An average interstellar extinction curve for the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Fitzpatrick, Edward L.
In a recent paper (Fitzpatrick, 1985) the author examined the properties of ultraviolet interstellar extinction curves in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) utilizing International Ultraviolet Explorer observations of 19 reddened O and B type LMC supergiants. The author has now obtained IUE observations of an additional eight reddened LMC OB supergi…
Chromospherically active stars. II. HD 82558, a young single BY Draconis variable.
Fekel, F. C.; Simon, T.; Bopp, B. W. +4 more
It is presently noted that the HD 82558 chromospherically active star is a young and rapidly rotating K2 V single BY Draconis variable with very strong far-UV emission features and an H-alpha line filled to the continuum level by emission. HD 82558 has constant velocity and is not a member of the Hyades Supercluster. Its light curve behavior, whic…
A multiwavelength investigation of the supernova remnant IC 443.
White, R.; Dickel, J. R.; Chevalier, R. +3 more
Multiwavelength observations of the supernova remnant IC 443 at radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths are presented. This morphological study of IC 443 presents a detailed picture of an adolescent supernova remnant in a multiphase interstellar medium. Radio observations show that better than 80 percent of the continuum emiss…
Radial-velocity curves for the classical Cepheids T Vul, TT Aql and Y Oph.
Evans, N. R.; Lyons, R.
Radial-velocity curves for three classical Cepheids, T Vul, Y Oph, and TT Aql, have been obtained. Mean values of the systemic velocity of Y Oph are in marginally better agreement with a constant value than with the orbit suggested by Abt and Levy. IUE spectra show no sign of a main-sequence companion B8 or earlier.
Time-averaged ultraviolet observations of pulsating DA white dwarfs from the IUE Observatory.
Fontaine, G.; Wesemael, F.; Lamontagne, R.
IUE observations in the range 1200-1900 A have been obtained for four ZZ Ceti stars. The spectra reveal the 1400 and 1600 A absorption features, common to all DA stars in that temperature range, but also previously unreported structure near 1520 A. These observations, together with available archival data for three additional ZZ Ceti stars, are an…
Optical and UV spectroscopy of the peculiar RS CVn system RT Lacertae.
Huenemoerder, D. P.; Barden, S. C.
H-alpha and H-beta spectra of the peculiar double-lined RS CVn binary RT Lacertae have been obtained using the IUE, together with a ground-based coude-feed telescope at KPNO. The ground-based spectra show an asymmetry related to the orbital phase in the H-alpha profile. H-beta profiles showed excess emission in one hemisphere and excess absorption…
High-velocity interstellar gas in the line of sight to the Wolf-Rayet star HD 50896
Fesen, R. A.; Nichols-Bohlin, J.
A large, high-velocity interstellar shell has been discovered in the direction of the Wolf-Rayet star HD 50896. Two distinct high-velocity interstellar components at approximately -80 and -125 km s-1 were detected in the low-ionization resonance lines of IUE spectra for HD 50896 and 11 neighboring field stars, precluding the possibility…
A search for rotational modulation of the ultraviolet spectra of psi3 Piscium and 31 Comae Berenices.
Simon, T.
IUE observations were made daily over a 7 day interval to search for rotational variability in the ultraviolet emission lines of two rapidly rotating, early G giants, ψ3Psc and 31 Com. No evidence was found to suggest that the chromospheric and transition-region lines of these stars, or their ultraviolet continua near 1725 Å, are modula…
HD 47755, a new eclipsing binary.
Koch, R. H.; Hrivnak, B. J.; Pfeiffer, R. J. +2 more
The IUE spectra of the close binary star HD 47755 have been examined in order to determine its geometry, chemical composition, and light curve. UBV fluxes in the spectra, when dereddened for E(B-V) = 0.09 yield an effective temperature of 16,500 K. The ratio of the mean radii of the stars is found to agree well with an old blueband spectrophotomet…
A high-resolution IUE observation of the line of sight to nova V693 Corona Austrinae 1981.
Sion, E. M.; Williams, R. E.; Truran, J. W. +3 more
The authors have analyzed an IUE echelle image of nova V693 Coronae Austrinae 1981 obtained 12 days after its outburst. Broad (30 - 40 Å full width) emission lines dominate its spectrum and generally confirm the difficult identifications of emission features present in its low-resolution spectrum taken 12 days after outburst. Numerous sharp absorp…
