What Are the Hot R Coronae Borealis Stars?
DOI: 10.1086/340569 Bibcode: 2002AJ....123.3387D

De Marco, Orsola; Clayton, Geoffrey C.; Clark, J. S. +3 more

We investigate the evolutionary status of four stars: V348 Sgr, DY Cen, and MV Sgr in the Galaxy and HV 2671 in the LMC. These stars have in common random deep declines in visual brightness, which are characteristic of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. RCB stars are typically cool hydrogen-deficient supergiants. The four stars studied in this paper …

Active Nuclei and Star-forming Objects at z>2: Metallicities, Winds, and Formation Histories
DOI: 10.1086/340696 Bibcode: 2002AJ....123.3041K

Keel, William C.; Windhorst, Rogier A.; Pascarelle, Sebastian M. +2 more

We present near-infrared observations of the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star-forming objects in the field of the radio galaxy 53W002 at z=2.39. The star-forming objects are of special interest as candidate protogalactic objects. The 1.1-2.2 µm passbands sample the emitted-optical range at this redshift, providing new diagnostics of th…

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer 900-1200 Å Spectroscopy of AM Herculis
DOI: 10.1086/340080 Bibcode: 2002AJ....123.2841H

Hutchings, J. B.; Fullerton, A. W.; Cowley, A. P. +1 more

Spectra of the magnetic white dwarf binary AM Herculis were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer during three consecutive spacecraft orbits. These observations were split into 19 spectra of about 5 minutes' duration (0.025P binary phase) partially covering the binary orbit. We report the phase-related changes in the far-ultravi…

Observations of the Magnetic Cataclysmic Variable VV Puppis with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer
DOI: 10.1086/342547 Bibcode: 2002AJ....124.2238H

Gänsicke, B. T.; Szkody, Paula; Hoard, D. W. +5 more

We present the first far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable VV Puppis, obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite. In addition, we have obtained simultaneous ground-based optical photometric observations of VV Pup during part of the FUV observation. The shapes of the FUV and optical light cu…

An IUE and HST Archival Study of the Hot White Dwarf in the Symbiotic Variable RW Hydrae
DOI: 10.1086/324453 Bibcode: 2002AJ....123..983S

Sion, E. M.; Mikołajewska, J.; Dumm, T. +1 more

We have carried out an ultraviolet spectroscopic study of the hot white dwarf in the eclipsing S-type symbiotic variable RW Hydrae (Porb=370.2 days). Our study used orbital phase-resolved IUE archival low-resolution and high-resolution spectra and Hubble Space Telescope archival spectra, including all available images obtained at inferi…

Star Formation in the radio galaxy NGC 4410A
DOI: 10.1086/339556 Bibcode: 2002AJ....123.1922D

Donahue, Megan; Stocke, John T.; Smith, Beverly J.

The NGC 4410 group of galaxies provides us with a rare opportunity to study a nearby (97 h-175 Mpc) example of a radio galaxy (NGC 4410A) embedded in an extended X-ray source, with evidence for star formation that can be readily spatially distinguished from regions dominated by the active galactic nucleus and shocks. We prese…
