Pre-main-sequence and Related Stars. IV. Investigating the Structural Changes in the Inner Disk Region of MWC 480
Bayyari, Ammar; Russell, Ray W.; Sitko, Michael L. +8 more
We present five epochs of near-IR observations of the protoplanetary disk around MWC 480 (HD 31648) obtained with the SpeX spectrograph on NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility between 2007 and 2013, inclusive. Using the measured line fluxes in the Pa β and Br γ lines, we found the mass accretion rates to be (1.26-2.30) × 10-7 M ⊙
Herschel Spectroscopy of the Taffy Galaxies (UGC 12914/12915 = VV 254): Enhanced [C II] Emission in the Collisionally Formed Bridge
Boulanger, F.; Falgarone, E.; Helou, G. +17 more
Using the PACS and SPIRE spectrometers on board Herschel, we obtained observations of the Taffy galaxies (UGC 12914/12915) and bridge. The Taffy system is believed to be the result of a face-on collision between two gas-rich galaxies, in which the stellar disks passed through each other, but the gas was dispersed into a massive H I and molecular b…
Discovery of New Coronal Lines at 2.843 and 2.853 µm
DeLuca, Edward E.; Judge, Philip G.; Samra, Jenna E. +1 more
Two new emission features were observed during the 2017 August 21 total solar eclipse by a novel spectrometer, the Airborne Infrared Spectrometer (AIR-Spec), flown at 14.3 km altitude aboard the NCAR Gulfstream-V aircraft. We derive wavelengths in air of 2.8427 ± 0.00009 µm and 2.8529 ± 0.00008 µm. One of these lines belongs to the 3{{…
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Emission Toward the Galactic Bulge
Blommaert, J. A. D. L.; Peeters, E.; Cami, J. +1 more
We examine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), dust, and atomic/molecular emission toward the Galactic bulge using Spitzer Space Telescope observations of four fields: C32, C35, OGLE, and NGC 6522. These fields are approximately centered on (l, b) = (0.°0, 1.°0), (0.°0, -1.°0), (0.°4, -2.°4), and (1.°0, -3.°8), respectively. Far-infrared photom…
An Infrared Study of the Circumstellar Material Associated with the Carbon Star R Sculptoris
Lau, R. M.; Hankins, M. J.; Herter, T. L. +2 more
The asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Sculptoris (R Scl) is one of the most extensively studied stars on the AGB. R Scl is a carbon star with a massive circumstellar shell (M shell ∼ 7.3 × 10-3 M ⊙) that is thought to have been produced during a thermal pulse event ∼2200 years ago. To study the thermal dust emis…
